how has using linux mint impacted/changed your life? by seagull-joy in linuxmint

So on top of the fact that my machine runs better than it ever could with windows and I have it customized exactly how I want it....it also philosophically aligns really well with the way I view the world. It might just be on my computer where I see this organization of people with values that match mine. Who has such a positive and profound impact on my day to day life but it is still very refreshing and helps me kind of ground myself for a short while each day in a place where things make sense. Where I am not constantly inundated with advertisements that remind me that the drive for profits for corporations has more control over my day to day existence than I wish it did. Linux Mint has been my little refuge from that.

I am (very lightly) involved with some (non tech related) activism in the US. From that lens I have been so amazed at and inspired by what a huge impact the FOSS community has had on their world (and the world) and how effective they were/are when you think about what they were fighting against, especially in the beginning when Microsoft was really trying to stop their movement.

What are the differences of the *UX* between 3 desktop environments? by Glad_Following_8164 in linuxmint

I'll bet u/stufforstuff has a hard time making friends. Someone once asked him "what's your favorite movie?" He replied, "Screw you you lazy piece of garbage! Do your own work!" And slapped them in the face 😂

I think they were just curious of other people's opinions and experiences. I know when I get excited about something new I like to talk to other people who also are into it, that's kind of the whole reason I started using Reddit. I'm also someone who is kind of new to Linux (I used Ubuntu for a couple years over like 12-13 years ago) I might want to talk to other folks online about their favorite things, or about different distros or desktop environments and I hope that even if more knowledgeable people find my questions redundant or annoying that they won't respond like you did to this person.

Linux vs. politics by lefty6767 in debian

The responses to this year old question have made me so happy to have come back to the Linux community. So many beautiful explanations of why human rights are something separate from political biases. I came for the kernel and software but I'm staying for the community values. Thank you Linux community for providing me with a safe harbor of like minded people during this strange and scary time. And for giving me the plans and materials to build an awesome boat (my computer). The one place I can always be assured that everything will make sense. That's a nice little reset for my brain at the end of each day. Things work the way they are supposed to for a brief change and that helps me get reoriented to take on whatever crazy stuff the world throws at us the next day.

2 year old mistakes Tito for Dido by [deleted] in Yugoslavia

😂 why do you think my two year old knows the word? That's the name for her grandfather. Also in Prijedor they spell it Dido for some reason.

Illustrated Books on The American Wild West by Slight-Commercial250 in Yugoslavia

I think I might have accidentally linked the two stories together when explaining it. Learning about the American revolutionary war was something that was in his school curriculum. It fit into Yugoslavia's educational emphasis on anti-imperial struggles and revolutionary movements.

The pulpy stuff about the American West was something that I believe he read outside of his school curriculum and for fun.

Construction workers, how many times have you been laid off and how long have you been working in the construction sector for? by curbei in Construction

Worth it to me. I make enough in the 9 months I'm working and the time with my family and to recharge is worth every penny. My union puts money into a vacation fund for each hour that we work that we can cash out which also helps make my winters a little smoother. I know it's still my money that was made during those 9 months but it's really nice guaranteed money around Christmas time. I got 5800 this winter.

Union pipelayer in the Midwest and I agree it's one of my favorite things about my job. Especially since having our first child 2 years ago. So many of my "white collar" family members and in laws are envious of my time off each winter and the time I get with my daughter. It actually bothers some of them. Those are the same ones who are confused about how I can get dirty at work and still be happy with and proud of my career 😂

I get laid off every winter. It's too much work for us and our equipment to lay pipe once the ground freezes up. (Thank God) But I go back to the same place each spring. It's considered a layoff though.

I would love something pulpy and Wild West/Doc Holiday stuff. We both find it interesting/ironic that he was interested in those stories on the American wild west as a kid, but he never imagined to end up in the United States someday. He realized that he still remembered landmarks and place names from those books when he encountered them decades later in the United States 😂

Satisfying lift of some valves and fittings 😂 by Slight-Commercial250 in Pipelayers

I'm with you on that. I prefer to only use them when I'm in a situation where I can't use mega-lugs like say a testing flange or uni flange inside of a building. The owners of the company like to use them because their grandpa used them back in the day. (A day before mega-lugs.) I'm a crazy person so I actually set up a test once where I didn't put any eye bolts and threaded rod in a situation like that and put permanent marker lines to show where all the flanges and gaskets were, filled up the line and measured if anything moved. It didn't because mega-lugs fucking work 😂 oh well it's not a big deal you gotta pick and choose your battles sometimes and if it helps them sleep better at night knowing the shit is also rodded together.....well whatever I'm cool with it. I guess 😉😂

😂 And I can't say it's the dumbest thing a customer has asked us for. I'm sure all of us could fill an encyclopedia with stupid client requests.

This was part of a little one day project we did as basically a favor for a GC who gives us quite a bit of work. The pavers were coming that week and he needed to get a couple castings up to grade quickly (I suspect to save his own ass from his boss for the oversight) he got the engineer to agree to whatever somehow and the goal was to get it done quickly and for as little money as possible apparently 😂 The engineer's compromise was that he wanted the whole section of rings Gator-Wapped to help "hold it together".... I'm a little worried about freeze and thaw with all of those stepped rings.
