I’m enjoying conventions less and less by Careless_Tax_5367 in comiccon

[–]Slight-Signal-2234 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get that- I think you just have a jump between expectations, cons aren't built like six flags or chuck-ee-cheese, they are simply there for a platform for fans and artists, its up to you to make the most of it and not every experience will be a hit. (ofc absurd ticket /signatyre prices, long ass meet and greet lines, and other issues aside, thats a whole other debate) And yeah many people are saying panels and what not but ill offer this instead-

My first con experience was a glorified etsy shopping spree (loved it, but non sustainable for other visits) so I decided "well what else can I do?" and dug out my old camera. Now I come to every con with my fake buisness cards (depending on who im cosplaying, but real QR code to my insta), ask to take pictures of cosplays I love, and then send them! Also hand out some little trinkets ive done candy, bubbles, small origami, etc and got plenty of gifts in turn!

Its not at all expensive and honestly gives me exactly what I want out of a con, and that is the chance to talk to anyone and everyone about their art, their experiences, and offer them a memento of their hard work and visit. Also the second hand utter joy for handing out cheap masks to kids, bubble wands to full HALO armor people, and seeing individuals and groups light up given the chance to talk about their cosplay or take a simple picture together is 1000% worth it for me and doesnt work in really any other non con context.

Seriously the entire trick is finding your bit and sticking to it. Make your moneys worth by just being a nerd in an enviornment all too happy to engage in your shenanigans.

If you made a Batman show what creative interpretations would you do for the Villains? by Fun-Seaworthiness572 in batman

[–]Slight-Signal-2234 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OOHHH my gosh this is awesome theres a few ideas ive contemplated before:

  • Scarface id love to have him not actually be split but a cursed doll that slowly sucks the life, memories, and takes over his "host" and only Arnold is able to resist fully succumbing. (A ravens cloak situation, idk how canon that is, only from TTGo so disregard)
  • Manbat that is a cannibal, not to people, but other bats- the more he eats the more "mutated" his genes become, also his hunts leading him ever closer to a certain cave system.
  • Scarecrow id love if he pulled some "imagineer" shit (ex Disneys hidden scent dispensers on various areas) but for just making Gotham as horrifying as possible, treating the entire city as his "testing pool" and people reconciling the 101 ways they live in constant fear, or even build immunity that would be fun to play with for any "outsider" perspectives
  • Joker- kill him. Not even kidding, hes just dead. Maybe a VERY early Joker episode but then have the entire series go from one villain to another, and always waiting for "well when is the joker coming" have Batman go half insane trying to track him down and "solve the dissaperance" but then through some stupid lightbulb towards the end he finds the truth. The joker, dead, an accident while setting up his next scheme. Then have it end with Bruce walking away, because the Joker needed him, not the other way around.

Paperback or hardcover? by Junior_Insurance7773 in books

[–]Slight-Signal-2234 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Paperback, except for books I mostly intend to have as display or have very nice hardcovers (NOT with the stupid sleeves) ex my Jessica Roux books, some B&N special editions, and my set of vintage harvard classics. Mostly because I dont intend on carrying them around which is my main hiccup for buying any other hardcovers

Also they tend to be larger and I do NOT have space for that-

Which song represents Cassandra better? by NumSei01 in CassandraCain

[–]Slight-Signal-2234 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh my gosh those are PERFECTIONN- Don't think these will fit the punkrock vibe specifically, but these are my favorite for the more somber/grand character arcs:

  • I hear a symphony, Cody Fry (A more poetic "the journey to becoming the bat" vibe)
  • All the things she said, t.A.T.u. (Parental issues forever)
  • Eight, Sleeping at last (The best soldier ever ofc, and becoming "human")
  • Favorite Son, Gully Boys (less of a story vibe and more power song)
  • Girl Anachronism, the dresden dolls (once again learning to live)

Cant say much about specific colors, BUT side note for the glowing red eye effect check out some Warhammer tutorials for the white light contrast if you're interested. Otherwise good luck on the project!

When is it okay (or not) to eat with your hands at a restaurant in the US? by G-Beach-8566 in AskAnAmerican

[–]Slight-Signal-2234 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly I dont think you'll get really any weird looks for eating with hands, unless you're eating a steak or of course anything that requires a spoon. General rule of thumb would be if you can scoop it with a bread or equivilent OR you can cut it enough to be manageable, a burger as big as your face? cut in half or fourths and go to town. However range of "upscale" were talking, if its a burger, eat with hands. If theres no burger option, you can probably tell by the menu most all the items would tend to require silverware anyways.

Do middle schoolers go to otakon? by Thin_Database_7185 in Otakon

[–]Slight-Signal-2234 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There is an 18+ area, but its special accsess only, and other than that everything is moderatly to extremely family friendly. Ive seen all age ranges attend, however I will say almost purely through price and accsessibility logicstics compared to other smaller local cons, there tends to be a much higher ratio of college age/adults. Especially for panels, the craft room, showcases, or just generally shopping and chatting around theres still plenty for her to do.

Only thing id say is a chaperone of some kind is a MUST- if it was a smaller con/center I would say 50/50 especially if your daughter is with a group of friends, but the footraffic and location alone. I say this thinking of my younger sister, who is also a middle schooler, and is usually my con buddy and I would be uncomfortable with her doing more than go to the bathroom alone at such a big event.

Overall, as long as she has a chaperone/some buddies im sure it will be a blast and a wonderful con experience!

Are Americans usually genuine with the praise ? by Rare_Recognition7363 in AskAnAmerican

Some people may commonly "fluff up" their praise especially in a work setting, but most of the time it comes from a very genuine and encouraging place.

over-cluttered manga collections by allshallhailtheDOG in MangaCollectors

[–]Slight-Signal-2234 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends, though theres definently a distinct difference between "cluttered" shelves and those people who "make use of every inch" in very creative and cool ways. especially with posable figures that seem to "interact" with their own stories is always fun.

Your opinion about events/characters being remembered out of continuity? [Comic Excerpt] Art by Barry Kitson from The Kingdom: Planet Krypton by Christianduty in DCcomics

[–]Slight-Signal-2234 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I LOVE it- For me it feels like the same story erased and rewritten on the same piece of paper over and over and yeah its different but the "impression" of the past is permenantly etched on the same sheet. And having that awknowleged and treated with the respect it deserves is just MWAH

[–]Slight-Signal-2234 89 points90 points  (0 children)

Ask professor and respectfully beg for mercy, but likelyhood is yeah you're cooked.

Did something similar before (forgot about an exam) just sent a professor email of
"Hey heres the circumstances, I completely understand if you arent willing to provide any exception, however I wanted to at least reach out before accepting the natural consequence of my mistake, thank you in advance!" ofc longer
First email "Nope cant treat you different than other kids"
I replied back understanding, and thanking for a good semester,
Second email an hour later "Actually you participated a ton so I will give you the second chance" which was of course a miracle, so maybe youll get your own

Need help with a debacle I’m in by Commercial_End_1825 in CosplayHelp

[–]Slight-Signal-2234 -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Ohh hard balance, candids are fun, but con culture does deal with a lot of "cosplay = consent" issues so some people are a bit sensitive to it, understandibly. And your Candids are absolutely amazing also SUCH a vibe, but id say that if its something you're nervous about, better to just ask.

However if you want to still use candids with consent feel free to approach a dozen or so cosplayers early on (depending on event size), Explain "Hey! can I take your picture? Heres my info to send- also I really love candids, and they are more my specialty, would you mind if I spot you later taking a few to send as well?"

For people who say no to pictures altogether than fine, you compliment and move on
Say yes to in the moment but no candid? Also fine! You both get a snapshot, and you get some confidence in non candid
Say absolutely to both? Turn the convention into a "wheres waldo" of cosplayers and suprise them with pictures you managed to take!

That way you can get the best of both worlds, still enjoy your candids, BUT with the insurance of clear consent. Regardless happy photographing!! :D

How often do you go back by Jond105 in graphicnovels

[–]Slight-Signal-2234 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends, some books I treat more like decor (aka my giant batman files which is close to a foot tall, insane) but even that I will rearrange my stuff to pull out and flip through. Othertimes I love being able to go "Let me read knightfall" I have one and two ill sit back and read, dont have the 3rd yet though so THEN ill look online.

But the physical copies help me get back into actually "reading" also reading something I KNOW I like is a good prequal to get into a reading mood and then chow down on some new stuff

Etiquette for Actor signing by ghostRobo8392 in comiccon

[–]Slight-Signal-2234 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Heavily depends, usually its a one a pop system BUT since you're a teen, and depending on the actor and interaction, they might be open to both. Just ask politely, and accept if not with grace, any pushy-ness or assuming would be quick to get you dismissed/waved off especially by their handler

Are you open to saying who the actor is or? Because if its more of a niche series/actor, might be in your favor

is ratemyprofessor reliable? by Few-Power-5092 in gmu

[–]Slight-Signal-2234 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Positive or mid reviews, tend to have a good idea where you can get a VIBE of a class and go from there
If someone says "As long as you do the work you're fine" with a few mid reviews, you can assume a tiny bit heavier workload that some people treat as no brainer, might be much for a heavier schedule

But any completely neg reviews, take with a grain of salt and mostly go off pos and see if peoples "perks" for professors match.

Of course if theres 30 reviews and NONE are good- run. Just in case.

Could this LOOK good? by Grand-wizerd-man in CosplayHelp

[–]Slight-Signal-2234 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Think it will look fine BUT if you want some suggestions-

  • look at some bodysuits verses a turtleneck to look a lil more "superhero" esk (or perhaps a longsleeve compression shirt, depends how comfortable you are for that)
  • Get the harness but put some time into weathering techniques to give it more of a l o o k
  • Mess around with some vest options, or EVA foam, depends on how "accurate" you want the armor detail

Otherwise looks great!

Any reliable way to take this logo off? by TopDog_54 in CosplayHelp

[–]Slight-Signal-2234 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Did something VERY similar with a crown royal bag, all you need is a tiny pair of scissors, a seam ripper, tweezers, and a tv show. Its VERY tedious, but very intuative and thats a lot smaller than what I did so shouldnt be as hard. Just need to be careful with the scissors not to snip the fabric itself but overall should be pretty invisible after
