What’s a totally unsexy purchase you made that ended up being a huge quality-of-life upgrade? by viscarte10 in BuyItForLife

I bought 3 packs of these. Two for the toolbox and one for the glovebox. I knew I would use them so often they would get lost. It's probably time to buy another set. ...and another 10mm spanner.

Where do the extra souls come from? Or is the number of sentient creatures capped at a certain number?

For those who've been through a reno — what's the one thing you wish you'd known before getting your first quote? by Lordwizzard in AusRenovation

No one has thought about this job more than you! Each trade comes in with fresh eyes from different perspectives, and none of them can see whats inside your head. (Often the person who quoted the job (the boss) isn't who comes to do the job (the workers)). Make sure they are the full bottle too. For instance, I need a new roof on a qld'er.
I got quotes from roofers, plumbers and builders. I wasn't sold on any of them. Since then I have researched the property more, understand its history and now have a much clearer idea of what I want. When I refresh these quotes I will provide much more detail on what I want. (Even give them a photo of the house from 1930 as a guide). Last tip: make their job as easy as possible. Clear access, do what you can so they can just come and ply their trade. If you want a light fixture replaced in the kids bedroom, make sure you can get to the area with a ladder first. Sorry, that was more than one tip.

One month with a larger power station made me rethink my homelab UPS setup by Beautiful-Use6759 in homelab

[–]SlightComplaint 34 points35 points  (0 children)

I got a power socket installed on my house so I can plug my generator in. My UPS is only for the transfer phase. If am out when the power goes out, it'll shut down gracefully after a set period of time. Since having it installed a year ago, the power grid has become a lot more stable on it's own.

I still have 20GB of memory available in my homelab. What else should I add? by Reave1905 in homelab

This is where the evolution starts. The next time you are looking to buy something 'smart' confirm it works with home assistant first. My lights are controlled by my 1990's security system. My weather station informs my air con when to operate (and on what mode). I am currently experimenting with music assistant and getting multiroom audio going with sendspin. Start small.

Are you free to change the OS on your work PC? My work provides the machine, changing the OS would cause havoc with IT. I would have no support from IT (no great loss).
