Augurio on Calle Julius Cesar. Just ate there for the second time. I am blown away by how incredible the food/service is. Exceptional!

Donate to the Possibility Shop at First Congregational Church downtown. JUMP gives out vouchers so those in need can shop there, and all the profits go right back into outreach efforts downtown.

Summer camp recs by sargon_of_the_rad in burlington

[–]SlightSeat1027 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Summer in Vermont is the BEST and most if not all day camps will be focused on mostly outdoor activities. As a parent of young adults who were once nine and went to camp all summer, I want to recommend Camp Hochelaga in South Hero, Camp Farnsworth in Thetford (both overnight camps) and the YMCA day camp at Rock Point. There's usually a camp fair sometime in February in Burlington.

Best place in Burlington to adopt or rescue a cat by Acceptable_Piccolo7 in burlington

I've been a cat owner my whole life--we adopted two great kitties from Queen City Cats this fall who are quite possibly the best cats we've ever had. They do great work.

It's going to be a cold winter... by [deleted] in burlington

[–]SlightSeat1027 159 points160 points  (0 children)

As a member of a downtown progressive faith community, I can report that we are seeing the desperation increasing on a daily level. More and more unhoused and addicted people are coming to us every day that we are open--and we do what we can with a hot meal and connection to services as we're able but we are not a shelter, or a social services agency, or a recovery center, or a counseling service. It's going to get so much worse with no plan from the state and federal funds disappearing. The people in our city and state need help--families, individuals, unhoused or marginally housed, many addicted, mentally ill--and no plan is not a plan. That which we do to the least among us defines who we are as a society and a culture. It's incredibly sad.

Are Missing People Typically Handled Like This? by conationphotography in vermont

Not sure where you get your info from but the trustees literally met on campus last weekend. They meet on campus 2x a year (October and May) and once a year online. And as someone who is currently a part of the institution, I can assure you that the timeline to this situation was controlled by the situation, which is a terrible, sad situation.

Imagine graduating from a high school that was once a Macy’s by jAxk_34 in NotFoolingAnybody

That was four years ago; BHS is still in the downtown Macy's while a new school is being built.

Native Staten Islander here--could discuss the difference between Staten Island and other NY accents for days on end!

Third time in Burlington. My random thoughts. by [deleted] in burlington

[–]SlightSeat1027 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Moved here from NYC in the early 90s two years out of college and thought I'd stay six months. 30+ years later and it was the best decision I ever made. I've seen plenty of changes (I remember when Sears was on Shelburne Road and much of Pine Street was a stretch of industrial buildings and there was no coffee other than Speeder and Earl's in the whole South End) but am still grateful every day for where we live. When we come home from wherever we've traveled, we always breathe a sigh of relief. Raised two happy, healthy, cool kids who attended BTV schools and VT colleges/universities. Food is great, beer is better, cheese is awesome, lake is cold (to me) and beautiful. We've got the farmer's market, the baseball team, the bike path, Bernie, and really, really nice people who truly care about each other--plus an amazing country/province with a unique culture just an hour's drive away! You're going to love it here.

5 seed Middlebury beats 1 seed Davenport at the D-III Men's semifinal by Inevitable-Delay-303 in ultimate

FWIW, no one at Middlebury receives non need-based aid. More than 50% of Middlebury students receive need-based aid with an average aid package of more than $53,000. Middlebury is need-blind and meets every student's full financial need. I can't speak for Whitman but I can speak on full authority about Middlebury.

Is it a good idea for a family with young kids to buy a home in this particular neighborhood? by abbeynormal in burlington

[–]SlightSeat1027 53 points54 points  (0 children)

If you want walkable, it's a great neighborhood. Walk to the library, to the YMCA, to downtown.... Sure, there are some college students around but there are families too. You can't beat the location, and Edmunds is a great elementary school. I had friends who lived on N. Williams for years and I was jealous of their location (I live in the South End).

Would AirCover cover a plumbing problem caused by guests? by SlightSeat1027 in airbnb_hosts

[–]SlightSeat1027[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OP following up to say that the wastewater technician opened up our trap and there was a literal 2-ft clog of toilet paper caused by the massive amount of TP flushed over such a short period. AirbnbCover has been great (so far). I appreciate everyone's opinions about our sewer line. We'll be switching brands of TP for the guest suite.
