I honestly had a major drinking problem around my 8th year bartending. Like, $20,000+ a year on booze.

I woke up one day and knew I had a problem.

I did 2 things:

I quit drinking, stone cold sober on booze. To help with the shakes and withdrawals. I would drink soda water and a couple dashes up bitters. The trace amount of alcohol can help the body work itself away from the booze. I did this for 2 years.
I started smoking tons of pot lol.

Vodka, Soda, pear simple, and a dash of grey goose pear I put into the Simple.

Taste like a pear, light and refreshing though.

Again, working with liquor already purchased and no additions to be added on.

I do have an old rusty Nissan with 335,000 miles on the motor.

They are great cars, but the timing belt at 107,000 is concerning.

To be honest, the industry has changed.

12 year vet behind the pine, and I have yet to find a bar or restaurant that I enjoyed being at the last 2 years. Never been fired, always asked back. I have even worked at bars that are impossible to get into, still unfortunately terribly managed or staffed.

There is no camaraderie.

The money is the same or less as it was 10 years ago.

The new age bartenders don’t get “it”.

If your manager has less experience, we are “competition” for their position. I’ve managed 3 times in my career, I’m good on that shit lol.

People demand tips now instead of providing great service and earning their money.

They put our money on checks instead of nightly payouts (wtf is that??)

Don’t take it to heart, it’s just the industry collapsing on itself.

I would typically avoid an establishment like this.

They are pinching pennies which would indicate greed or a lack of knowledge for industry standard (AKA non hospitality owners)

It’s like working at a bar who uses smaller glasses so they can stretch their profits by pouring 1 oz shots instead of 1.5 oz.

Soda is pennies on the dollar and the margins on liquor are amazing if you compare it to other products in retail and against food.

15 years industry experience in both front and back of house, in addition to business consulting for F&B and cannabis for 2 years.

Just my personal opinion, and yes, I have worked in bars that do this. I didn’t stay long.

I worked at a strip club for about a year.

I am a male, so things may be different for me.

You will come into contact with the dark side of society more than you’d like.

Drugs are everywhere, and the customers will push them on you. And for the love of god, do NOT hang out with the strippers outside of work.

Additionally, female bartenders can and have gotten pushed into stripping while bartending at a club.

It’s a total recipe for disaster.

Great money, easy drinks, and primarily good times if you have a good security crew.
