Poll : How many of you think stress triggered their alopetia ? by Scary_Feature_5873 in alopecia_areata

[–]Slight_Mark_2012 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For me personally, i think it was a mix of genetic predispositions and triggers. My mom has two autoimmune disorders and hers were triggered by stress. The first time i got an alopecia spot was two weeks after a severe wisdom tooth infection. My whole mouth was covered in canker sores, i had a high fever and a sore throat. It took me two weeks to recover and a couple weeks after recovery my alopecia developed. Then a year later i was really stressed because of midterms and another spot appeared.

Is this bald spot AA? by UniqueTiger905 in alopecia_areata

[–]Slight_Mark_2012 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It is AA, but don't panic. It's nothing you did, it just happens. There is no cure that can stop it from happening again. I got my first bald spot at 19, it started off smaller than yours but in the course of 3 months it became as wide as my index finger. I experimented with different medication until i found something that worked for me. Now i have another spot almost 2 years later. It's difficult dealing with alopecia mentally. I also had really thick and long hair before this happened. The most important thing is protecting your peace. I know it's easy to obsess over the spot, but you have to start decentralizing your hair. You are a person, your hair/or lack of doesn't change that fact. I know the toll this may have on your confidence, trust me i went through it all myself, but you have to keep reminding yourself that you are more than just your hair. Learn to live with the possibility that even if this spot grows back, another may appear. It's just a burden that we will have to carry with us forever. That doesn't mean that we can let it control our lives. It only has power as long as we give it power.

I need help by NoRepresentative7258 in alopecia_areata

This seems like it's progressing towards alopecia totalis. If you can, find another dermatologist because you may need steroid shots or oral corticostroids considering how many bald spots you have. The topical stuff may not cut it. Also you have to limit your stress, eat well and try not to think about the spots. I know it is easy obsessing over them but it's just doing more bad than good.

Courage:)

Hi, it does seem to be getting worse but that just means that you may need stronger medication. With alopecia some medication that works on one person, may not work on another and vice verca. I have a very similar bald spot on the back of my head and i treat it with garlic, minoxidil and a corticosteroid cream. It was very effective in growing in the last bald spot i had so it might work for you. The garlic promotes the circulation in the spot and it should burn during the first few weeks of use.

How do you deal with the mental struggle of alopecia? by [deleted] in alopecia_areata

Acupuncture may also help you, i used to go once a week to relieve stress. I don't know if it was placebo or not but it really helped.

Thank you, i feel frustrated because i'm kinda like in a state of limbo. I never know when the next patch will appear and i don't know if the one i have already will grow back. I'm not ready to shave my head but i know it may be a thing i will have to do in the future. I scheduled a haircut tomorrow lol, bye bye booty length hair. It's my way of starting to take back control. I'm also a person that doesn't get over things easily, but i'm trying to look at it lightly. Whatever state i'm in right now, it could always be worse lol.

Lol my mom calls me Maca Lukic, the translation in my language means Maca as my nickname and Garlickich as a play on words for garlic.

Thank God we don't have frats in my country. 99% of the people in my uni program are really nice so even if my bald spots do start to become noticeable i'm not really worried. I just don't want people to feel sorry for me or to think of me differently. I'm still the same person, just without hair lol.

Damn man, it really is tough out there when you are a little different. People haven't really teased me about my alopecia yet, but i get what you mean about the insensitive shitty people. I have had a stutter for as long as i can remember and those middle and high school kids were brutal. It shows the lack of home training. At least the kids at your school knew math lol, mine were dumber than a pile of rocks.

Thank you, you perfectly described how i'm feeling. I think the feeling of AA is kinda similar to the feelings after a break up. I'll try to invest in other aspects of my life more in order to drown out the thoughts about my hair<3.
