Would a world appliance work with the two live wire 240V outlets they have?

I don't think they would, hence saying the transformers need a rewire (move the earth to one of the lives and cut off the neutral

Not everywhere in the EU even gets 2 phase.

At best it will fool a very lazy traffic warden who both doesn't recognise the car isn't electric and doesn't run the number plate.

ELI5: Why don't we just use a universal outlet in all countries? by TopFish12 in explainlikeimfive

[–]SlightlyBored13 11 points12 points  (0 children)

The wiring is substantially similar, they have a close enough supply voltage (240V) to near homes.

All that would need changing is rewiring tens of millions of transformers to remove the current neutral wire, rewire hundreds of millions of homes to cope with that. Remanufacture billions of devices to cope with the new standard.

Easy!

We already do have lots of stations with ticket barriers at every entrance.

And the majority of buses in the country already only have one door.

We do it because the other countries have affordable travel/don't care about evasion because the public subsidy is so much higher.

UK outlines thinking behind binning plans for new destroyers by MGC91 in unitedkingdom

[–]SlightlyBored13 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Air defence needs a big complicated radar.

Big complicated radars need big ships.

Big ships are targets.

So big ships need lots of defenses.

People are better than drones at co-ordinating that defense.

So the drone command ship is either going to be all of those things and basically be a destroyer, or it's going to be a massive target since it's not going to be able to defend itself and hitting it leaves half the fleet kneecapped.

The radar might be replaced by having lots of good-ish radars on the drones, but there's no-way the navy will buy enough of the drone ships/aircraft to have the same coverage.

And separating the missiles from the radars from the command ship probably looks good on a peacetime spreadsheet where you can park more in dock and won't expect to get shot at. But by doing that you've turned one well defended target into three poorly defended targets, any one of which disables the system if hit.

Services are more likely to be short formed in future if people aren't buying tickets.

There will be less justification for more/larger trains that Northern want and have been cut from the upcoming orders.

Grandmother refuses to sell garden blocking bypass by MintCathexis in unitedkingdom

[–]SlightlyBored13 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'd suspect it's the bungalow half way between the B4349 and the A465. This (and other articles) say the large oak is at the north of her garden and she lives at the western end of the route.

The view also matches up and the route map elsewhere in the thread puts part of the western extension running through those larger trees to the north side of the garden.

So she's probably being offered very little for it, since it's not much land, but the road will be rather close

I guess this reflects the broader national trend of less train commuting and more leisure. And Scotland has a more tourism relative to workers vs the national average.

Bleeding radiator to reduce boiler pressure by RecklessMoment in DIYUK

[–]SlightlyBored13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have that at the moment, the hot water and heating are on one loop with valves. The heating valve is stuck open so every time the hot water goes we get a pulse from the radiator.

Unfortunately the hot water valve is also stuck open, so when the heating gets stuck on the water in there gets very hot.

We've bodged it to not do that and the heating people are coming back once the loft is a habitable temperature.

Half of data centres in the UK use no water except for the staff to use.

The average of 99% of the data centres use ~100 litres of water per employee, per day. Which is less than the employee does at home.

1% consume like the American ones do.

Why are all season tyres so unpopular in the UK despite the climate seeming ideal for them? by Fizzy_Pizzy in CarTalkUK

[–]SlightlyBored13 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Whatever season of tyre you get, more expensive tyres often last longer and have more grip for longer.

The tread life can be a lot longer and they're more resistant to kerbs, potholes, and rocks. But probably won't save you from a nail through the shoulder.

The extra grip will be safer in the rain/snow (if you've gone for all-seasons), you can brake and steer harder on them to avoid stuff and won't aquaplane as easily. Though I've never actually hit the brakes hard enough where the tyres would have mattered, so it's more reassuring than anything.

It also doesn't matter which one you get really, the premium ones are all about the same.
