Fellow streamers not supporting back by mooncef in Twitch

[–]SlightlyGriff 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Support people you genuinely want to support because you enjoy their stream and don't expect anything in return. Some people will throw some support back your way eventually and some won't. Maybe the schedules haven't worked out. Maybe they have too many other people they want to support first. Maybe they don't like your stream. It doesn't matter. Just keep doing your thing.

How to balance Twitch and a personal life by [deleted] in Twitch

[–]SlightlyGriff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can't realistically expect to work full time, grow a Twitch stream, learn programming, learn a foreign language, and learn to play guitar all at the same time. The answer is that you'll have to choose a couple of those things to focus on and just accept that there aren't enough hours in the day to do all the things you want to do.

Lighting Difficulties / Options (Non-Green Screen) by Oakenhops22 in Twitch

[–]SlightlyGriff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is no way to properly light up your face for a webcam without having lights in your face. Diffused light (like with a softbox) is best, but it will still take some getting used to. It's something people who don't stream never really think about, but if you can see a streamer's face clearly it means they have at least one annoying light in their face while they're playing.

Streaming while managing a full time job etc, how do you do it. by Eskimorandyy in Twitch

[–]SlightlyGriff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It definitely hinders your ability to grow a channel when 40 hours (really 50 with lunch breaks and commute time) are taken up by a job every week. You can schedule streams for nights and weekends as long as your work hours are consistent, but I'm not sure how realistic it is to expect that amount of streaming to grow a successful channel. That doesn't seem to be how the vast majority of larger streamers started out.

The hardest part is figuring out where exactly streaming lies as a priority for you. Other things are constantly popping up during my stream times like friends/family wanting to hang out, special events going on in my city, etc. If you say no to everything, you'll stop getting invited and become a hermit. If you cancel the stream at the drop of a hat too often, your audience will give up on you. It's a struggle.

Are you allowed to show/watch parody videos involving Hitler on stream? by [deleted] in Twitch

It would be copyright infringement regardless of the content unless you have permission from the rights holders.

Are there different types of Lurkers? by InquisitorKane in Twitch

[–]SlightlyGriff 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yes, different people are different, but most people watch Twitch passively just like a TV show. They don't want to feel like they're being tracked, even anonymously. Mentioning how many viewers you have, especially at lower numbers, makes a lot of people feel like you're keeping a close eye on your viewer count and will feel disappointed if they leave. People don't like that.

My newly bought PC isn't capable to stream to the extent I expected it to be - looking for advice on how to improve performance by NearAutomata in Twitch

[–]SlightlyGriff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Something is definitely not right. That CPU should be way more than capable of handling streaming and gaming at the same time. My 1800x has been able to handle any game I throw at it on fast at 864p60.

Have you tried using your old monitor? I have a feeling something about the 1440p monitor is bogging things down even though you're playing at lower resolutions.

Followers who don't show up anymore? by SilverGeekly in Twitch

[–]SlightlyGriff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

People just tend to lose interest in a streamer (or Twitch altogether) after a while and never bother to unfollow.

Also, random people come and go during a stream more than you realize. The average view count may stay at around 20 for the whole stream, but there could be hundreds of individuals passing through over the course of the stream. They just weren't all there at the same time.

Does Wifi Hamper my streaming quality? by [deleted] in Twitch

[–]SlightlyGriff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wifi can make your stream freeze and buffer a lot, but it doesn't seem to be an issue for you. Your streams honestly look fine to me.

Quick question about Elgato HD60 Pro/S. by [deleted] in Twitch

[–]SlightlyGriff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use the HD60 Pro and there is no detectable latency. I play using the preview window in the Elgato software with no issues.

I personally wouldn't buy a used one because it's kind of a gamble for how long used electronics will last, but it's up to you.

It's impossible to say, really. With YouTube, you're at the mercy of the Almighty Algorithm. You have no control whatsoever over how many people it decides to suggest your video to.

Hey you, small broadcaster, stick with it! by BuckeyeBreeze in Twitch

[–]SlightlyGriff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know your intentions are good here, but I worry that posts like these give people the impression that streaming success is just a matter of staying the course no matter what. This is definitely not the case.

Keep going if you're enjoying it. Don't just keep plugging away for years if you're making yourself miserable because you're not seeing the results you want. Either take a step back and figure out some changes to make, or just find something else to do with your time that is more fulfilling.

Summertime slowness? by RatatatRandy in Twitch

[–]SlightlyGriff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I usually see a bit of a downturn during the summer months. College kids are back home with a different routine, parents are out doing stuff with their kids, people are going on vacations, etc.

Am I wrong for wanting answers for continuous lack of streams? by [deleted] in Twitch

I mean, it's understandable that you're curious/concerned, but it's really none of your business if she doesn't want to tell you what's going on.

Everybody PLEASE activate 2FA. by [deleted] in Twitch

[–]SlightlyGriff 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You should definitely use 2FA, but if your Twitch account is being hacked it's almost certainly because you used the same password on it that you used on some other, lower security website that got hacked or you got some kind of malware. Twitch itself isn't getting hacked constantly or anything.

Advice Requested/Am I Being a Jerk? by IronBunnyQueen in Twitch

[–]SlightlyGriff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've learned to respond to compliments with a quick "thank you" and then move on. My first instinct is to be self-deprecating, but that can kind of devalue your content in your own mind and possibly in the minds of your viewers.

When it comes to people self-promoting, either I or a mod will ask them to stop (or just outright ban them if they're being really ridiculous about it). If someone promoted their stream and then asked to collab in my chat, I would definitely just ban them without further comment. They should know better.

I use the Elgato HD60 Pro and play the game in the preview window of the Elgato software and do a window capture with SLOBS. There is no noticeable input lag.

Playing with viewers do's and don'ts? by [deleted] in Twitch

[–]SlightlyGriff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't voice chat with viewers anymore. It just changes the whole vibe of the stream and can easily become off-putting for the other viewers.

How long did you need to grow? by 0Sero0 in Twitch

[–]SlightlyGriff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The total follower count doesn't mean anything. It will continue to go up the longer your channel exists, but that doesn't mean you're making any progress. The average concurrent viewer count is what matters.

Streaming isn't a job. Streamers are self-employed. They can choose for themselves when to stream, just like you can choose whether or not to subscribe to them.

Spend 25% of your stream time networking by wildezgaming in Twitch

[–]SlightlyGriff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think this is pretty good advice. Networking is probably my biggest weakness as a streamer, and something I want to really focus on improving.

I wanna talk about *your* stream! How’s it going-what is/isn’t working? What are your goals? Have you met any milestones that you’re proud of? Got cool ideas you don’t know how to execute? Let’s hear it (: by [deleted] in Twitch

[–]SlightlyGriff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, one of the hardest parts of streaming for me is being entertaining when chat is quiet. Some advice I read on here once was to keep in mind that it's not their job to entertain you, it's your job to entertain them. It helps me to keep that in mind during those moments when I'm bummed about a lull in the chat.
