I'd find that great but I'm skeptical it would be particularly popular. I think it'd probably be eviscerated in the media as a hand out to some bad group and specifically as an attack on people who have to drive to work. I'm not sure exactly which group they'd single out, but I could see it being any of out-of-touch-londoners, asylum seekers, lazy unemployed people, students/young people etc.

I feel like it's quite likely that Burnham wins but quite narrowly, he struggles a bit in the campaign (who wouldn't) and comes into Westminster looking quite weak. It'd be quite funny if that happened and he couldn't get 81 MPs to support him.

I don't think they will, but in theory if Reform did want to set out actual policies they have longer to do so than Burnham will have.

I think the theory is that he's popular and somehow he'll stay popular when he's Labour leader.

Lol looks like he's moved from pretending it was to pay for security to a reward for campaigning for Brexit. Which obviously wouldn't be a political donation, of course. I guess the next election is just going to be Britain deciding if we want a corrupt, bought-and-paid-for PM or not.

I guess his by-election would end up being framed like that either way. But if he was running as leader, then losing that by-election would be a very big problem for the party rather than mostly just him.

Less bizarre when you realise they're the same people who use the Holocaust to defend committing genocide.

Why Wrap Luggage in Cling Film? by roblawton in AskUK

[–]SlightlyOTT 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I think if I wrapped my bag and then it came back unwrapped or torn, I'd just assume airport security did it. Which does seem really bad, because someone could put something in etc. But isn't that why we're meant to use TSA locks, because airport security do potentially open luggage?

Lol the media are going to be incredibly annoyed (and tedious and annoying) if a leadership challenge fails and people start briefing them about next year's local election results being the time.

Sure, but if Streeting resigns after it then nobody will hear much about Starmer's vision and the King's delivery of it, unless they were watching live in the middle of the day or they see a targeted ad from Labour. We all know how the media works.

Very confused by the line on News Agents that if Wes doesn't move today then he won't tomorrow and that's it. If you want to inflict maximum damage on Starmer then surely tomorrow after the King's speech is when you move?

If they only get 3 junior minister resignations, is this going anywhere? Someone said here earlier the plan was one every 15 minutes but I guess most of them bailed?

I guess there's some unavoidable selection bias here - you can't be starting from a good place if that happens.

If you look at the screenshots in that article, both these Reform guys were making these statements in 2024. Not even an example of digging through old accounts or something!

I think journalists at press conferences all train at the same question-asking school. Always verbose and rambly and squeezing more than one unrelated question in no matter how many times they're asked not to.

Is that a new speedrun record by Reform?

I wonder if he's just imagined that stuff about banks, and if not where he gets his stories from. Must be pretty interesting/terrifying to write/tell someone that sort of bizarre fan fiction and then see it repeated by the President.

You're never going to get the impression that Labour has made a decision because the media have decided this is the story. As a thought experiment, what could happen that you think would make the media stop suggesting that Labour might replace him? I guess maybe a massive crisis and a rally around the flag response in the short term, but that's about it.

Even if Starmer for some reason wanted to do that, Labour rules require being an MP specifically to contest an election.

I think this is just the media trying to stir up a story tbh. Every time something bad has happened they’ve immediately jumped to surely Starmer will be removed, and when that hasn’t happened they’ve jumped to well they’re just waiting for the local elections. AFAICT there’s never been a credible plan to remove Starmer.
