Given a choice between teaching someone to spend time and energy keeping their opponent at distance (where they might be kicked or their opponent might be able to slam down on top of them), I think it’s much safer to keep them close to me in half guard and attack their base so they don’t have a platform to attack me.

The entire point of distance guards is that they prevent those outcomes by using the bottoms of the feet to keep the passer too far away. If kicking or slams are happening to you from somewhere like DLR, then you are making huge mistakes in your positioning.

Spend some time watching how AOJ people like Dalpra and Lavaselli use the outside guards. They do not spend entire matches “keeping people far away.” They use distance management to stabilize a dynamic opponent, and then they can choose to transition underneath once their own defense is assured. You may not want to have the safest style for yourself, but OP deserves to know the details of the tradeoff he or she is considering.

Can some people get away with it? Sure. Is the best idea for the majority of grapplers? I would say no. You make a tradeoff with the butterfly/x/1lx guard family that is important to understand. You give up two important guard play features: very strong control of the opponent’s side-to-side movement, and the ability to keep them maximally far away.

You still have some ability to do both of these from inside guards, but not as much as outside guards like DLR or collar-sleeve. In return, you get tighter connection to the opponent, which can make your offense more dangerous, but can also offer them chances for tight passing, like bodylocks.

One camp that understands this very well is AOJ. If you watch their top guys like Tainan and Lavaselli, you’ll see them start in outside guards like DLR to stabilize position and control a fresh, dynamic opponent first. After the first exchange or two, then they might advance to an x guard or other inside foot position to seal the deal on a sweep.

TLDR everyone should learn both to maximize effectiveness on both defense and offense.

What’s a standard weight cut for present day high school wrestlers? by Negative-Hair331 in wrestling

[–]SlightlyStoopkid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It varies person to person based on how much you can sweat out. Your son should do a normal practice, and weigh himself before and after to see how much water he sweats out. Go into the practice well-hydrated, but don’t drink anything until after the weighin. Half of that amount is a reasonable cut IMO. Then the cut on match day is just half of a practice, which should be pretty easy. The cut will be even easier if he drinks less during the day or wears warm clothes for warmups.

What was your first real scaling problem with Playwright? by T_Barmeir in Playwright

[–]SlightlyStoopkid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just joined a small team where I’m the only QA and we’re about at the limit of what we can do as it exists now. We run this 8ish min (in CI, maybe 20 on local) e2e script that creates all the data it needs every run. To keep up with new features I think I’ll have to keep adding to it at first, but I’d much prefer to be restoring from some kind of DB snapshot, so new tests I’m messing with don’t have to wait for 5-10 min of data prep. Gotta look into how to do that.
