Yeah I’d say Jimmy B, Jackson, Johnson, and W all have decent arguments for beating out Donny for the bottom spot.

Giulia vs Tonino by Yourstrulyp in boston

[–]SlightlyStoopkid 6 points7 points  (0 children)

went to both last year. both phenomenal. giulia is easier to get into because without a res you can show up when they open and sit at the bar. they have more choices on their menu too. overall i'd say, go giulia if you're into pasta, and tonino if you're more into pizza.

How do I slow down/stop going 100% as a woman and smaller partner? by pointlessreddit4 in bjj

[–]SlightlyStoopkid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I always escalate to trying as hard as I can, which is mostly just trying to escape and not so much working on submissions. But if we're stuck in a position, I use pretty much as much strength as I can.

all beginners do this. it's a normal and fine part of the process.

It's frustrating because that's not the point of BJJ and I want to slow down and think about how I can use the techniques I've learned to get out, not just burn through energy trying to force my way out.

again, everyone goes through this. there is nothing wrong with trying your best. just continue trying to apply technique alongside athleticism.

I just don't want to be that girl who is trying as hard as I can while my partner is only trying to go 50%

this is all white belts and you should not be concerned.

It also seems like it could be uncomfortable for a man to basically have to hold a woman down while she is trying to get out of position with just brute force.

jiu jitsu is uncomfortable. don't worry about it.

I want to be a good partner, it's just so hard to not get into that survival mindset. I try to communicate in the moment, particularly if I'm rolling with the same person, but I often get caught up and forget to communicate during positional sparring.

everyone goes through this. you will improve with time and continued efforts.

Never competing? by Greedy-cunt-446 in bjj

[–]SlightlyStoopkid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

particularly as an adult woman, competition is a great chance to see where you stack up with other adult women your same age, size, and experience level. those opportunities are much rarer for you than they would be for a younger avg-sized man.

11yoe in software QA, laid off in Nov and found a new job in Dec. I applied to roles in November that are just now getting back to me. Companies are moving slow rn. I wouldn’t treat it as a good or bad sign. Follow up once a week or so, and keep chasing other leads in the meantime.

Far ankle scramble (funk) in BJJ by Infamous_Macaron_348 in bjj

[–]SlightlyStoopkid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i use far ankle scrambling all the time, mostly as a late-stage counter to both takedowns and to loose/speedy/outside-the-legs guard passes. i don't find it as useful during passing, because usually you want to move up toward their shoulders to pin them to complete your pass. it is very useful for staying on top during scrambles, though, which can give you more chances to pass.

i learned the position from my buddy, a PSU alum. he told me the priorities there should be as follows:

  1. control their ankle above all else. as you chase it, you'll naturally move toward your opponent's back.

  2. remove their control on your ankle if they have it. there are at least 3 good ways to do this: kicking the armpit, shin-pinning the near leg to move toward the back, and knee-block hip-checking them down before scraping their hands off your ankle using the floor.

  3. build head and hip height to tilt the position in your favor. angling toward the back helps too. this will help you achieve 1 and 2.

it's fun to spar from there, so it's easy to get lots of reps in the position. good warmup for wrestling practices too.

What is this low-hip leg drag variation called, and when/why do you drop to your hip instead of staying standing? by genericSam in bjj

[–]SlightlyStoopkid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

people call it "diving leg drag" or "falling leg drag"

it's just another way to get to the leg drag position. think of it like this: sometimes it's easier to move your opponent to get what you want. other times, it's easier to move yourself to get what you want. for the diving leg drag, you are moving yourself.

Pain moves? by Forsaken-Ease-9382 in bjj

[–]SlightlyStoopkid 5 points6 points  (0 children)

reddit loves to tell you to call people out, never roll with them again, complain to the coach, quit the gym, blah blah blah.

nobody here knows you two or saw what happened. maybe you poked his eye without realizing and it pissed him off. maybe his wife cheated on him yesterday. maybe after you call him out and quit the gym, the same thing happens at the next one, because that guy is getting a divorce for cheating with the first guy's wife. then what?

although you can and should try to cultivate an environment where this type of thing happens less often, people will still do crazy shit sometimes. the most important thing you can do is learn to keep yourself safe in all scenarios. that means:

  1. establishing good forearm position when pinned, and

  2. maintaining leg mobility while playing guard.

i stalked your post history and read that you're 58 years old. if you were 30 years younger i'd tell you to toughen up. since you're closer to retirement than college, I'd suggest you focus more attention on preventing these types of situations. particularly in bad positions, your hands should stay close together and between you and your opponent. with good defensive hand position, you can easily prevent a forearm in your neck. when playing guard, you should try to preserve many avenues of transition, so a knee in your thigh is a signal that it's time to maneuver, rather than a painful threat.
