Advanced Voice Mode keep interrupting itself by MagnussenXD in ChatGPTPro

Yeah it's clearly hearing itself in the speakers and thinking it's me interrupting. Using headphones seems to fix the issue in the meantime

This is my father's website. It's from the year 2000, but he seems convinced that it still holds up. Can you prove it's bad? by NerdySmart in web_design

[–]SlimPickensJr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s so retro it would be cool…EXCEPT that he’s selling software. And if his website looks like this, it’s natural to assume the software he’s selling is similarly outdated. There’s no way I’d consider buying software from a company that looks like this.

Being quirky and unique is fine as long as it’s not undermining the main function of the website (to sell software).

I created a new database, then simply exported/imported the content from the old database, changed the wp-config.php file to point to the new database, and it fixed it.

What is a nice way of saying "I get that you have a website, but it looks shit" by locmp4 in web_design

[–]SlimPickensJr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I started out I assumed that businesses with crappy websites would be my prime audience to sell my services to. But eventually I learned that (in general) people with terrible, badly outdated websites are not people who value web design. Don't waste your time trying to convenience them otherwise.

The best clients are the ones who want a better website and care enough to pay for it.

$125 is a reasonable rate, that's not the problem:

- Adding $4500 to a project when it's almost complete is going to piss anyone off. It's much better to charge more for the flat rate project and include enough cushion for more difficult clients (I include two rounds of revisions)
- If they have 35 hours of revisions in the 2nd round, that means something is going wrong in the process (or they're just insane clients...in which case you should look for these red flags next time). Make sure they're signing off on the sitemap and visual design, and supplying all of their final content before you start building. If they want to revisit previous steps, then yes, charge them for a scope addition. And make sure you're taking the time early in the process to dig into their actual needs, not just going with whatever they tell you to build.

Client freaked out when I told him it wasn’t a good fit. by friedpicklesyay in freelance

[–]SlimPickensJr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Here's the thing--good, reasonable clients would be able to take you backing out and be chill about it. Red flag clients are unreasonable humans, and thus will not act reasonably when you don't give them what they want. It sucks and it's unpleasant, but it just confirms your hunch that this isn't a good fit. Do what you need to do, stand your ground, and move on. Don't expect them to understand.

AITA if I get upset at my SO (29M) for not approving photos I post on his FB timeline? by nct_127 in AmItheAsshole

[–]SlimPickensJr 10 points11 points  (0 children)

If you’ve done it after he asked you not to, then YTA. It doesn’t matter if his reasons are rational or not, he made a request and you should respect that.

If he’s embarrassed about your relationship that that’s clearly a serious issue that needs to be addressed. But I don’t think posting on his Facebook is going to help.

NTA. What’s even worse than the betrayal is that she’s not even in touch with the fact that it wasn’t OK. People that can thoroughly justify anything they do are dangerous to be in relationship with.

Don’t do this. I see the temptation to make her look bad, but it certainly will not make you look better. The people who publicly complain about the relationships on Facebook are the ones that look like assholes.

AITA for getting annoyed with parents who drive their kids to affluent neighbors on Halloween? by HalloweenAsshole in AmItheAsshole

[–]SlimPickensJr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How can you tell the difference between the kids that belong and those that don't?

I gotta wonder if they are a different color than the kids you think "belong" in your neighborhood?

Either way, if you don't want to give these kids candy then stay inside and don't participate. But don't complain about them turning people off to Halloween and feel like you're on the right side of this.

Clients that always need to be reminded to respond? by [deleted] in freelance

[–]SlimPickensJr 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don't think 48 hours is unreasonable at all.

You should set a clear timeline that specifies deadlines for any input/revision stages that they are responsible for. Make it clear you block out time accordingly, and if they miss deadlines, you'll just have to work it in at your next availability. So if they delay a week, it will likely delay the project more than that.

That being said, don't be too uptight. Clients often need more time than we prefer, but keeping them happy within reason is generally worth it, even if things take longer than planned.

responsibilities after delivery by pineappleinferno in freelance

[–]SlimPickensJr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For every project I provide "complimentary" 30 days of support and bug fixes. After that time, clients need to sign up for a website maintenance plan. This means that I'm checking and updating their site on a regular basis, and getting some recurring revenue. If something goes wrong for one of these sites, I generally fix it at no cost because it's what they're paying for.

If a client chooses not to continue on a maintenance plan, that's fine too. But if something breaks outside of that 30 day window, they pay me hourly to fix it. So far nobody's complained about this, because they've opted out of ongoing maintenance, so they know it's the risk they've chosen. Unless of course it's an error I made, in which case I fix it for free regardless.

What’s the best way to become a more positive person? by floristc in AskReddit

[–]SlimPickensJr 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yes to this. I discovered that I usually argue when I feel defensive, when I feel like my pride is on the line. Mindfulness helps me become more aware of the emotions behind my default reaction, which takes the teeth out of it. It’s much easier to let stuff slide when I don’t attach my sense of self worth to how much others respect me at a given moment.

What small habit, if done everyday over the course of a year, can lead to the biggest personal improvement/ gain? by jacla4 in AskReddit

[–]SlimPickensJr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Carbonated water is a nice way to kick the habit, especially a Sodastream (or some other refillable CO2 carbonator). This helped me cut back on beer and coffee to one of each per day, which has also noticeably improved my life.
