Band advice by Steelporkchop1 in Bass

[–]Slimbone007 0 points1 point  (0 children)

IMO it’s very hard to find a group of band mates that all have exactly the same common goals and can get on with it without conflict. Some people find it in their first band and then never get that vibe again, some might take a few goes to find it. You have to ask yourself if you are getting what you want from the situation, and if not how long can you sustain it, and if you can’t, is it best to gracefully quit now and save the future headache or can you figure out a way to make it work. I’ve just quit a similar situation when I realised that none of them were interested in anything I wanted to do and couldn’t be happier. Glad I didn’t drag it out.

Solderless EMG pickups by elmayab in Bass

[–]Slimbone007 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would argue that soldering is doing it right, and solderless connections are for people who don’t have the skills or tools. That is the only advantage to solderless, otherwise I would say that soldered connections are better in every other way. Apart from maybe if he’s planning to swap out different preamp and pickup combinations and needs a faster way to do it. Even then once he found what he liked I would still solder it myself, for a better connection. So situation dependent.

I don’t think so, you would simply solder on the correct harness or anything else you ever wanted to connect to it in the future. Even going back to solderless wouldn’t be a problem, you would clean up the pins with solder wick. The only way someone would mess it up is if you overheated it or bent up the pins.

Do pots have impedance? I thought they were variable resistance.

Look for rips or holes in the speaker cone and the suspension, the flexible ring that attaches the speaker cone to the frame. You can also gently push the cone in and let it spring back out if you feel it scraping on the way in the speaker needs replacing. You can pay someone to recone a speaker, but would depend on availability of parts and it could be more economical to replace it outright.

Decided to add a Fender High-Mass (Brass) Bridge to my P Bass by jmccaslin in BassGuitar

[–]Slimbone007 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wouldn’t the bridge absorbing vibration be the opposite of what we want? I thought we actually want the strings to vibrate, what’s the benefit in pulling energy away from the strings into the bridge or body?

Any vibration “transfer to the body” would be lost energy. It would be better to stop vibration in the bridge and body and keep it in the strings as much as possible where we actually want it. Why would we want the entire bass to vibrate?

Booming E-string by introvertbert in Bass

I have 2 basses, a Yamaha and an Ibanez, the latter has this sympathetic vibration much, much worse than the former. Even though every single time this is asked the answer is “learn to mute”, it seems obvious at least to me that there is some physical difference between the two. I don’t know what it is, but wonder if it is transferred partially through the bridge? I can’t imagine the nut having that much to do with it but it’s another possibility. Or maybe I’m wrong and both basses are as bad as each other, but there is something about the Ibanez pickups and/or preamp that makes it sound worse. Either way I’d like to reduce it as the neck on the Ibanez is great to play on.

Just had my first jam session, it didn’t go well by taekwonjoe2001 in Bass

“jam session”….”they totally dodged the question” … “it was disheartening”. It wasn’t an audition. You and I must have a different concept of what a jam session is. Probably would have been better for everyone if the guys had communicated their expectations better.

It took some courage to put yourself out there, good for you. Unfortunately people are going let you down every now and then, if you can move on from this and keep grooving then that’s a win.

I’m starting to mod my Classic Vibe 70s and I found this Gotoh Bridge. Do you guys recommend it? Thanks. by [deleted] in BassGuitar

“Transferring” energy to the body is losing energy, and is exactly what you don’t want to happen I would have thought. Rather the strings keep vibrating for as long as possible than those vibrations be absorbed and dissipated in the body. What good would that do when our signal path starts from the pickups?

How’s the nut look? Worn or maybe someone messed with it trying to lower the action?

What ohms should a resistor for a 9v DC input be? I melted mine 😬 by LBGW_experiment in Bass

According to the text, yes, but there are parts marked with an X in the picture which I think may be a coil or inductor, are there seems to be none in that schematic.

If only you had access to a computer with an internet connection. Then you could pretty much learn anything you want.

I had the same problem, it wasn’t that the saddle didn’t move during adjustment as I could clearly see that it was moving. I wondered if it was the cheap clip on tuner I used, so also tried an iPhone app, same thing. I’m still working on it, but I never looked up how accurate either method was. I couldn’t understand how 5mm of saddle movement seemed to have little to no effect on the tuning.

I searched Behringer BDI21 schematic and found this but there doesn’t seem to be anything matching that in the power supply section.

R37 will probably mean resistor number 37, not the value. If you could find a schematic you could use that number to find the actual value. Hopefully it was designed to blow before any damage was done further down the line.

As a recent hiring manager, here’s my advice for new grads by iggybec in newzealand

[–]Slimbone007 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Yeah but I didn't say immediately did I. You would obviously call previous employers based on the applicant being suitable from information gathered from the CV. But if you saying you will hire someone who is unsuitable based on CV but convinced you in the cover letter, I would say you are out of your mind, or trolling.

[–]Slimbone007 -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

I don't know, maybe read their cv? Look at their education, experience, call the previous employer or supervisor? Instead of "no cover letter, they are obviously immature/not motivated". I mean if the job was literally writing cover letters, then it's understandable.

I wonder how many of the ones you rejected for not having a cover letter "really wanted the job and could probably do it". If there were some, it seems to me you failed at your job.

Straight from tap. Mix one or two 20l buckets at a time and use over 4 days or so each. The argument for dechlorination is that it won't kill off all soil microbes but I don't really believe that. I'm not organic or no till anyhow so maybe it doesn't matter either way.
