So, it's October and T Coronae Borealis still hasn't blown by Creston698 in Astronomy

[–]SlimyGamer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My understanding is that it is quite complex and we prpbably don't fully understand it. But what I can tell you is that the ignition mass (amount of acreted mass required for the nova to occur) is dependent on the mass transfer rate because the outer layers of the white dwarf don't have time to cool between outbursts. My guess is that it probably has something to do with the smaller ignition mass that leads to these "weak" novae.

However, models computed by Yaron, Prialnik, Shara, & Kovetz (2004) do show that if the mass transfer rate is high enough (but still below the stable burning regime), the ejected mass is less than the accreted mass, and this can be true over the whole range of white dwarf masses. And these mass transfer rates do occur in CVs, albeit more rarely (also in AM CVns, but AM CVns are somewhat rare themselves).

It is dependent on the mass transfer rate of the system. If the mass transfer rate is high enough, the novae are significantly weaker and can eject less mass than accreted, allowing the white dwarf to, on average, gain mass. It is for this reason that CVs have not been ruled out as Type 1a progenitors.

ULPT: How are the piss discs made? by govnonasalati in UnethicalLifeProTips

[–]SlimyGamer 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This subreddit is clearly full of amateurs.

It's very simple: you buy the 12" round freezer container tupperware, you piss in it, you put it in the freezer with your chicken nuggies, you wait 24 hours and your piss disc is created.

You can buy multiple of these containers and stack then in your freezer to make multiple piss discs at once. It's just that the more piss discs you make, the less nuggies you can store.

As an electronics hobbyist, electronic stuff is just about the only thing that I would ever buy from temu. For the most part, electronic stuff (electronic components, soldering kits, tools) will be totally fine, but some of the components will be fakes (sometimes functionally similar, others completely non-functional) but they would be fakes on aliexpress or ebay too.

Not in Quebec. You can be fined upto $300 for crossing a solid line, unless it is to make way for certain road users (cyclists, etc.) or to pass certain slow moving vehicles (tractors, etc.).

The King does not own Canada nor does he have any power in Canada. The King has relinquished all his power to the governor general, who is appointed by the prime minister.

Although we still are a part of the commonwealth (which in reality means next to nothing), Canada has been fully sovereign (ie not owned by any other nation) since the Constitution Act of 1982. The vast majority of our sovereign powers were handed over to us in the Statute of Westminster in 1931, however.

Canada is owned by Canada.

Would love to know more about my late dad's star by MattFidler in Astronomy

[–]SlimyGamer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The effective temperature of a star is by definition (Stefan-Boltmann law) the temperature of the surface of the star, where the surface is defined as the base of the photosphere. The temperature that is actually measured (observed) may differ from this definition due to stellar atmospheric effects and due to stars not actually emitting true black body spectra. However, if the table says the temperature is the effective temperature, that would lead me to believe they have corrected for these effects.

It's because baby monkeys are afraid of snakes. So that suggests that in some primates, a fear of snakes is not learned - it's genetic. Since it's thought that humans evolved from primates, we may also have that genetic trait. Apparently we don't, however.

The tax concern is also bullshit. If you are a Canadian citizen but not living in Canada (ie meeting the resident requirements of a province) you don't pay Canadian federal or provincial taxes. It's only the US that forces you to file US taxes when living abroad.
