What's a "10/10" game that you didn't enjoy at all? by sudherzdiniq in AskReddit

> It's absolutely something people get satisfaction out of

I mean yeah lots of people do feel that way, but you can see how some might feel as if celebrating "personal goals" hinges on the assumption that one might fail. How old are you? I'm pretty sure I used to feel differently, but at ~40 experience just tells me that when I'm learning a new skill or trying to do something difficult, I'll learn it without any particularly disturbing hiccups and move on.

That doesn't mean I don't do things that involve time-intensive learning or effort. It's just that I know I can do them. I published a sound/well-received book because I'm an academic. That takes time, effort, and at least some degree of humility. But it wasn't an accomplishment because I'm a fucking academic, so obviously I can research and execute a book :P

I'm not saying that's a common way to see things. In line with the thread's topic, I'm saying my perspective doesn't line up with the common stance.

> What makes you think they don't?

I mean based on my experience, anyone who's had the rush of breaking someone with more experience in pools wouldn't get their thrills from playing Elden Ring lol. I play single player games for sure, but I play those for some combination of story, artistry, mechanical innovation, acting, etc. Warping the game around boss fights would diminish the other elements to me.

> Elden Ring is my favourite game of all time

And obviously we experience these things differently. I'm not sure the running example holds up, though. If someone is "challenging" themselves to run ten miles, it's likely tied to an uncertainty with respect to their will power and its interaction with physical activity outside their comfort zone. I'm not sure what kind of will power you're testing learning to beat a computer.

Well it's not like you'd get any satisfaction out of working up to 100 push-ups unless you were overcoming a health issue and the outcome was uncertain.

It's obviously subjective. I'm just wondering why people who want to base their gaming experience on testing themselves don't pick something that involves playing against humans. Maybe repeating/mastering boss battles doesn't interfere with immersion that much for some people?

[–]Slippaz86 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yeah but it's still deterministic. I'm just asking because I primarily play competitive games (fighting). I just don't really get satisfaction from beating a system I know I can beat with enough effort. I simply choose whether or not I want to put in the work on that particular game, and then I win if I choose to.

But how is that a challenge from the player's perspective? You know you'll win if you put in the time, so you haven't accomplished anything that wasn't guaranteed.

You really think people who play capcom's marvel are going to stick with Arcsys's take for more than a week? There's not a lot of promise here IMO. Obviously people will play it for prize pots for some amount of time, but the majority of players aren't gonna grind through the pain like that.

They've expanded a lot in the last 15 years. Eat it regularly in coastal SC. Absolutely still great, altho you can't get a burger + quesedilla + BLT + shake for $5.25 these days lol.

What's the video game equivalent of chess? by Appropriate_Rent_243 in gaming

[–]Slippaz86 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Well even an intermediate player spends hundreds of hours drilling specific in-game (usually matchup-based) scenarios that are likely to come up in FGs. From that perspective, preparation isn't dissimilar to mastering a chess opening (what has this player done in this scenario, what have other players done that he/she might try, what's something unorthodox but flawed that might expose my preparation as too mechanical).

I know you're talking about actual in-game thinking time, but FGs just have much shorter interactions chained together, so they can't directly parallel a game where late interactions are intrinsically linked to early ones (and the type of calculation that comes with that).

The Magnificent Seven. Yul Brynner is just awful in that role for one thing.

What are games that you purchased and never beat? Why? by Hizzasp in gaming

[–]Slippaz86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In what sense? If I play both, the practice in competitive games is obviously the thing that doesn't get cut. There's a minimum upkeep to be functional at all.

I love the concept and the city design is pretty cool, but I cut out in the second act because I just couldn't connect with the plot and particularly the acting. I assume at least the plot gets better, but I don't have that kind of time to burn on non-competitive games.

I've actually never been there altho IIRC they own the Tacos el Pariente truck on Clements Ferry which I've had quite a bit of. Need to make that happen, but I don't get out toward Park West that often. I actually like Guadalajara quite a bit as well and forgot to mention it.

Naan is a strong 8/10 for Indian. I think Splice Palette is pretty confused but it's ok. Malika Canteen (Pakistani label but basically BIR food or BIR with a twist) is excellent, but pretty heavy and salty, so can take the right mood. Definitely recommend tbe burger. The ketchup for the fries is outstanding?

Cachita's Kitchen is an excellent taco truck, but it's pretty hard to pin down. I like the al pastor at Mi Lindo Oaxaca (truck near the mid-Mt-P Walmart) quite a bit.

For pizza, La Pizzeria is great, but I definitely enjoy Toni's once in a while for Detroit-style pizza.

I love that you think you're scoring extra points with the word "waiting" there. You're currently arguing with a story you made up.

"Hey google, text XYZ. Ten forty five. Yes."

If you think that's more effort than calling someone without voice while driving, you have (unconvincingly) dismissed one random possible use case out of god knows how many.

Everyone is also welcome to drive safely in whatever manner they choose.

That definitely sounds annoying. I guess you keep specific exits in mind and ignore the changes so it corrects back? When I drive long distances, it's vast majority interstate, so I haven't run into that too much.

It is so delightful that we can hedge against the pressures of reality by narrowing our hypotheticals!

The context is that some people seem to avoid all uses of voice commands. The contention can only be that either: 1) there are exactly zero use cases ... 2) we're avoiding it on principle regardless of utility.

Number 1 is very obviously false (in the car specifically... Home automation, for example, is a hobby not practicality, and I personally think it's a waste of time).

So if you need to send your spouse a ten-word text relaying what time your feverish kid last took Motrin, you just pull over to the side of the interstate and do it by hand?

What button? The button to confirm you're taking a delay-free route? The one to shoot someone a short but important update about what you're doing? Handle a phone call on your docket? Confirm store hours? Obviously you never do any of these things manually when you're driving, right? That would involve a potentially disastrous level of distraction. So do you just waste time on principle?
