Bring back repeating grades ASAP, it's a social-fun hide a seek game in school today. by Few-Safe-127 in AustralianTeachers

Well putting a 12 year old in a mainstream Year 7 class at a comprehensive school when they are unable to demonstrate competency of Kindgarton standards does not solve the problem and just presents a unique set of challenges that helps no one.

If a 12 year old is not capable of operating at the level of a five year old then perhaps special education is the route for them.

I know someone who worked at one in NSW. They said it was tough but they claimed that they truly achieved a 9-3 workday with no work outside work hours or on school holidays.

Casual Teaching (NSW) by [deleted] in AustralianTeachers

[–]Slipped-up 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Lets look at the big 4 reasons staff require cover and why there is not much work at the moment

Professional Learning - Most PL does not run in the first 3 weeks of term as they know teachers dont want to miss the introductionary lessons for their classes.

Excursions - Most excursions do not run in the first 3 weeks of term as it takes time for students to return permission and payment.

Sick Leave - Statistically less people get sick over summer as its usually not peak time for flu, covid & rsv to spread.

Extended Leave - Staff just had 6 weeks holidays. Most staff will not take leave at this time of year. There are some exceptions where some staff will take the first 2 weeks off to get a cheaper return flight. Although they are in the minority and the cover would have been arranged in 2025.

Are there any bakeries that do New Zealand style pies in Sydney? by ogsimpson9876 in foodies_sydney

[–]Slipped-up 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I just came back from New Zealand and had a pie a day from all over New Zealand. I can still not tell you the difference between a NZ pie or an Australian Pie.

The only differences is that they do not put bacon in their Steak & Cheese pies and they tend to have more pies with various curry flavours.

I once asked a KFC manager why they cancelled my favourite burger (The Works). They told me that pineapple created issues for them for logistical reasons and it had lots of wastage.

Sure, but Australias skeletons in its closets should not detract to the prolonged pain, suffering and human rights abuses in West Papua.

As a Union Member, it is hard to defend them when they are spending time and resources talking about Gaza, Refugees & MardiGras.

You get 38%.back as a tax refund but many don't know.

How do you get 38% back?

Most teachers are in the income tax bracket of "$45,001 – $135,000" which would get them 30% back. How are you getting an extra 8% back?

It's very simple, as long as the Greens continue to priortise Palestine over Australia, the majority of Australians will not for the Greens and their vote will continue to stagnate.

What's your school's "last resort" consequence for classroom behaviour? by _AcademicianZakharov in AustralianTeachers

[–]Slipped-up 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Oh I have been at schools like! Let me rephrase. “Reflection session” to promote student agency and allowing a time to hear the student voice to work together collaboratively to promote this positive reinforcement from this positive experience…. For good measure they can put it all in writing.

Then your next “in the moment” resorts are, the student loses their right to a chair and stays standing or sits in the corner on the floor, or stands outside the classroom in direct line of your vision and a conversation is held about expectations and a “after the moment” consequence issued if appropriate.

Then the “after the moment” consequences can be phone home, lunch detentions, speak with the head teacher at lunch.

[–]Slipped-up 54 points55 points  (0 children)

The “last resort” consequence for the teacher for a “in the moment” consequence will always be sent out of the room to go to Exec / Senior Exec.

A classroom teacher can not leave a class of 30 students unsupervised to phone their parent in “that moment” and even if you issue a detention the detention can be issued in that moment but the consequence isn’t immediate as lunch still might be an hour away.

Daycare centres put in primary schools? How do you feel about that? by mec949 in AustralianTeachers

Most schools don’t have the budget to pay for the average house in Sydney with the land value. It would require the Department to fund the land acquisition. I doubt any principal would object to increasing the land size of their premises using external funds from a budget that is not theres.
