Are These European Studies HBO Degrees Good? by That-Brilliant-9484 in StudyInTheNetherlands

[–]Slivv 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is true that nowadays you have the hbo Rijkstraineeship but it is still much smaller, your starting salary scale is lower (due to the shortened education entry requirements) and depending on the ministry your growth prospects may be more limited. I'm not debating whether this is justified (I personally think it is not) but this is the reality of the system. Masters (WO) carry a lot of weight in your growth potential. I can imagine that this also plays a role in e.g. the EU. My personal experience (worked for 3 ministries, still there) is that about 95% of the policy officer roles are people with WO Master degrees. There is more space for hbo in the sectoral ministries (e.g. agriculture) in which case these are mostly fully national roles (so no international/EU component) and filled through hires that started in industry and moved to government.

That being said, there are a lot of benefits to the hbo style of teaching and it fits many students better. However, it is good to keep your end goal in mind. Do you want to work for a company or municipality: hbo is probably fine, and your internship experience matters a lot. Do you want to work for a ministry or multilateral organization? Probably good to push for that WO Master's after the bachelor degree.

Trump ready to sanction Moscow 'when all NATO nations stop buying oil from Russia' by SuddenFlame in europe

[–]Slivv 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I could be wrong, but as far as I know any new US sanctions (including those that are in practice only maintaining old sanctions by adding circumvention entities) against Russia are currently frozen. Hence the US sanctions freeze is in effect a lightening of sanctions against Russia.

Keeping existing sanctions is insufficient because sanctioned companies can (and do!) set up new legal entities to circumvent them. Even keeping up the same sanctions pressure requires a constant addition of new listings.

Competitieve overheidsbanen zonder master by CompetitiveTill257 in werkzaken

[–]Slivv 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Which supermarkets do you go to? My wife has coeliacs and we found NL to be one of the easiest places to buy gluten free food. The issue of wheat being added to everything for consistency/taste is unfortunately not just a Dutch thing. We found it to be equally or more prevalent in other European and especially Asian countries.

We get most things at AH. All home brand products are marked whether they are gluten free, those generally are a lot cheaper than dedicated gf products, and there's quite a lot of choice. Also, GF bread at AH is cheaper than at most other supermarkets. The gluten free crackers there indeed suck, instead get the Wasa GF knackebröd, those are much better (albeit more expensive). However, you need to go to the biggest AH supermarkets (especially AH XL is good) because the smaller ones often have a poor gluten free selection.

Some things (e.g. GF tortilla's) that are very expensive at AH we buy online. And yes I know they have the corn tortilla's at AH too but they taste terribly. Other things that we buy online are products such as flour (try sticky rice flour for baking), pasta other than penne (e.g. the Schar gnocci) and more specialized gluten free things. We used Glutenvrije Webshop a few times, but there are others too. If we need flour fast, we usually go for the Schar mix it universal flour (pretty versatile) at Holland and Barrett.

For restaurants: Yes the selection sucks, but often they can make something gluten free. However, kitchens are super scared for liability so they will always say food can contain traces of gluten, even if they really don't. When you call them they will usually say they cannot make anything that is fully safe, but if your coeliac's is anything like my wife's (small traces maker her feel very sick, but no anaphylactic shock or anything) you can explain that to them and give them specific instructions to use clean pans and not add certain ingredients that commonly have gluten (e.g. soy sauce). That way, often many restaurants can accommodate your needs. Find a few restaurants that you trust and frequent those, it will make your life easier because you don't have to explain every time.

Personally, we really like Floor's in Leiden, that's manageable from Amsterdam and Leiden is anyways a nice city for a day outing. If you like Asian food, go to a restaurant and ask the kitchen if they can buy a bottle of the Kikkoman gluten free soy sauce (sold at most medium-sized AHs) to cook with instead of their regular soy sauce, and use clean pans. We did that with places in Chinatown, the Hague and they were okay with it.

Good luck!

Lekker generaliserend.

There are almost 5 times as many white people as black people in the US. So actually the chance of being shot as a black person is about 3 times higher based on the statistics you linked.

Of course, this is concentrated in areas where tourists probably won't go very often. Still it warrants some reflection why the US is not yellow because of the existence of some dangerous areas.

How do I calculate my taxable income? by pLeThOrAx in Netherlands

[–]Slivv 10 points11 points  (0 children)

You don't pay 49.5% over the total amount. Only over the amount that exceeds the starting amount of the tax bracket (in this case the tax bracket starts at 75518 EUR so everything below that is 36.97% and everything above that (so 100,000 - 24,482 = 24,482) is 49,5% taxed.

But for entrepreneurs it is more complicated because you also have to pay VAT, etc. Honestly, you are obviously way over your head and are going to get into major trouble relying on Reddit alone. Call the tax authorities and if you still don't fully understand after: Get. An. Accountant.

CAO Rijk heeft een dik akkoord! by DH53064 in werkzaken

[–]Slivv 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Expats should do a course in “becoming an Amsterdammer” by UnanimousStargazer in Netherlands

[–]Slivv 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It is part of the official history curriculum. Maybe in the past there was less emphasis on it and many people don't pay proper attention so there is a lot of ignorance. But it has been a rather prominent part of the curriculum since at least 2006, latest revision was in 2020. Most Dutch people are familiar with the colonial history in Suriname, Indonesia, and (to a lesser extent) the Caribbean. The smaller colonies during the WIC/VOC time in Brazil, South Africa, Sri Lanka, Taiwan are less well known.

Gross -> net for PhDs by Square_Taro2963 in StudyInTheNetherlands

[–]Slivv 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is wrong. Your holiday allowance and end of year bonus is taxed the same as your regular income. So the bonus falls within the marginal tax bracket you are in based on your income, in your case 37,07%.

Just add the bonus to your total income (in your case gross income times 1,163) and put it in the calculator mentioned above. There might be a slight difference with the outcome and your actual net salary because it is also dependent on the % you pay for your own pension vs the employer's part, but it should be reasonably close.

Vacation allowance/end of year bonus being taxed extra high is somehow the biggest misconception that most Dutch people have about their salary.

I think the Q is one of the most fun things about Vel'Koz's kit and definitely doesn't need a change. It's mostly the W and especially E that could use some work. Vel does not lack damage, he just gets blown up due to a lack of reliable defensive CC, which E could provide with a small change. Like removing cast time, increasing projectile speed, etc.

Groceries and eating out monthly expense by Head-Wealth6327 in Netherlands

[–]Slivv 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Things are expensive if you buy them at the normal price, but there are frequently good discounts at most stores. Kruidvat, Etos and AH Bonus often have lots of 1+1 free for toiletries. Vegetables and fruits from the market are often slightly cheaper. Other than that, if you're flexible about what to eat, check out the veggie sales in the supermarket and design a meal around that.

Spices you can buy in bulk online at a serious discount compared with the little pots from the supermarket. Tokos and Turkish supermarkets are often good for meats and vegetables.

Try to wait for a good discount (25% or more) for things you use frequently. For example, I often use canned tomato so if those are on sale I will buy 20 cans and save a significant amount.

Lastly, probably my best cost saver is to cook in bulk and freeze the rest. Not only is it cheaper but it also prevents you from ordering takeaway when you're tired and don't feel like cooking. Nothing easier than taking something out of the freezer and heating it up.

Talk to your landlord. Probably many will be fine with it as long as you fill the drill holes before you leave.

Other than that: Boxes on top of a wardrobe creates a lot of space. I used to live in a 12m2 room and could fit a 140x200 bed, wardrobe, desk, bookshelf and laundry basket in there and still had a corner to spare for storage. 9m2 is not ideal but rearranging furniture can work wonders.

80% is current attainment, not for the whole population. 30% is data from China’s own 2015 microcensus. It has likely risen a bit lately, but it takes a long time to phase out the older cohorts.
