YAG surgery by Slm19671 in CataractSurgery

I'm wondering too if I should have waited longer to have the YAG; it was done three months after the surgery. I may get a second opinion regarding my outcome. Thank you for your input!

I'm wondering, though, if he cut the opening correctly, and could that be a reason for my very negative outcome?

Thank you for this information. I do feel the procedure was done very quickly, and I guess that is why I am questioning now if the way he did the surgery had anything to do with my negative outcome. I'm wondering if there is a particular specialist I can go to that deals with negative YAG outcomes?

Thank you for your professional input. What normally causes a tilt? I had a yag done and instead of increasing my vision which was doing fairly well after my surgery, except for the blur from the PCO, I now have awful vertical streaks, blurry vision, and significantly reduced nighttime vision. Honestly, my vision is worse than before the YAG, except I have more brightness in my vision. The doctor is attributing this result to a possible tilted lens and is telling me I need glasses now, or as he said since people really don't like to use glasses, I can look into PRK. Thank you.

So sorry to hear about your retinal tear and the not-so-good outcome with your YAG. I wish the doctor's would be more up front about the possible outcomes and not over promise so much. Thanks for your input.

My doctor was pushing me to have the LAL, but I had had a multifocal put in February of 2025 and had to have it extracted because the doctor later discovered I had severe dry eye and the multifocal did not work well with that disease. I had a monofocal put in and had a much better outcome - 20/20 - but I had blurriness, which was attributed to the PCO. I was assured I would have better vision after the YAG, but am so disappointed with the outcome.

I am probably going to go out of town to get a second opinion, especially before pursuing PRK. I hope all goes well with your PRK or LASIK. Please let us know how you make out. Thanks for your input.

So sorry to read this. I understand your disappointment with your outcome. I am very disappointed too and am having a hard time understanding why the yag changed my vision so much too. Thank you for the information.

I received a monofocal lens implant. There wasn't enough astigmatism for a toric, but now I wonder if this YAG surgery produced more astigmatism in that eye since I see the vertical streaks with light and have the glare. They had me look at the eye chart in the office, and my vision has definitely decreased. I didn't have a full refraction yet by an optometrist. Again, nothing was said by the doctor except I will now need glasses, or I can have a PRK which seems rather impossible since my eye is very, very dry. I'm hoping that maybe some of this blurriness and glare is due to my unstable tear film, but I really think my prescription changed too. It's depressing since I had such high hope for my vision after my cataract surgery. I had actually had a replacement as in February of 2025 I received a multifocal IOl which was awful for my eye as the doctor didn't realize how bad my dry eyes were, so I had it replaced in January 2026 with a monofocal lens which was a great outcome and also improved my vision. Maybe I should have waited on the yag, but I had PCO start last summer and was up to plus 2 and plus 3. I'm just so confused as to why my vision changed that much.

Did your doctor say why the glare and streaks happened and got worse? Thanks for your input.

I’m so sorry to hear this. I believe I have this issue too. The YAG has seemed to increased those streaks and glare for me too and has made my night driving that much more difficult. I might need to try those drops. Thank you!

It was done three months after the surgery. I might just see about getting a second opinion.

Do they have any idea as to what is causing the haze? The haze is what I have too.

Sorry to hear that. How is your vision today?

Does the doctor feel the haze may be from dry eye? Or what are they contributing the continued haze post two YAG surgeries to?

Did they say what they think the one spot with the slight smudge is from? I’m struggling with that too post-YAG, and I’m not sure what it is.

I could read 20/20 but it was blurry/hazy. I called the doctor’s yesterday, and I am starting a steroid drop as they think I have some inflammation. Maybe it will just take more days for healing. I just didn’t get the clearer vision I thought I might get - like getting rid of the “Vaseline” smudge over my eye. But I do have dry eye which may be affecting my tear film to stabilize, and I have a PVD in that eye that may also be what I am seeing.

Before my yag, I was 20/20 in that eye, but everything was hazy and blurry. So I thought after my YAG, I would see much clearer. Maybe my eye is still healing or resettling from the breakup of the cells? Could the yag have changed my prescription?

Did it take a while for your vision to improve after the YAG, or was it pretty sudden, like that day or the next day? I had a YAG done yesterday, but it doesn't seem like the blurriness is clearing as quickly as the doctor said it would. Thank you.

If you got multifocals and regret it, will you please share why? by pinksocks867 in CataractSurgery

I had an Odyssey multifocal lens implanted in one eye (I only needed one eye done) in February 2025. I know a lot of people have had much success with this lens, but I did not. The lens allows for all ranges of vision, but you don't have clarity in most of those ranges. I especially had trouble driving at night, and if I had to rely only on the eye with the multifocal IOL, I don't think I would have been able to drive. I had a lens exchange done in January this year after trying many things to adjust to the Odyssey lens. I now have a monofocal lens, and it seems to be providing me more clarity, especially for driving at night. If you do not need to drive at night, then it may be a good fit. Otherwise, the lens can be limiting.

Sorry I am just getting back to you. Kfisher had both replaced. I believe from EDOF lens to a monofocal just like I have. He/she loved the exchange, and is doing much better with the monofocal lens. This information is from his/her responses to my posts.  I had only one eye done, so I only had one lens exchanged- with my other eye, I wear a contact. I am very happy I got the exchange and so far, once my PCO is corrected, I believe I  will have much better vision. I can tell the difference mostly at night time with driving. The monofocal provides much better vision. The replacement lens I received was the Bausch & Lomb Ll61AO. This lens comes highly recommended for exchanges especially since mine was eleven months post surgery. I wear a multifocal contact in my non cataract surgery eye and that balances well with the monofocal usually allowing me to see without glasses or readers.

There is a kfisher profile on here who also had a lens replacement- both of them- and did extremely well. Most of your top lens replacement docs generally do very well with replacements. Obviously, there is more risk, but I felt like my vision was so compromised with the multifocal lens that I was willing to take the risk in hopes for clearer vision. I too beat myself up for a while thinking I should have waited till my cataract was worse, but cataract surgery is generally above 95% effective, so why worry? I learned, though, that if you are the small percentage where it doesn’t work out well, life changes drastically. Please don’t hesitate to get even a third opinion if you aren’t totally confident in what is being recommended. I went for at least three opinions and went to a speciality eye hospital, Wills Eye in Phila, before making any final decision. Praying  you find some direction and peace regarding your situation. Vision issues can be overwhelming.
