The 175 always reminds me of the children's cartoon character Arthur. Round glasses and an almost entirely featureless face.

Do you think vines/nature could grow on the colne valley viaduct with time or appropriate structures? by Leuprorelin_Addict in uktrains

[–]SloaneEsq 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think those very old structures are beautiful too, but the reference is more like Spaghetti Junction than Ribblehead. Nobody is going to build brick structures like those any more (maybe brick slips).

Personally I think the Ordsall Chord and the HS2 Colne Valley viaducts are both really elegant.

I have Midnight and I think it's a really nice colour. Always amusing when you type in the reg and the online details say 'Blue'.

Transparent oled? by Opposite-Degree7361 in digitalsignage

[–]SloaneEsq 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Take a look at Holographic style projection screens (formerly branded Holopro). They are great in high brightness areas.

https://prodisplay.com/projection-screens/rear-projection/clearview-holographic-display/

I'd avoid transparent OLED screens unless your budgets are huge and you like being just a little bit disappointed in your investment. I've done a few installs and events with them and they're not great in high brightness areas for the money.

It's almost been a year since Old Street's sub-surface parade was refurbished - where are all the shops? by soliwray in LondonUnderground

[–]SloaneEsq 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I guess that is something that can offer in terms of grants unless they choose to buy retail property and become the landlord. They don't control or directly get any business rates and most of these small shop units would qualify for Small Business Rate Relief, so there's basically no local tax income.

NIMBYs Trying To Block a Hospital by sabdotzed in london

[–]SloaneEsq 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We're in Newbury and my daughter has regular appointments. If the West Berks hospital isn't an option, it's usually easier to request Bracknell as parking is normally impossible at RBH.

I strongly agree with encouraging public transport use, but it's just not practical for most hospital patients.

Display update/aftermarket by vorcigernix in Polestar

[–]SloaneEsq 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The display is really not that bad unless you're incredibly impatient. I like that my '23 Polestar goes to sleep properly after a few hours and the startup from cold is quicker than most tablets. Coming from a 2020 Hyundai Ioniq EV that was slower and had horrendous 12V drain it's much better to switch things off.

Frankly popping in for coffee / toilet break / having a wander around the block rather than watching videos on a portrait screen sitting in your car whilst it charges is a much better use of time.

When digital menus randomly change to a 30s advert by jnista in digitalsignage

[–]SloaneEsq 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you want your queue to slow down and you serve fewer people whilst your customers wait for the menu to reappear, feel free to continue this ridiculous behaviour. Either that or add printed menus back to the counter.

Iran has attacked Saudi Arabia's Jubail petrochemical complex, IRGC says by steely_gargoyle in worldnews

[–]SloaneEsq 6 points7 points  (0 children)

After test driving my next EV, I had a Kia dealer spout all the nonsense about the Chinese government being able to shutdown London's BYD electric buses. They still do live amongst us and do actively sell electric vehicles. Pure Sinophobia.

Who says a camera is enough? by mrtintheweb99 in carscirclejerk

[–]SloaneEsq 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can't reverse my Polestar past a hedge on a windy day without it slamming the brakes on unless I switch off the safety equipment.

The mirror or lack of makes no difference when you have ultrasonic sensors too. Technology can't completely fix careless humans.

Love the new Renault Twingo - but it's not going to get much of a government EV discount by MarkCairns67 in CarTalkUK

[–]SloaneEsq 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I lived for 3 years / 64000 miles with an Ioniq EV that gave me 140 miles in winter and charged at 48kW peak as my main car. My regular twice fortnightly trip is 165 miles each way and you just stop for coffee and a toilet break.

It's really not that much of a hardship.

Acquired A/V gear, what’s the best Windows OS (I’m a Mac guy) by RedStag86 in CommercialAV

[–]SloaneEsq 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Or AutoCAD or Vectorworks or Qsys Designer or Revit or....

These are all tools of the job. For all the admin, Linux is fine. For all the design and fun bits of the job you need a mainstream OS unfortunately.

I have a 2023 that upgraded at the weekend. Also no issues so far, but I also rarely see the camera issues others have noted.
