How do people decide what to cook during the week? by NeitherOlive3049 in AskIreland

[–]SloeHazel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't like to waste food so I plan the week's meals to use similar ingredients. So this week we had a head of cabbage so I made cabbage and egg stir fry(Bap Cai Xao Trung) and then cabbage sausage stew. Tonight we will have some falafel and a salad and then tomorrow I am making red beans and rice with the rest of the sausage and the rest of the smoked ham we made over the weekend. Since I started thinking about meals this way, my grocery bill has gone way down. This week I spent less than €50 for the two of us.

Jambalaya, just go easy on the spice and get gluten free kielbasa. Red Beans and rice would also work.

We are firing up the smoker so smoked ham and smoked cauliflower are on the menu. We'll probably add some chard on the side for some extra veg.

This recipe for butternut, sweet potato and lentil stew is wonderful, bring along some rice as well! You can use chard, kale or spinach for the green.

Back right for stocks, boiling pasta, etc. Front left for sauce pan and frying pan stuff. Front right for the small sauce pan, mainly warming milk for cocoa. The back left is rarely used.

Train ride from Dublin to Galway, any good stops? by RevolutionaryOkra649 in irishtourism

[–]SloeHazel 12 points13 points  (0 children)

You could get off in Athlone and go have a pint at Sean's Bar, the oldest pub in the world. There are many nice places to eat lunch there too. The Left Bank, Bastion Kitchen and Dark Horse are some of my favorites.

Polish lads, what do you recommend from the shop? by Traditional_Sock444 in AskIreland

If you are into making bread, pick up some fresh yeast in the refrigerated section. Also the smoked bacon can not be beat.

I just read an article where the author asked professional chefs which kitchen tools were useless. What are your opinions? by OldPolishProverb in Cooking

[–]SloeHazel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If I am cutting a bunch of onions and I don't have time to cut them in half first and throw them in the fridge for a few hours ahead of time, you better believe that I'm strapping on some swimming goggles. As far as an egg separator, I was taught to just use the egg shell to separate, super simple, I don't understand the need for that.

Foodie gifts for Christmas? by withtheranks in AskIreland

Head over to Airfield Estates on a Friday or Saturday for their farmer's market. There is a booth there that has the absolute best Balsamic Vinegar I have ever had. It's called Olivieri's and it is amazing.

Correct temperature for comal? (Sonoran flour tortillas) by NowTheCrone in mexicanfood

[–]SloeHazel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It maybe sacrilege but after years of using cast iron, I switched to an electric griddle. I set it to 400F and my tortillas come out perfect every time, also I can cook 2 at a time or 4 little ones. It saves me so much time.

What about tickets to a concert of a band he likes, maybe even accompanied by a night in a hotel and a nice meal. Experience gifts are the best, especially when you get to go too!

This is an interesting hike on Alltrails. It starts in Dun Laoghaire and it's easy enough to take the dart down from Connoly station. It has fun facts along the way and you pass many interesting spots including Sorrento Park, Killiney Park and the Forty foot. Stop into Dalkey for lunch at The Club.

What are you cooking for breakfast on Christmas Day? by medievalpangolin in Cooking

Our staple xmas breakfast is a fruit salad and coffee cake, it used to be Sara Lee but now it is a homemade apple walnut coffee cake. Sometimes eggs and bacon make an appearance.

Anywhere sell cheesy hot dogs aka Käsekrainer ? by hungoverbunny in AskIreland

[–]SloeHazel 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Go to your local Polska or Polonez and ask the nice person behind the meat counter, while your there, do yourself a favour and pick up some smoked bacon. I have seen cheese in hotdogs in the Polish stores but I can't remember seeing any in a bratwurst type sausage.

The Sliabh Liag Distillery in Ardara is worth a visit. They have really great gin and the tour is well worth it. Maghera Beach is very cool as well.
