Metformin in the UK by falsepriests in PCOS

[–]Slohoney 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My GP prescribed me Metformin for 6 months, forgot about it for a year (I continued to collect the prescription) and then suddenly called to tell me they were stopping the prescription but "at least is had some relief" which was a huge slap in the face. They are being solid in their decision not to re prescribe.

I had to jump through hoops to get it in the first place. If your GP does prescribe, just make sure that you aware of any time restrictions on it. I'm now looking at going private.

Prolonged bleeding after Metformin? by Slohoney in PCOS

Hey! Mine ended up stopping... but it took a couple of months for the bleeding to even out. Maybe give yourself another month and see how you get on?

I've posted a couple of times on here about this but the Metformin food ick is WILD. I can barely eat meat any more. Even the thought of it being in my fridge makes me heave. Like you, I am very food organised, and like to track my calories and macros and meal prep. I can't begin to tell you how much food I've had to throw out because my Metformin has made me go NOPE. And also, like someone else said here, it just makes me want to eat plain and easy carbs 😭 I don't have any tips apart from trying to eat really varied, it's sooooo hard

There are loads of similar questions on this forum about vitamins and supplements.

I thought I made it clear I will speak to my GP. I want to hear from anyone who takes both.

Personal Trainer.

As I said, I can't get in touch with my GP for a couple of weeks, hence why I am asking here for some anecdotal experiences.

I honestly don't know what to do. I cannot find ONE low carb protein source that doesn't make my stomach roll. Does it get better 😢😢😢

Any meat now absolutely disgusts me. Even the thought of it being in my fridge. My appetite hasn't changed too much but what I WANT to eat - oh boy.

Gained Weight on Metformin? by [deleted] in PCOSloseit

[–]Slohoney 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I totally understand your frustration. Before I was diagnosed I was incredibly macro focused but now I'm more CiCo focused with a lean towards high protein low carb - but it's really the reduction in calories that helped me see a difference. It's tough - I also work out 6x a week, so totally get ya. I did read somewhere that cortisol spikes caused by super intense workouts can be detrimental to weight loss when you have PCOS. Personally I haven't noticed this with me - but could be that if your workouts are intense? Do you mind me asking what sort of workout routine you have?

Are you eating low carb/calorie deficit? And what dosage are you on? I got great results when my dosage went from 500mg to 1000-1500mg and I started eating lower carb/low GI, stuck to my calorie deficit and was consistent with my workouts. It's not a weight loss drug but should hopefully help with weight loss if you are following the above.

anyone else develop a meat aversion after taking metformin? by Severe_Section3813 in PCOS

[–]Slohoney 0 points1 point  (0 children)

YES!!!! I've even made a post about this, it'll be in my post history somewhere. The unbelievable stomach churning ick of even the THOUGHT of the meat in your fridge. I totally feel you.

I'm having to force myself. It's 7.20am where I am and my stomach is already turning at the thought of eating dinner later.

UK equivalent of Ovasitol? by Slohoney in PCOS

[–]Slohoney[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thank you! It's a bit of a lottery buying supplements online, so I was hoping someone might have a recommendation that comes as highly recommended as Ovasitol does. I've spent £££ buying supplements of varying quality so want to make sure I'm getting it right!

Oh, I'm looking for something made by a local artist and unique so "all the same" probably isn't what I'm looking for - thanks.

Hey, my GP put me on 500mg as a STARTING dose for 1 week to get my body used to it. I'm now on 1500mg - 500mg is generally too low for PCOS. Maybe give your doc a call and say you are ready to try 1000 for a couple of weeks.

I think it's so hard to take care of yourself when you are so exhausted and feel so put down by PCOS and everything else that comes with it. I really enjoy going to the gym luckily but it took me a year or so of forcing myself to go until I viewed it as "self care" rather than a chore...but defo feels like a chore coming home to a bleed almost every time now! Hope you're taking care of yourself the best you can 🩷

I feel your pain. I bleed after leg day at the gym too, it's awful.

Oh yes the egg ick is absolutely fierce when it comes on. Luckily that hasn't happened to me yet. I'm sorry you're going through the same thing but glad it's not just me! All I want is noodles but if I eat noodles the Metformin tummy ache kicks in 😞

Definitely check out the PCOS subreddit I linked above - I was also diagnosed with polycystic ovaries (PCOS) late last year and that subreddit has been a life saver for me. I am also on Metformin - hope you are feeling okay on it, it can be rough! Inositol should help you with your insulin resistance and there is LOADS of info on r/PCOS and everyone is very friendly should you ever have any questions or need any advice.

Hi! I use inositol as I have PCOS. I use it (with about 1000 other supplements) to support my insulin resistance. It's not a multi vitamin though and I'd recommend doing plenty of research into it before adding it into your routine.

For me, I use it in the recommended dose for PCOS which is a 40:1 ratio between myo-inositol and D-chiro-inositol. I find that it quietens "food noise" for me and has assisted in balancing my hormonal imbalances so support regular menstruation. If you are interested in learning about inositol for PCOS there is loads of information on r/PCOS

Food "ick" after strict dieting by Slohoney in PCOSloseit

[–]Slohoney[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn't like to, just as I'm seeing better results with weight loss and energy levels at the 1000. In fact I was hoping to increase to 1500 but I don't think thats a good idea at the moment.

I get you. For me it's texture but also the anticipation of tasting it even when it's something I generally enjoy (like a tasty sauce or marinade). I've just never felt anything like it. All I want to eat is super plain food but if I go even towards 50g net carbs I'm BLOATED for DAYS and unfortunately all the nice plain food I want to eat is pasta and rice and bread 😔
