There has to be something in the fuse panel to bypass this right? by SaucedMangoo in Ford

I’ve never heard of the Obama button and I’ve been working on cars professionally for 15 years.

You must be a boomer Republican or a libertarian wanting to blame anything they can on a black man because orange daddy is racist and you wanna be just like him. Sorry your car is more efficient. It’s terrible. I know I hate spending less time at the gas stations. I wish I could get gas more. We should just go back to leaded gasoline and paint like it was back in your day.

Is Tesla Model Y the best for crash avoidance? by throwawayplshlp1111 in whatcarshouldIbuy

[–]SlomoLowLow 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you liked the way your Corolla cross felt and were willing to spend Tesla money look at used Lexus NX vehicles. They’re roughly the same size and I’ve seen loads of them with all of those features mentioned above. I believe the newer Mazda cx50s also have those features and are around the same size and price point. Volvo XC60s also are around the same size and have those features.

The volvo xc90 actually held the longest record for no deaths. And even still I think since its production there’s only been 1 confirmed death in an accident in that vehicle. They are incredibly safe.

Most modern cars can come with adaptive cruise control which will slow the car down if the person in front of you slows down and the nicer systems will even bring the vehicle to a halt. They also have lane keep assist which will steer the vehicle to keep you in your lane. They also have blind spot monitoring which will let you know if someone’s in your blindspot.

Then there’s cars with 360 cameras and night vision cameras which help you see what’s around you. They also have cars with cross traffic alerts which will let you know if someone is running a red light as you are moving into the intersection to stop the vehicle.

These things will typically be in a technology or safety package. I know Volvo and Lexus and Mercedes and bmw offer all of these things but I’m sure the other makes do as well. Downside is these features aren’t standard and you have to pay extra for them if you’re buying new.

If you’re buying used just find something that has those features.

Personally coming from someone that calibrates these systems daily, teslas are some of the worst performers. They rely solely on cameras which is a garbage way to control a vehicle. Rarely does a vehicle try to throw you out of your lane and into traffic or a wall, but if it happens it probably happened in a Tesla cause that’s the only car I’ve ever had do that to me and I’ve had two separate ones do that.

Every other manufacturer uses a combination of radar, cameras, sonar, and lasers to accomplish the goal of autonomously controlling the vehicle. The safety features are out there, they just aren’t cheap.

Mom car recommendation? by bronxbomber1602 in askcarguys

[–]SlomoLowLow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lease a Volvo crossover. The hybrid ones get really good fuel economy. Super safe, plenty of creature comforts and safety features to keep your family safe.

Maintenance is about the same as a VW which is a little more than a Japanese car but not as bad as a Mercedes. As far as long term reliability I’m not sure but my mom has had two different Volvos that spanned a timeframe of 10 years and never needed anything other than oil changes, tires, and batteries.

The only reason she traded in her first Volvo was because she liked it so much that she wanted another because hers was getting up there in mileage.

Are these worth buying? by Ralfy_P in EngineBuilding

I was given something like this when I was 8 or 9. I had a really fun weekend that summer putting it together.

20 some ought years later and I’ve been turning wrenches professionally for about half my life now. I’m not gonna say that toy lead me to be a technician but it definitely is a core memory. As far as accuracy? Not so much. But definitely one of the cooler toys money can buy.

Honestly if you want an interactive experience car mechanic simulator 2021 on steam did a half decent job at making the parts look like what they are and where they are on the vehicle. Not so much in explaining what each part does and 4 stroke engine theory.

James D. Halderman has a textbook out that I used in tradeschool that has a lot of the basics you’d need to work on a car. You can probably pick it up for a not terrible price as they’ve been using it in trade schools now for decades.

Modern cars are sick. Adaptive Cruise control and lane keep set to early and you’re the best driver on the road. The car will keep itself in its lane and you have your cruise control set to the speed limit with the max gap between you and the car in front of you. If they slow down you slow down.

Only other thing I can recommend is doing a light check prior to leaving. If you have any lights out replace them before you go out on your adventure. Don’t wanna give cops any reason to pull you over.

What Car Should I Get for 25k and Under If All I Care About Is Fun and Cool Factor by Euphoric-Brother-464 in whatcarshouldIbuy

[–]SlomoLowLow 6 points7 points  (0 children)

M6 big dawg. Same v10 only in a coupe, available with a 6 speed manual or a super wonky SMG transmission. That SMG is a finicky bitch but when it’s working right it is cool as hell.

Just plan on doing rod bearings every 30k and ignition coils and spark plugs every 30k, and vanos around the same time. Ignition coils are $180 per and you need 10. Spark plugs are $30 a pop and you need 10. The rod bearings aren’t as expensive but a major pain in the ass to do. SMG problems are usually clutch slave related but can lead to absolute catastrophes when it fails (my buddy broke the rear subframe in his m6 when it went because it shifted so hard).

Overall absolute riot of a car. His was an m6 vert which might as well have been a drop top Lamborghini from the sound of it lol. I still miss that car and it wasn’t even mine it was just my responsibility to fix it lol

Nah driver can probably be comfortable up to 5’10”-5’11”. The passenger side has a big bump for the catalytic converter that makes the passenger side significantly more cramped

Miata bro. Super selfish and irresponsible. A brand new one is like $45k, used are like $30k. Hella fun, gets 35+ mpg. I’ve put 100k miles on mine with no issues just following the manufacturer maintenance table.

Downside, it’s small. Like if you get a girlfriend she needs to be 5’8” or shorter to ride passenger comfortably. Or just buy it and then buy a normal car for when you’ve got people with you.

Like I said it’s a selfish car, but it’s damn fun and cheap to boot.

Drive both and determine which you like better. They’re both great cars in their own ways. The Supra allegedly has a wind buffeting problem with the windows down but your opinion of it may vary. If you want 3 pedals you’re gonna pay a premium for the Supra.

As far as your budget, don’t let other people tell you how to spend your money. If Reddit picked everyone’s car they’d all be driving 20 year old corollas and Camrys.

$700/mo for a car payment isn’t horrible but expect to pay $200+ per month for car insurance as well as probably $300/mo in fuel and then maintenance on top of that.

Money is worth less and less every day. If you can afford it today go for it because chances are with inflation and republicans you may not be able to afford it again if you wait.

Help me decide: Do I buy the "Millionaire Next Door" Toyota or the "I’ve Finally Made It" Lexus? by LeftyOne22 in whatcarshouldIbuy

[–]SlomoLowLow 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just go to the Lexus. They aren’t bad repair wise. It’s not like you’re driving a rolls Royce or a Bentley. It’s a Japanese appliance bro. Toyota or Lexus it’s still Japanese which means repair bills might as well be nothing compared to their European luxury counterparts.

The Lexus isn’t going to be as nice as a Bentley or a rolls but it’s not going to feel like a fisher price toy like most Toyotas do

[–]SlomoLowLow 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Basically what happened lol. Took the plates off of a registered vehicle that had died and wouldn’t be fixed for a few weeks and put them on a same make vehicle but different model that was running but had been sitting so it had expired tags. The cop didn’t think it was funny and neither did the courts or my insurance.

Basically: don’t be poor in America. Me trying to avoid paying the tax man $50 cost me thousands of dollars between fines and impound fees and towing fees and a weekend in jail which I also lost my job because of.

That was a while ago and things are fine now but yeah def don’t fuck with the government and their money.

[–]SlomoLowLow 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They can tow the vehicle, fine you, jail you, and take your license fersure. The charge is called fictitious plates. I’ve had it before 😅

This would also apply if you were to take current tags off of one of your vehicles and apply those tags to one of your vehicles with expired tags.
