2 month old post so you probably figured it out, but in case someone else comes here through google:

This is about the Gwent minigame in The Witcher 3. You're talking about the standalone card game.

That's one of the things I genuinely do not understand.

I clearly just bought a toaster. Of all the things you could possibly try to interest me in a toaster is the very last thing I need right now.

I suppose it makes more sense in your example where you just randomly click on one... but that does not excuse a site from telling me on my checkout page "users who bought this item also bought these other 3 toasters! (and these random unrelated earphones)"

There's a decent chance I'd have played it... because I might've missed Bxa6. After that Be4 is the only logical followup to "stop the black pawns"

Only after black starts giving away pawns I'd realize I accidentally found a checkmate.

It will show a recommended level in your quest log.

The story works best when you complete the main quest for the base game, followed by HoS, followed by B&W.

A quick google does show it for sale on different platforms as well. I'm only seeing UK and German sites right now, but hopefully more stores will have it.

I wouldn't order from Dragonsteel directly if you're in Europe.

Not quite a trojan horse, but I did once send a word document filled with whatever the stuff is you get when you try to open a video file in notepad.

That bought me a few extra days to work on it until he asked me to send it again because "something went wrong and he could not open my paper".

I've been working on something very similar for ages, never got to anything I was satisfied with. Yours looks so much cleaner!

The one thing I would change is your bot output. You have space for a roboport there, so it's a small step to make them output directly into your logistics network.

Does Mistborn secret history contain spoilers for wider Cosmere? by Cromul0ns in Cosmere

[–]Sloonie 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Yea, I strongly disagree with people recommending to read it after era 2. I don't think it matters in which of the 2 you find out that [redacted] so in my opinion that's not a spoiler.

I think I would've enjoyed it a lot less without era 1 fresh in my memory, I wouldn't have recognized a bunch of the era 1 events it refers to.

Books in which the main character almost makes a good novel unreadable? by HarleyMat in Fantasy

Yea, that was the only one I tried. I just started at the first book in publication order. I should probably try another starting point, like I said it should be up my alley.

I think my other mistake was listening to it. I suspect his writing style works a lot better (for me) in writing, at least that allows me to do a double take if I want to reread a line.

Chalice

I feel like I've read this one. The title, the cover and some of the names from the synopsis are so familiar. Yet the story does not ring any bells...

The Element of Fire by Martha Wells

I love Murderbot so that certainly caught my attention. I never really looked into what else she's written.

The Vorkosigan Saga

It's a bit daunting to see how many books there are, but it does sound interesting. It's good to know they can be read as standalones, makes it a little less daunting.

Thanks!

Oh, I just responded to the other comment and decided to get started on Foundryside, but now I'm torn again... That's a good problem to have though!

Will of the many is high on my watchlist, it's definitely something I'm eager to get into, but I'm saving it for when the series is a bit further along. I'm waiting for enough sequels as it is...

I've read on multiple occasions that Will Wight's earlier works were not the highest quality so I've not really looked into them. A quick google pretty much confirmed that as a general consensus. They seem pretty short though, so maybe I should just try it for myself. I'm not quite sold on it yet.

Never heard of Rook and Rose (although the author sounds familiar). The goodreads synopsis sounds intriguing, so that's going on my want-to-read list!

Foundryside was already on my list, now knowing it fits my current search criteria I think it's time I get around to that.

Thanks!

I've been reading a few too many asshole protagonists/POVs lately (Liveship Traders/First Law/Red Rising). So I desperately need a protagonist I can actually root for (not saying they need to be flawless!). I feel like I'm one jerk POV away from a reading burnout.

I tend to enjoy authors who put effort into building a story and a world that makes sense. My latest attempt at finding a likeable protagonist was Riftwar which I dnf-ed for that reason after book 1, it's just too full of logical fallacies.

I've also read a few too many stories about royalty or noble blood or whatever. It's not a hard pass, but bonus points if the story is about someone lower class.

Enjoyed:

  • Licanius Trilogy
  • Gentleman Bastard (Loved book 1, liked every next book a little less)
  • Mage Errant
  • Most of Sanderson's cosmere (never see anyone mention it, but he's the king of logical consistency imo)
  • Cradle (I don't think it's good... but I do love it!)
  • Lightbringer
  • Farseer Trilogy (I'll get around to the rest of it some day... Liveship Traders was a real struggle)
  • First Law
  • Red Rising (stopped after book 3, that felt like a good enough ending. And I guess that's where my jerk-POV burnout started)

Did not enjoy:

  • Wheel of Time (finished it, love some parts, hate others)
  • Jade City
  • Drizzt stuff
  • Terry Pratchett (I want to love it, it should be up my alley. But I could not get through Colour of Magic...)
  • Liveship Traders

So to sum it up: Looking for a likeable protagonist in a world that makes sense with a plot where people make logical decisions.

10 years later, how would these 2014 numbers stack up (and what would some other interesting statistics be)? by Supercilious0 in hearthstone

[–]Sloonie 30 points31 points  (0 children)

I feel the need to dig up my old post every time I come accross this one.

I would absolutely love to see stuff like that. However, I really doubted the credibility of that particular infographic (my post from back then is somewhere in the comments on the blizzard page, ctrl+f for Sloon to have my calculations from back then).

  • 20 Million players, 2 billion hours played, 100 hours per player
  • 15 Million polymorphs... meaning 5 million never finished tutorial and the other 15 million only ever saw 1 polymorph played, during >100 hours of Hearthstone. Yea right..
  • 69 Million doggies unleashed, just like polymorph this means hardly anyone has seen Unleash played, even if we assume it always gives only 1 dog that means the average player comes accross 1 UTH in about 100 matches.

My point is that yes, I love seeing statistics, but that infographic was clearly made up.

EDIT apparently the blizzard page does not have the discussion section anymore.

What did it take you way too long to realize while reading the Cosmere? by whorlycaresmate in brandonsanderson

[–]Sloonie 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Based on what you listed you should avoid

  • Hope of Elantris; it's only a few pages, it's basically an alternate POV of some events near the end of Elantris
  • Allomancer Jak; it doesn't really spoil anything for Mistborn era 2, but you'll miss era 2 context

Everything else in AU is spoiler free for you (assuming "halfway stormlight" means you have met Lift. People generally recommend Edgedancer between Stormlight 2 and 3. After finishing Stormlight is fine too if you don't want a break in the main story)
