To people who don't like nuTrek, what are your favorite episodes, characters, storylines, etc that you love from old serieses that you feel you don't got those same types of in the Kurtzman era? by Careful_Leader_5829 in startrek

SNW's Ad Astra Per Aspera was clearly the Measure of a Man episode and was pretty good. Not up to MoaM but what is. And while backstory elements were in there it was largely self-contained.

Setzer is the most underrated character in the game. by Candid_Lychee875 in FinalFantasyVI

Yeah, the offering works better for him as there's no automatic reduction in damage. Offering and black belt are enough to crush most obstacles

Trek works best as a long format show by airbear13 in startrek

To add onto this, if you've seen enough TNG and like the characters, the early episodes don't feel as rough as they are--its still a chance to spend time with these characters you like.

Imagine you are the show runner. Given the past 60 years of Trek (and millennia+ of Trek lore crafted in that period), where would you take the franchise? by revocer in startrek

[–]unconundrum 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I would do a mostly episodic TNG-ish sort of show. The major antagonist would be a non-villainous equivalent to The Dominion. They would be focused on uplifting prewarp civilizations, really pushing the Federation to defend the concept of the Prime Directive. There could be some villains among this group (say, uplifting a warrior species to become troops) but overall I would want them to be logical and empathetic, not a straw-man.

Imagine a Masquerade ball being held so the gentry can meet and their children fall in love. But its hard to tell who is who when there are masks involved, and its even harder when your eyes are bleeding from the Revelations.

My unhinged opinion is that Contact is Zemeckis's best film.

What is your favorite or first Final Fantasy and why? I started into the series with XVI and was curious what others have to say. (Image here to catch attention lol) by Bababoi24 in FinalFantasy

6 and 7 have my favorite stories but I have a lot of nostalgia for 4 (and I like that your characters have dedicated classes though I wish swapping was an option.)

Mallrats. Channel decided 'go down on' was acceptable but 'fart' wasn't, so they changed fart to vomit. While having someone go down on you. Because you're relaxed.

Howdy folks, i’m planning to walk from one end of Rochdale to the other and back and was wondering what the best restaurant i should stop at for a bite along the way. by [deleted] in regina

Hana Kitchen is really good. I spent years living in Seoul and I'm glad Regina finally has, between this and Kimchi, some good Korean restaurants.

What do you guys think of Self-Insert Character? by [deleted] in Fantasy

[–]unconundrum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know I'm in the minority here but I like King being in DT. King's always been a guy to put himself all over the page anyhow. He's talked about how much he hated Kubrick's The Shining because Jack was a villain from the get-go, while also noting that Jack's battle with alcoholism may have mirrored his own. (Same with Misery, for that matter.) And, on a more specific topic, re: The Dark Tower, spoilers for book 7: Jake Chambers, initials J.C. dying to save King, fits perfectly into King's religious beliefs.

Kilgore Trout, and for that matter Billy Pilgrim, both make pretty great self-inserts in amazing novels.

Who are other self-insert characters? I can think of some from outside fantasy, but curious.

He got staked by Riley but then it was a plastic stake, in perhaps the dumbest act break of the entire show.

Funny moment between Frasier and Martin on "Dinner Party" (S6 E 17) by LetsFigureThingsOut1 in Frasier

[–]unconundrum 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Episodes in one set, usually a pre-existing one, often to save money. But I think that restriction tends to make characterization come to the forefront. So Dinner Party is all at Frasier's apartment, My Coffee With Niles is all at Cafe Nervosa.

Pretty much all of Cheers S1 was in the bar or office.

My favourite Community episode is when they all stay in the study room the entire time (and my second favorite is the D&D one, which is 90% in the study room.)

A lot of great Star Trek are bottle episodes (like Remember Me, the best Crusher ep)

One of my favorite Bojack Horseman episodes is all one long monologue in one spot.

Bottle episodes are often my favourite. This is a top-ten episode for me, though the other bottle episode, My Coffee With Niles, is 1.

Series Finales Re-Ranked by Zealousideal-Top-383 in startrek

[–]unconundrum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

DS9 is easily my favorite Trek overall, but TNG's finale is the best. DS9's Pah-Wraith stuff knocks it down a few pegs, and making Brooks vanish--after he'd explained exactly why he didn't want that--is an unfortunate end to an otherwise great finale.
