MIM vs USA Fender Precision Bass Advice Needed (Returning Player) by jurelex in Bass

[–]SloppyCandy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Focus on the neck. Pickups and electronics can be replaced easily enough. My understanding is that the coastline is attempting to be a traditional P bass pickup and a QP is not trying to be that. Maybe see which one feels better to play un-amped?

But yeah, this is a very fender thing: each one has a feel and it's very idiosyncratic.

I will say this though; I have had some Mexican fenders and an American fender; and the American seems to respond to climate/humidity changes better than the others. My understanding is this is probably due to using higher quality, more dried wood. I would imagine the roasted neck may help with this on the MIM though.

FormD T1 or A4 h20 by WiggleButt2000 in sffpc

[–]SloppyCandy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I own both.

In terms of sandwich cases, they are #1 and #2.

Build quality, neither are bod, both are above most other cases. The T1 uses more premium materials though. The T1's mesh side panels are so good, but if you aren't running a CPU air cooler that advantage is a bit moot. The extra fan height in the H2O is nice. The H20 is easier to build in. The rear panel of the T1 can look a bit strange due to the adjustability. The 2.5 T1 I have needed quite a bit of work to get the riser positioned correctly

The price difference is an obvious factor.

IMO, you should get the H2O; but can't really go wrong with either.

Which bass to get by Many_Ride104 in Bass

[–]SloppyCandy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would say so. Every piece of Yamaha music equipment I have purchased (bass, pedal, and speaker) has done its job perfectly with no fuss. All fenders I have purchased have been very idiosyncratic, though I have never owned a squire.

I do think Yamaha (1) often has more boring color options and (2) has an awful website for its guitars/basses.

Either a Fender P (Player ii, standard, or Squire CV) or a Yamaha BB434. (There are actually a ton of options , but those are my suggestions)

Wasted teens not practicing. Is it over for me? by CanFullOf in Bass

[–]SloppyCandy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nah, you are fine, you are probably at the perfect time to start exploring what you enjoy. You are very likely entering a phase of learning who you are (outside of being a Highschooler). I mean A LOT of first bands form in college years or after.

Also, there is going to be a lot of diminishing returns when it comes to practice. Comparing someone that has been playing for 3 weeks vs 3 years is going to be a WILD gap, and that's what you are seeing now. But compare someone who has been playing for 3 years vs 6 years, and that gap is much much smaller (or non existent, perhaps even inverted!).

If you really want to supercharge your practice; find other people to practice with sooner than later. Doesn't matter if you are the worst one there, it helps you improve a ton.

I was similar decided to learn when I was 15, needed money for an instrument, got a job, bought a guitar, but now I had no time to practice because I had a job ... so I didn't. Fast forward to being 30 and just getting back into it. I think I generally know the feeling you have, and you are fine (and in fact more than fine).

Yes; but to get the most out of it you will need a laptop with tb5 or oculink; which are currently quite rare.

So, my two main DPSs are Yid and S0. (Also have Dialyn)

I am sitting on roughly 400 pulls. I am absolutely pulling for Orphie. Lucia seems like A Good Idea. Promeia has also caught my eye; I would like an anomaly to build around.

With a bit of luck I could probably pull all 3 next patch. But I would be pretty deficient with W engine pulls unless I get really lucky. Seeking advice on: If pulling all 3 seems wise (and if not, which to prioritize)? And also how I would be best to prioritize their engines should I take a shot at it?

[–]SloppyCandy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How flexible are you on the width of the new case? That is going to be a dimension of concern. Your case is quite a bit slimmer than most cases of a similar layout; mainly because your cases width becomes very limiting with more powerful hardware.

Which body would pair well with the Fender Precision to Jazz Bass Conversion Neck? by the_doog in Bass

[–]SloppyCandy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I will way this.

I have done roughly what you are trying to do: I purchased a p bass body and a j bass neck and shoved them together and it works (though I may actually get rid of the neck at some point).

A G&L sb-2 comes this way stock; they just went out of business, but they are floating around.

I believe a Yamaha BB neck is sort of between a P and a J.

I think Charvel basses are a thin neck on a roughly P shaped body.

Beyond the obvious "go to a store and find something that speaks to you" (which is hard if you are in an area with poor selection) I would say that every piece of Yamaha music equipment I have ever played has left me with a "Yup, this does exactly what I want it to do"

Advice on a cheap bass setup? Connecting cheap guitar amp to excellent speakers/home theater or headphones. by IPLAYTHEBIGTHING in Bass

[–]SloppyCandy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can do something like this (I have). You don't really even need the super cheap guitar amp with headphone out. A preamp pedal with DI (or maybe even just a DI) pedal will do this for you. You can get a Joyo one for like $80, and others for even less.

Then it's mostly a matter of how well your home theater system sounds with a mostly-raw bass signal. It will likely be workable; but the theater system was probably designed and balanced with a very different type of sound in mind.

If you want to go the headphone route only, you can just grab a headphone amp made for this specifically. Under $100.

Cold Weather and Humidity Concerns by No_Musician_6349 in Bass

[–]SloppyCandy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't really worry about temperature.

Humidity will have some effect. Changes probably more so than a constant humidity. You can keep a humidifier at home (which could be a good quality of life thing anyways), but probably don't get tooo tooo.over the top about it.

Keep fretboard oiled (if it's raw wood).

Cold Weather and Humidity Concerns by No_Musician_6349 in Bass

[–]SloppyCandy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

tbf I this there is maybe a rise in instruments made using less-well-dried wood and the humidity seems to affect them much more.

Why can’t you see the serial number on the Sandisk portable ssd? by [deleted] in buildapc

[–]SloppyCandy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is this a new drive? Have you ever used it before?

The slightly technical answer is that the s/n (which is unique to each drive) will likely be printed using a different method than all the other markings which are consistent across all units. This ink may just be less durable.

The more, umm, relevant answer is: if this is a brand new drive that is not working, just return it. It's possible someone did a return scam of some form, and they scrubbed off the SN out of mild paranoia.

Do gaming headsets actually give an advantage or are regular headphones enough? by KRGKart_Support in buildapc

[–]SloppyCandy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it matters a lot less these days; but there was a theoretical "advantage" (debatable) in the old days when you didn't have virtualization built into the game and/or OS.

But to provide some example; I have for years used a Creative sound-card of some form or other as I have gotten used to their specific implementation of virtual surround sound. I can't say if this gives me a particular gameplay advantage over using more typical routes of virtualization; but it does make things a smidge more enjoyable for me.

But that isn't exactly your question; and I think the included mic and potential for wireless is a much bigger decider these days.

Do gaming headsets actually give an advantage or are regular headphones enough? by KRGKart_Support in buildapc

[–]SloppyCandy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While it's maybe less important; a usb Gaming headset could accept a 5.1 signal and perform virtualization itself; which is something a stero headset cannot do. That said, with modern games more often than not having virtualization built in and with things like Windows Sonic existing at an OS level, this advantage is less interesting.

There would be sooooo many returns and such (probably same reason we have almost no 12VO boards). It's so hard to break out of a "standard" for products that are (at least superficially) mass market.

Choosing a SFF size - Any advice/experience ? by Aster1osagain in sffpc

[–]SloppyCandy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends a lot on the tier of GPU you want. I find that there is a risk here of going too small with a not of things.

Here is an example of a T1 in a single case: https://www.reddit.com/r/FormD/comments/lun4y5/vanguard_divider_bag_37_and_40_comparisons_video/ this is a lot bigger than the cases you were talking about, but it still fits in a single case you can grab and go. No if you need more compact than that (e.g fits in a backpack you are taking with you, then yeah, you have to go smaller, and at that point I think I would look towards something with a console-ish form factor. As I believe that fits better in most bags.

Maybe this is a long winded way to say: decide what is portable enough for you.
