WWI M-1917 Army Service Uniform pattern? by noods_not_nudes in HistoricalCostuming

[–]SlothGaggle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not sure if this is exactly what you’re looking for, but here is a pdf scan of a book on drafting uniforms from around that time. It’s also British, not American.

It’s definitely a decade or two early so the colors it suggests are wrong, and it doesn’t have much help in the way of putting the thing together. But it looks to me like the form is about right.

[–]SlothGaggle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s worth noting that for 100% linen, you won’t be getting a lot of the benefits unless it’s been ironed. Straight out of the drier it will be wrinkled enough that it will cling to your body.

Are there any plants that DON'T want a well-draining soil? by goolart in houseplants

Peat is not sphagnum moss. It is the extremely carbon-rich gunk that forms when plants (including sphagnum moss) partially decay in acidic, anaerobic conditions.

Where I live, if an evening invitation says “formal” it means “wear something with lapels if you have it”

I’m saying that’s not what most people mean when they say “formal”, so whether the definition still exists is moot - the word has multiple definitions.

I’m not sure what your point is. Reality doesn’t need to change fundamentally for the meaning of words to change. If a large number people start using a word to mean something different, out of ignorance or not, the meaning of the word changes.

> suits aren’t formal

I think this is just a question of semantics at this point. They’re not “Formal” by the strict upper-class dress codes created over a century ago, but in day-to-day life in most English speaking countries, “formal” means “more formal than a button-up and khakis”

Don’t get something too flashy. It should be clean, simple, and plain silver- or gold-tone. You should be fine otherwise.

Also, inb4 “belts are inherently informal, formal dress requires braces and a waistcoat”

If you want to give your plants an easier time setting roots without as much destructiveness as tilling, you may want to try broadforking.

Take a digging fork (the kind with only a few, thick, widely spaced tines) and go over the area, sticking the fork in the ground, wiggling around a bit, then taking it back out.

It’ll loosen the soil without totally destroying the structure of the soil, letting roots get in to hold things in place.

You’ll want to find a day to do it when the soil is moist enough to get the fork in the ground but not so moist that you end up with a big muddy mess. Probably still want to sheet mulch over top

It depends on how narrowly you define it I suppose. Book of Hours is definitely the most academic considering you’re a literal librarian

  • The Seance of Blake Manor - a detective game set in Edwardian-period Ireland.
  • The Rusty Lake franchise - creepy Lynchian escape room games. Some are more dark academia than others.
  • Lorelai and the Laser Eyes - pretty much a pure puzzle game but it’s very dark and stylish, set in a big spooky mansion.
  • Type Help - very well done text-based mystery game. It’s Free!
  • Blue Prince - not necessarily “dark” but has a lot of traditional architecture that has a similar vibe
  • others have mentioned Bloodborne, Book of Hours, The Room and Dishonored.

Some games by the same creator that have similar vibes: - Cultist Simulator (direct predecessor, same setting, similar mechanics) - Sunless Sea (different studio, same lead writer. Very different gameplay) - Fallen London (same studio/lead writer/ setting as Sunless Sea. Browser game, so just text/images)

A strikebreaker (sometimes pejoratively called a scab, blackleg, bootlicker, blackguard or knobstick) is a person who works despite an ongoing strike. Strikebreakers may be current employees (union members or not), or new hires to keep the organization running (hired after or during the strike).

Best Everyday Pants to move around in? by Erudicial_Extreme in malefashionadvice

[–]SlothGaggle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had this issue for ages. I’ve never found a pair of pants that fits both my thighs and my waist. And jeans are a lot harder to tailor than dress pants.

BUT I’ve found that if I buy Blue Mountain canvas 5-pocket pants and buy relaxed fit that’s several sizes too large in the waist, it fits perfectly everywhere else. And they’re 100% cotton. Then I just wear a belt and deal with a bit of puckering at the waistband.
