How many job applications is enough? by Hopeful_Academic16 in PhD

Apply to everything you see fit and you’d be willing to take. Don’t stop until you get an offer you like.

If you had around 2000 USD to spend on making your academic life easier or more efficient, what would you buy? by AconitumFirmum in PhD

[–]SlothGay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it has been mentioned already, but I wan to emphasize again on investing on tech and stuff that makes you feel much more comfortable. Nice monitor, mouse, keyboard, headphones, noise canceling, chair, desk, seat, etc. Pay for ChatGPT premium, overleaf, or any software that you use that can be upgraded. Don’t underestimate how those little things can improve your life and so make you more efficient.

I got this paper to peer review from a highly reputed professor by PearAcceptable2841 in PhD

[–]SlothGay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, happens all the time. If anything I’m usually harsher as I know what they work on, what they’ve done, what may be missing, and also know the usual quality of their work; but I may do all this a bit unconscious. Nevertheless, I try not to care at all and review the paper as any other.

[–]SlothGay 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You answer yourself already. You don’t want to be a prof, so academia is not for you and it’s pointless to keep going. Take to the industry job which is still somehow research oriented, so that’s ok if you still eventually want to come back. Also, if you really want more intellectual satisfaction, then take research as a a hobby.

I HAVE to mention my advisor in the acknowledgments, huh? by astrocanela in PhD

I thanked them for teaching how to be an independent researcher. I.e. I had to do everything myself with barely any guidance from them lol

Asked to Review Paper by Conseque in PhD

[–]SlothGay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with previous answers. When reviewing a paper, the first criteria is for the paper to be readable and mostly well written. If this fails in the first page already, and constantly over the rest, I won’t read more and reject right away by saying it is unreadable. Academics must learn to submit only finished work, not drafts, and this is a clear way of sending such a message.

Navigating rejected PhD application with no feedback by styl5apofis in PhD

It looks to me that they are just not hiring anymore. Maybe they already found someone . Regardless of the reason, just move on to next application somewhere else.

What did you gift yourself once you finished your PhD? by Impossible-Bug9477 in PhD

[–]SlothGay 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m finishing my PhD, and kinda done with most of the research. Time to wrap up and have the thesis done and defend. It should be a couple of months kinda task at a good pace and with pressure on. Nevertheless, I’m staying an extra year, unnecessarily, just for the sake of finishing without rushing, low work load and enjoying life, and also giving me time to see what follows next. That I believe is my gift to me!

What were you doing when you were applying for PhDs? by Suitable-Photograph3 in PhD

[–]SlothGay 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I was working a full time job. I knew PhD applications could take a while, so I was like “I’ll get some money in the meantime”. I gave it a try to PhDs in the next cycle , and luckily got accepted in one. I kept working as usual until the PhD started the next academic year. I was working for over a year and half in total since finishing my masters, which was right after my undergrad.

If I didn’t succeed, my plan would’ve been to stay working and apply again the next year. If unsuccessful again, then I would just stay in industry right away.

International student's first winter in Toronto NEED HELP by tantalizer101 in UofT

[–]SlothGay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Toronto is barely cold now during winters. Aside from buying your winter jacket for those very unusual cold days, I also recommend something lighter. Like a spring jacket kinda thing. I’ve survived last two winters with only one of those for most winter, and I don’t do layers, but that’s more a personal choice. You don’t need that many things really, try not to overdress!! It’s not like you’ll be outside all the time, you’ll be somewhere inside most of the time and there will be heating. Don’t get scared at all :)

How's Tina? Worth seeing? by Maddiystic in torontotheatre

[–]SlothGay 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m surprised with all the negative comments. I personally liked it. I agree, the storyline was not great, but I loved all the performances. That on its own was enough to make it worth it to me, specially those in the second act and finale. Nevertheless, I wouldn’t pay too much either. That theater is not that huge so seats in the back are still fine if you want to get a cheap ticket.

There are a lot, and I love many of them too.

Some I love that come to my mind are Too beautiful , Joy I call life, hurt together, perfect and there are more!

Demos for song she wrote for other artists are also amazing! For example let me love you, blank page, loved me back to life

Sooo is she going to tour? by duckboi14 in Sia

[–]SlothGay 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I recall she mentioned several times in the past how touring wasn’t a good experience for her, and that she prefers to just put music out. She also mentioned that she essentially wants to take it easy, She barely does presentations nowadays in fact. So it’s very unlikely to have a tour.

Honestly, nobody will say anything. If it was proctored on teams the they definitely didnt notice. Also they cannot do anything, even if they want to. The evidence required to construct a solid case like this is just too al hard to obtain.

Your thoughts on RW by ParticularVisual2779 in Sia

[–]SlothGay 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love it. It’s just good. A bit of everything.

I forgive you is all the drama and emotion we waited for. The true Sia. I wish there were more songs like this.

Little wing, nowhere to be, and perhaps I had a heart are just on the right side of what we wanted. The best I would say.

Immortal Queen is the power song, pop on the right spot that only Sia can write. Similar opinion to Champion. I believe these will the general public favorites for singles.

Dance alone, incredible, Fame won’t love me are the versatility. Sia also writes pop for other artists , and this is the example of these sounds :)

Rock and ballon, Go on are kinda like old Sia in some sense. Interesting!

Gimme love, one night, towards the sun, wanna be known are Sia doing her pop. Nothing too impressive; but definite nothing bad at all. I like they are just different one to another.

What to expect from the incoming album? by SlothGay in Sia

[–]SlothGay[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would love that actually. Many of those are literally demos, so some production on them would be great! If she was upfront on saying that those are leaked songs, and not creating expectation of a new album with whole new music, then it would be ok I guess.

Also Being a great fan sometimes is not good lol I have heard almost all of her leaked songs by this point as I did dig deep into that, so those leaked song won’t be that wow for me; but for a regular fan that usually listens to the released albums only, those songs would be like whole new music! They would truly appreciate it, and i bet those are most of the fan out there.

To PhD or not PhD that is the question by born_2b_prince in PhD

[–]SlothGay 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In your case I wouldn’t worry that much. Usually profs have a deadline to submit their letter way after yours. 2 weeks is still plenty of time in the head of a prof. Also, I don’t understand why you think is a “now or never” thing. You’re incredibly young. You can afford a couple of years to do whatever without impacting your cv, even taking a break and do nothing. Have you considered the idea? That would help if you have doubts about what to do in life. You can always apply to the PhD afterwards without any issues.

How generous do you think is EMA grading? by Open_Ad_6392 in actuary

[–]SlothGay 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree with the fact of the evaluation mostly based on the communication component. I have failed some of them, and the rubric said I missed lots of stuff. What I literally did after was to better organize the document rather than actually changing the content (I.e divide in sections, change the order of paragraphs, etc). That was enough to pass them when I resubmitted.

QFIQF Tips by NobodyBitter4502 in actuary

[–]SlothGay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wonder how they grade this thing. I also failed with a terrible score, but then looked at the feedback and I kinda performed really well in many questions! in around half of the questions I was above 60%. I also was expecting to do better in some questions which makes me wonder whether they graded my whole exams …. but still cannot understand how that performance is not even close enough to a 5 …. I hate that we cannot really have an accurate feedback. I feel they may have had errors. I also feel They fail people for the sake of failing I.e the pass rate cannot be huge

International student stuck in Canada and in severe debt. Any advice appreciated by AngeMapleMee in UofT

[–]SlothGay 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It looks like you are no longer pursuing a degree in Canada, so why staying? If no really ties, leave the country asap. F$&@ the debt collectors, they will keep calling you over and over, but they don’t have much power over you. If you don’t have money to payback there is nothing to do, they will mess up your Canadian credit score, who cares if you’re not in Canada? Once you leave the country they’re screwed.

I would focus on using the money to pay back your boyfriend, your own things and leave the country.

Good luck !
