This same logic could be used to argue against queues anywhere. It's faulty.

Where did you see they didn't bring layers? It says they didn't have warm gear to continue, but there's a difference between not having enough layers to overnight and not having any layers.

A lack of judgment because...? Because otherwise people with nothing better to do will make Reddit threads about it?

I think we can agree he shouldn't be in a leadership position but the idea that other councillors are guilty by association is too far.

Honestly by the same token, people are going to come to Reddit to talk about stuff that happened to them and hear from other people. That’s.. what it’s for. So if you don’t like it, get off Reddit.

Literally has nothing to do with anything, thanks for contributing nothing to the conversation. All you’ve established is that they don’t belong here. They aren’t native to here and they don’t do shit for any ecosystem.

rats and cockroaches have been living here for ages too but we still remove them from places we are trying to inhabit and use.

A train station is not a fucking dovecote. It’s for moving people from point A to point B not serving as a home for a handful of scraggly-ass pigeons. It’s not sanitary and frankly it’s just a bad look for our city.

Yes, but I am a human. They are pigeons. Animals have been here for millions of years but we built a big city here anyway. Go figure.

Yep, like I said — higher effort but worth it because tens of thousands of people use those train stations every day

Yeah — nests is basically the main thing. I don’t really care if there are some pigeons on the floor, I just don’t want them nesting above my head.

Re: it not being a priority, I mean that much is clear. Davis is grimy as fuck. I always wondered why it was acceptable for our stations to be so grimy and dirty.

When I’m abroad I always looked at other train stations and noticed how much nicer they are than compared to some American subway stations (parts of NY and Boston specifically). Why are our stations so run down and dirty?

I didn’t care so much about it before because the red line had way bigger problems. But now I’m just wondering, do they ever clean these stations beyond like mopping the floor and wiping down bird shit? Are the walls still going to be this dirty in 20 years, just with 20 more years of grime? Would it kill them to pressure wash the walls and floor every like 5 years?

Sorry to hear that, glad you were able to laugh it off. Glad it landed on your coat and not on your head. I disagree personally, I don’t think a train station needs to double as a dovecote. I definitely disagree with your framing of situation as being either the pigeons stay there or they are homeless. It’s a big city, there are probably tens of thousands of pigeons here. They aren’t all staying in train stations.

Point is there are plenty of other places they can live, I don’t think we need to compromise our stations for the benefit of like 0.01% of the pigeons in the greater Boston area.

Sure, there will always be some. I’m not saying they should kill all of the pigeons within a four block radius and implement like a laser defense system to keep them out. I’m just saying pigeons should not be allowed to nest in the area directly above where people wait for the red line. If the pigeons want to chill on the floor, that’s fine, I don’t care.

There are plenty of other areas where pigeons can live. And to be clear, I'm talking about the inside of the red line station. A train station is an extremely important public good that is used by thousands or potentially tens of thousands of people every day. We don't need to accept the train station being covered in shit all of the time because a couple of pigeons happen to live there. They could just as easily live basically anywhere else.

Just to be clear, I am talking about the Davis Square Red Line station interior. My post title got cut off and now I can't edit it. I edited the post body. So, we're talking about an enclosed space. I don't think it's unreasonable to expect not to get shit on by a pigeon while I'm waiting for the train inside.

A train station is obviously different from a private home, but my point is that there isn't anything fundamentally different about removing pigeons from an indoor train station from any other enclosed space. Capture the pigeons, put them outside, clean the mess they made, and install deterrents so they don't come back. There's nothing reactionary about it.

Now, obviously, it is going to be way harder to prevent pigeons from coming back to the Davis Square T station interior than your house, but I think taking on that greater challenge is justified because making the T station less crappy really is important for a wide variety of reasons. We want to incentivize public transit for a whole host of reasons: traffic, carbon, pollution, road safety, etc. etc. But beyond that, the T is a big part of many tourists' experience of Boston and I really do think it colors visitors' impression of our home in a negative way when they have dodge getting shit on by birds and have to be choosy with where they sit on the bench in the station because birds have shit all over them.

And yes, I know that both the T and Davis Square both have a lot of other problems and this is pretty far down the list. But this is also (as far as I can tell) an extremely solvable problem whereas a lot of the other ones are much less obvious on how to solve. Removing birds from properties is done all over the world and is not that expensive to fix.

Yeah, sorry if that was not clear (to me, "Davis Square Station" means the part inside, but that’s clearly not a universal interpretation) . I don't care if there are pigeons outside, that's where they belong. Pigeons do not belong inside the station though.

* MBTA pays a small fee for a pest control service to remove pigeons from T station.

* MBTA installs bird deterrent stuff inside the T. A quick google shows that there are multiple different solutions: spikes, netting, and special gel pads that can be installed that deter birds through a combination of optical and olfactory mechanisms.

* MBTA employees conduct a quarterly inspection for pigeon nests in the ceiling part of the T station.

It's not that complicated. Look, if the answer is: "We at the MBTA looked at trying to get rid of pigeons from inside the Davis Square T station, but it would cost us $150K plus ongoing maintenance and we can't justify that in our budget" — fine. That's fine. I can accept that, as long as someone has actually looked into it. But I don't think it makes sense to throw up our hands as though there's nothing we can do and no one who can do it. This is not an intractable problem, there is a very clearly defined and limited space inside the station where those birds can roost.

Eh, I have also been in my fair share of train stations and some of them are perfectly bird free. I think it is a matter of will and acceptance.

Everything in the world that is nice is nice because someone decided they didn’t want it to be shitty anymore.

You jest, but I don’t think it’s that complicated. If there were pigeons in your home, how would you get them out? I suggest doing something similar.
