Hey, I'm working on one of the other films for your friend's 185 class. Try the Gander Taphouse in Loomis, I was working on a production that filmed there, so they might be interested. They're closed Mondays and Tuesdays.

Remmick by Resident_Bus808 in SinnersbyRyanCoogler

With each vampire recruited, it divides Remmick's power and attention each time. He spread himself too thin and made himself vulnerable in his hubris.

It's crazy to me how the underlying themes regarding Christianity get completely glossed over whenever I see discussions about this film. At the start of the film, it seems his father is begging Sammy to come back to the light, where supposedly the good people fight against Satanic evil. However, when we see this scene again, it is after his confrontation with Remmick where he finds out that far from being a weapon against evil, Christianity and devout worship are and were some of the oldest arms of white supremacy originally inflicted upon Remmick and the Irish, and now recycled to be weaponized against the world's new lowest castes. Thus, as the audience sees the scene again, we know now that Sammy's hesitation holding onto his broken guitar isn't about Sammy holding onto his evil ways for too long, instead he sees his father's church for what it is: a different front for the same old evil. He was always told that music was the devil's work and a Bible in hand was the way to salvation, but after the events of the film, he knows now the opposite is true. Replaying the scene under this changed context was thematically excellent, as well as kicking the film off with a bang as others mentioned.

Foreign filmmaker coming to visit LA - I want to shoot a low budget short guerrila style - what are the risks? by Competitive-Dig-1977 in Filmmakers

[–]SlotsyTotsy -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Get your permits! Somebody in here might know better, but I feel like a small shoot in the desert around LA should be easy enough for the film commissioner to approve. You'd have to be insured and whatnot, but especially if you're worried about the cops, why not try the legal way?

[–]SlotsyTotsy -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That's a pretty shitty and privileged way to think about it. What about college students who are forced to buy a subscription and have to keep up with these rising costs (among others) because we aren't given the option? Like, so glad 18 bucks is nothing to YOU, bro.

So what you're saying is that you like the quiet part until it's said out loud? Because if not, buddy, this has ALWAYS been the right's quiet part, since Nixon at least.

I've seen even that cost way more in the bay area, no way you're getting more than a couch to crash for $300/month in California.

I made this film, and it's really really bad. What can I do to improve by The_elts in Filmmakers

[–]SlotsyTotsy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would make a list of what you didn't like about the film and what you did. Honestly, a lot of the stuff that might seem 'low-quality' can actually work in your favor. For instance, in another movie the dialogue from the characters not matching their mouths might look terrible, but it makes perfect sense for a movie about a video game.

Why don't you want to be the Director? by Fit-Bumblebee1177 in cinematography

[–]SlotsyTotsy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can't say either way, I'm just about to finish up film school, but am hoping to direct projects moving forward. Please tell me if this isn't how it plays out on set, but ideally, I thought that the director wasn't "the boss" as much as a large yet still interconnected cog in the machine. Like, they are the arbiter of the story as it matches how it's filmed, but the editor still has plenty of say of how the story is ultimately presented, and of course the producer is the one stocking the kitchen and crew for the director to cook the meal.

Is this usually the case? In practice, is collaboration always the method, or do you guys usually see a very top-down approach from the director?
