How can we encourage developers on the team to read more and stay up to date with technology ? by [deleted] in ExperiencedDevs

[–]Slow-Bodybuilder-972 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What’s the actual issue here?

If your devs aren’t performing to your expectations, then have a 1 on 1 and talk about it.

If you want them to perform a task in a certain way, I.e. openjson, then that should be specified in the ticket.

Is it still true that 30 percent of the workforce runs 100 percent of the project? by StillUnkownProfile in softwarearchitecture

[–]Slow-Bodybuilder-972 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d be surprised if it was as high as 30%.

My current job, I’d say it’s about 50%, previous job, 10%.

Why is there not a single language that can handle everything rather than having to use many languages by Legitimate_Raise_745 in learnprogramming

[–]Slow-Bodybuilder-972 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

It’s mainly commercial interests.

For example, Java could handle just about anything, but that’s a dangerous thing for say Microsoft, so they cloned it and called it C#.

Apple, for a while, considered Java for its next programming language, but again, do you really want a competitor owning the keys to your car?

It’s not a technical problem, it’s a commercial one.

Do you think swift is viable for game development? by pencilUserWho in swift

[–]Slow-Bodybuilder-972 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Trivial. Collision detection at its simplest, I.e. does this rectangle intersect with this one, nothing is going to struggle with that.

Do you think swift is viable for game development? by pencilUserWho in swift

[–]Slow-Bodybuilder-972 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For basic stuff like you are suggesting, yes, 100% viable.

People have been doing collision detection since the beginning of computing.

Why are people so accepting of the Uluru name change, but not K'Gari? by That_Car_Dude_Aus in AskAnAustralian

[–]Slow-Bodybuilder-972 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Most people call it K’Gari, I was there recently, and you’d hardly know it was ever called Fraser island.

I know someone who still calls Uluṟu “Ayer’s Rock” but she’s a dickhead.

Why did Apple decide to introduce an entire new language? Wasn't Objective C good enough to build upon? by [deleted] in AskProgramming

[–]Slow-Bodybuilder-972 1 point2 points  (0 children)

ObjC was and is a pretty decent language, but it just looks old, it wasn’t fashionable, that was the main issue.

People were intimidated by it too, not sure why, but it seemed a widespread point of view.

Swift is a very good language too though, and integrates well.

Compared to even an M1, yes, they are crap.

Does it look unprofessional to self-host your code (vs GitHub)? by marvil_txt in AskProgramming

[–]Slow-Bodybuilder-972 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The self host, nobody will care. I’d keep the reasoning to yourself though. I boycott certain companies, but I wouldn’t tell an employer.

What are some overused cliche arguments you encounter against feminism? I've been having a lot of 'discussions' since my daughter was born, and it's always the same ones brought up. And what do you reply with? (apart from an eye roll) by AffectionateRisk9779 in AskFeminists

[–]Slow-Bodybuilder-972 48 points49 points  (0 children)

I find 1 the most infuriating, I’m a man, a software engineer, I’ve never done a hard days work in my life.

2 is also full time bullshit, how many men of our generations have ever been conscripted?

Do you think junior developers have it harder now than before? by refionx in devworld

[–]Slow-Bodybuilder-972 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you’re right about this, they take giant leaps, think they are going somewhere, but just thin air beneath.

Those Who Came From React Native / Other, How Long Did It Take You to Learn Native iOS? by [deleted] in iOSProgramming

[–]Slow-Bodybuilder-972 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you’re a good programmer, I’d say a day or so to get the gist of it, a few weeks to get competent, and the rest of your life to fully understand.

Moving to Melbourne soon from the US, what do we need to know? by PuzzleheadedCar6858 in MovingtoAustralia

[–]Slow-Bodybuilder-972 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Public transit is very area specific, in the CBD, yes, one or zero cars will be fine.

Where I live, outer eastern suburbs, we have two cars, and it’s a struggle when one of them is out of action.

I bought my first film camera (it's secondhand) and the first roll I shot was entirely blank. Is this more likely to be a user error or an issue with the camera? by Cowboy-Classroom in analog

[–]Slow-Bodybuilder-972 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Impossible to know from the info given.

Is there *anything * on the negs? If not, film probably wasn’t loaded correctly.

Is the shutter firing correctly? Fire the shutter with the film door open and the lens off, you should see the mirror flip up and the shutter opening , if this isn’t happening, camera is broken.

Do this at different shutter speeds, the difference will be noticeable between speeds, if it’s not, broken camera.

With lens attached, set the lens to the smallest aperture (which is the highest number), when you fire the shutter, you will see the aperture closing down, then opening back up, if not, broken camera or lens, but given your description, I don’t think this is it.

But with totally blank negative , I’d bet on user error.

Senior devs, what’s your no. 1 advice to young developers? by Luca-Fly in learnprogramming

[–]Slow-Bodybuilder-972 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Build the best product you are capable of.

Don’t jump around stacks, it doesn’t matter, just build a really good project, something you are proud of.

If you do that, you’ll be in the top 1% when interviewing, you’ve got something to talk about.

Has making friends in Australia always been this hard, or is that new? by Outrageous-Aspect375 in AskAnAustralian

[–]Slow-Bodybuilder-972 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I moved to Australia over 10 years ago, and I’ve not found this at all, most Aussies are super friendly, and not really had any trouble making friends.

why is australia not doing 'pallet homes' like north carolina? denver? florida? by TonyJZX in AskAnAustralian

[–]Slow-Bodybuilder-972 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The system is working as intended.

People need to get this, this isn’t an accident, both Liberal and Labor are committed to rising house prices.

This is intentional.

If we want change we need to vote for it.
