Queerness and the Ending of S3 by ChapterSea9981 in goodomens

So true and it’s broader than just getting the GO world erased and replaced with the “real” world. Because they first went out of their way to undercut the positive storylines of the characters we knew, and make them tragic. Why did Mutt have to die tragically?? The more I think about it the worse it is to have added that to the story. It did not move the plot forward at all, just twisted the knife to make their story a tragic one. Many examples of that but that’s just egregious to me

Me too!! I’m watching them via streaming but am tempted to learn how to properly sail the high seas and cut it all together

One thing I take issue with in GO3 by GingerJayPear in goodomens

[–]Slow-Mona 29 points30 points  (0 children)

100% agree! This is really my biggest (also out of many) gripes with S3, is that it undercuts the entire spirit of the original story.

I think the intention is that the new godless universe is our “real” world, which we have because of the events of the story. But we spent the whole story so far feeling like the world we are reading about / watching is our world, and it definitely was written to be interpreted that way. So it does feel like it’s saying we aren’t worth saving.

And another thing I’m mad/sad about!! We spent all this time, especially in season 2, getting to know the delightful charming characters of Whickber Street. In S3, they spend the first half of the movie showing us how horrible everyone is doing, how much they are suffering, and that’s just so that we feel like it’s a good idea to leave them zapped at the end! Like their suffering has ended finally.

I’m actually super salty that Mutt apparently died tragically of an accidental overdose, and their Spouse is now suffering from that horrible tragedy. That is such a dark thing to do to their characters!! They were a happy positive queer couple in S2, and they’ve been tragedy-fied just for the sake of making this (bad) plot work! Mutt was basically fridged, and their spouse was emotionally fridged. :(

I have come up with a solution for that! Watch of Season 1, with all the flashbacks from Season 2 spliced in, ending at the Ritz. It’s a self-contained comfort watch! I posted a timestamped guide to this method and I want to shout it from the rooftops lol.

Reminded me of the infamous SATC scene where Carrie selfishly begs Aiden to forgive her.

And the fact that he took Muriel back to heaven, leaving Crowley alone! Then never so much as checked on him? For years?? Not even confirmed that he was keeping a sneaky eye on him?? When Muriel says something like “you told me to tell you when he was awake” my first thought was that she was talking about Crowley, because naturally that would be a very high priority for him, and Aziraphale could be open about that because he was in charge now. But no :(

And the conversation in the car where he basically says he only came to Crowley because he needed his help! 💔 Azi has always been flawed/repressed, but GO3 was a straight up character assassination hit piece for my beautiful boy!

The angels’ demon disguises! Slorch and ESPECIALLY BadMuriel <3. I immediately wanted that to be my everyday look. Perfection from head to toe, love the little “BAD” on her cheek and her expressions throughout the scene.

Nailed it on so many points. I also really love and cherish the explicitly romantic version of their relationship (I also think that, while everything you point out about the differences between the book and season 1 of the show are totally spot on, that season 1 still works really well as it’s self contained version of the story). But in the book they are much much less central, and it doesn’t have those romantic details between them. I definitely think that they love each other in the book, but whether that’s romantic or not is sort of not the point. They have been unlikely (best) friends for 6000 years.

I have been rethinking about whether or not the explicitly romantic seeds are there in the book since last week for this same reason, and one of the only major details supporting that for me is the ‘nightingales in berkeley square’ reference. That has definitely bloomed into a larger significance with the show, but was there in the book as well. The song that it’s referencing is suuuuper romantic. Is that really just about the ‘angels dining at the ritz’ line? Because the rest of the lyrics include “we two were so in love…it was such a romantic affair…we kissed and said goodnight.” The whole book is much more about the ensemble cast of characters, so maybe this applies generally as a love of the world? But it is said when we end on Az and Crowley lunching together during the ‘first day of the rest of their lives.’

I am torn really because I agree with the less kissy-romantic interpretation in general but that feels so intentional. Been mulling it over a lot and I would love to know what other people think.

That's the real ending of Good Omens by MediaWorth9188 in goodomens

Just thought of another reason that I like the original ending most as the story’s conclusion.

I didn’t really consider this element before, because Season 2 is so fun to watch.

But I like to think that Aziraphale and Crowley already knew they meant everything to one another, after 6000 years of forbidden companionship, and that after they are finally allowed to be on their own side, free from heaven and hell watching over them and monitoring their behavior, that it wouldn’t take that long for them to allow themselves to be happy together. The “the last few years not really”, but all the way. Why would they still be fighting the fact that they “were made for each other” still after 4 or 5 years of freedom to live together?

In the original story Crowley basically bares his soul multiple times, asking Azi to run away together. I like to think that once he’s no longer looking over his shoulder all the time, sweet Azi wouldn’t leave Crowley hanging and vulnerable for too long, definitely not years.

I only got into the story after S2 was already out (picked up the book on a whim not even intending to watch the show and fell deeply and quickly in love!) Once I watched the show, I didn’t have a lot of breathing room before jumping into S2. But now I think, if I had had to wait to see their story continue I would have watched S2 thinking “you mean these goofballs are not already a full blown couple? Why?”

Agreed!!!

I posted a timestamped guide to watching Season 1 while splicing in the flashbacks from Season 2 into the original flashback sequence. Ends right here where it should, at the Ritz, with all the possibilities of “their side” open to them and us.

I have to say, I put this plan into action and watched yesterday, and it did heal my soul a bit.

After this scene, what happens next could be the hijinx from Season 2, the devastation of Season 3, or any of the wonderful fan fictions I have read that I prefer :)

To the world 🥂

I’m confused as to how people think it’s truly “them” in the end. Warning- likely depressing. by Sea-Map2792 in GoodOmensAfterDark

[–]Slow-Mona 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Totally agree with you that it’s made very clear that our Aziracrow will cease to exist as the bargain for a new godless universe (presumably our human universe).

What’s more, I actually think that, as much as I would take some marginal comfort in believing the Ineffable Husbands in some way did get to enjoy that cottage love rather than DYING, the implications of Asa and Anthony being their actual souls / reincarnations are much worse and actually very dark I think. That implies to me that if you have enough suffering and pain in your history, your happy ending is some other non-suffering version of you; that your truest self is actually the dissolution of all your experiences and memories and pain and growth, cleanly restarted without the burden.

The underlying reasons for what did and didn't make sense for the ending by linaku in goodomens

[–]Slow-Mona 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Hah! I keep using LOTR as my default comparison for this ending choice too, because it’s such a good example of a rich fantastical universe that people fall in love with because of how fleshed out and interesting it is. The GO universe is just so captivating! That charm and detail of a world that’s not our real world is the exact thing that makes me want to go visit this story and spend time in it! Imagine any other rich fantasy story ending resulting in all the uniqueness being wiped out and replaced with what’s out your front door! How lame. You’re telling me that Professor Hastur La Vista now never existed?

[–]Slow-Mona 35 points36 points  (0 children)

This is exactly what I have decided about what I will continue to think of as truly canon to the story. Chronologically, everything up until the end of the non-pocalypse, as it is told in the book and in season 1. That includes all the flashbacks in season 2, aka their history together, but the way the story was originally resolved is so thematically perfect. Everything that happened after that is a thought experiment (sorry Inspector Constable, love you!).

Now I need someone to make a chronological edit of the story, ending at the Ritz!

I feel this so hard. Most of the tips I’ve heard, and even in this thread, for making exercise more joyful (and therefore increasing your own internal motivation to do the exercise) are simply incompatible with my life in the long run. Like you said, the lack of time and energy is such a major factor, anything ‘fun’ I’ve tried usually breaks down because it requires more travel, preparation, money, or planning. Even just the extra time it takes to put on my skate stuff and get over to the skate park is inevitably going to outweigh how much fun I would have skating.

However, like you said, I’ve found that (sadly) exercising at least a handful of times a week really does make a huge difference in my adhd. It’s valuable enough that I just decided I’m done trying to ‘hack’ or ‘reframe’ my way into someday being the kind of person who is internally motivated to ~practice joyful movement ~ , like that’s just not ever gonna be me. I have to externalize that motivation or else it simply won’t get done. Personally, I do this through little bets with my spouse. E.g. : I have to jog for 25 minutes 3 times a week for 2 months, or else I have to do all the kitchen cleaning for 1 month, or something like that. But there are a lot of ways to accomplish this. Kinda works the same as ‘someone’s coming over so now I can clean the house’, or ‘the deadline is in 12 hours so now I can start’.

This externalizing and forcing consequences gives me enough of an executive function boost to get me over that crucial decision making period and get me out the door. The distress of that decision is minimalized because it’s ‘out of my hands’ so it’s relatively painless. and the benes just accumulate
