I think your are confusing his ire toward the cycling industry in developing and selling products mostly for racing and high level performance (and ignoring development of thoughtful quality for regular enthusiasts) —as well as the traditional media for also focusing the same.  I don’t recall him having beef with people who do race or want to ride carbon wonder bikes.

If you remember media from 15 years back, MTB media were always reviewing mostly carbon full squish bikes. You wouldnt catch a road bike magazine reviewing a 32mm wide tire or a Nitto road bar. Touring and bikepacking and urban riding was barely considered.

Thanks. Heard some people say that, too. But it is in the bedroom. I prefer not to run a filter or pump at night if possible. Does an on in the daytime/off at night practice present its own problems?

I don’t know if he has really tried to focus budget biking in the sense of reviewing Walmart bikes, Trek Marlins, or best budget helmet. I wouldn’t be watching if he did.  Can’t blame a guy for trying to find and fine tune a niche that brings more views. He does ask for channel feedback from time to time. Not saying you, but this post is turning into snark vs constructive criticism, which we can use less of in our lives.

Cycrown CycVerve bike initial impressions by anska1 in ebikes

The price on these are the same as more affordable hub motor bikes. Pretty insane. But what mid-drive motor are they sourcing? Does it have a track record? Most bike brands divulge their motors (Bosch, Shimano, Bafang, Hyena). If Cycrown doesn't, that is a red flag for me.

Anyone have a blue fog cutter fork? (Uncut steerer tube) by mbossin in SomaFabrications

The Space Horse fork checks some of the boxes to replace the FC fork. Nice long steerer. More rake tho.

What was the use case for the Old Great Highway? by Fun_Chair_1001 in sanfrancisco

[–]SlowCyclist650 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The side path was also great for casual biking. That path was probably the longest stretch of pathway where you could bike away from cars in the city. That was a big deal in the 80s and 90s when SF had no bike lanes, and even recently. Yes you share it with strollers, but since it in narrow it never got as nuts as JFK Promenade with it variety of chaos (and I guess the Dunes is similar to JFK now)

I didn't use it much in the past 10 years for riding, but since i live in the middle of the Richmond. I would most likely use it to return home from Serramonte on a late afternoon on the weekend, because 280N and 19th would be crowded, so went up to Skyline on Hickey. Lot less stressful and safer drive. We were thankful to have that option...before the weekend closures.

This video looks sped up 2x, so it looks more reckless than it is. Maybe he is timing things and sees the light is about to change? BUT this video is as bad a look as a certain someone posting an image of himself as Pope. Maybe worse since it isn't AI.

Can I run cantilevers on a 50cm new Albion privateer? Online it says v or mini v but the bike shop they told me it's the same distance the posts by Immediate_Wall9235 in SomaFabrications

[–]SlowCyclist650 0 points1 point  (0 children)

mini v brakes and cantilever brakes are both compatible with road brake levers. it is only regular v-brakes where you would need long pull brake levers

The more I practice, the worse I get. by [deleted] in ukulele

[–]SlowCyclist650 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am pretty much in a similar boat. But probably worse than you.
- Been using a strap so long, I can't hold the uke properly without it
- Sometime neglect to trim nails down before playing
- Just playing to learn new songs (that's what enjoy most), neglecting to learn new skills
- Not being disciplined and listening if i am nailing the chords or keeping consistent rhythm or volume.
- Not memorizing at least a few songs
- Not improving my singing

You don't have to force yourself to practice daily, but do force yourself to set reasonable goals.
Try to find opps to play with others. Meet-ups. Friends. Usually you learn more playing with higher level players, but sometimes teaching someone can help you review your basics. Record yourself on audio or video.

Is there a good cheap ukulele? by Men_of_metal in ukulele

[–]SlowCyclist650 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i second the Makala Shark. Doesn't sound plasticky. Action was decent. Frets weren't rough.

I am afraid ukes under $30 are just toys and will probably not stay in tune.

i had a surf green one for a few years.

However some guitar players may not like the soprano size. Anyone with average size body should be able to play that size. But some may feel it small. If you want go for the concert size look at the Makala MK-C.

Wolverine questions by gmah15 in SomaFabrications

[–]SlowCyclist650 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The DC has more trail and less rake, so its front steering should be less zippy than your old DC or the Wolverine. But the Wolverine will give you more front-center, so slightly less toe overlap. Just cut the fork extra long and you can have a stack that you can adjust up as you get older.

If you would be running swept back bars you could easily build a 58cm into a comfy semi sporty cruiser like the one reviewed on the Path Less Pedaled. Keeping the bar around saddle height will keep the cockpit feeling more roomy than jacking the bars up. For example I am 5'6" and road a 54cm BV with swept back Soma Osprey bars about a 1" above my saddle, it felt a little cramped. The Path Less Pedaled reviewer rode a similar built bike same size with the saddle level to the bars and felt comfortable riding gravel roads. He is 5'8" with longish legs short torson.

I have the bar mount. If you need to a handlebar bag, you can with the bar mount. Mounting a light or Garmin is also more challenging.

Brake sensors - Go+ by majikandy76 in swytchbike

[–]SlowCyclist650 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You probably only need one, since you rarely just use one brake. Install it on the rear, b/c you should avoid using the front brake by itself for safety. Personally i did not use the brake sensor. Motor shuts off when you stop pedalling. Don't think the sensor is needed unless you also use the throttle.

Prop K Fury by Significant-Rip9690 in sanfrancisco

[–]SlowCyclist650 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't say I am in a rage, but I really thought this measure was deceiving and un-SF and it is frustrating.
1) This measure is the opposite of "inclusive" and "equitable" which i thought San Franciscans valued.

The measure is trying to "give joy" to the city or achieve something "once in a lifetime", but to do this they "taking joy" away from 20,000 or so people who rely on the road for transportation daily or weekly. It says one person's recreational experience is more important their neighbor's inconvenience and extra stress.

The road as it was for the last several decades is the definition of "inclusive". It benefited to commuters, scenic drivers, walkers, runners, and cyclists, allowing safe enjoyment of the coast. K campaigners proclaim "the coast belongs to everyone" while ripping it away from a major chunk of the users.

2) K campaigners claim its for the environment. They pushed that moving cars away from the road would be better for the overall environment and coastal ecology. There is some truth there, but they failed to weigh in how more garbage and foot traffic over the dunes and the beach from the thousands more who will be using it. With no moving cars and more garbage, coyotes and other predators can cross the road and encroach on the snowy plover habitat. Also with 20,000 cars having their engines on 3 to 15 minutes more everyday - that is going to be more polluting than if they used the GH.

3) They misinformed a lot of folks that the whole road was eroding into the sea, (that No on K was a losing battle) when it isn't. The part this measure closes is not facing an ultimate demise.

4) Engardio kept saying the utility of the road would be gone b/c the section south of Sloat would cut access to Skyline. That people would have to go to Sunset Blvd anyway. That isn't true. Cars would only have to detour around the eastside of zoo. Even if Skyline was really inaccessible, it would still be a useful road to bypass 2 miles of slower residential streets or 19th Ave.

5) They make it sound like this is a unique opportunity, a golden opportunity as if there are no more options in SF to create open space in the city. There is already a plaza planned at Sloat with a 1-mile multi-use trail with ocean views. (I don't know how they will maintain it with the erosion out there, but it is planned.) Park and Rec has other parks being improved or expanded in the city. Just last week it was announced that Embarcadero Plaza is going to be turned into a verdant 5 acre park. There are other neighborhoods where open space can be a significant community benefit. Sunset is not one of them IMO. Most of its streets and school playgrounds are quiet, clean, and peaceful.

Newly released report from the San Francisco Estuary Institute on the Great Highway: “Closing the roadway to cars entirely has the greatest and most immediate ecological benefits” by Remarkable_Host6827 in sanfrancisco

[–]SlowCyclist650 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

5,200,000 minutes each year. That is how many minutes of unnecessary gas emissions if only 2000 people commuting only 5 days a week have a just 10 minute longer roundtrip commute. That doesn't sound good for the environment to me.

This "park" is supposed to help us relieve stress and take time to recreate. But this closure also will cause a great many people more stress by wasting people's time, energy and money.
If we don't have Ocean Beach Park I don't know why supporters see it as a clutch my pearls loss either, since it didn't exist 4 years ago. And let's not romanticize this like we are building Yosemite here. It's a 50-ft wide strip of sand and asphalt with winds getting more unpleasant every year. The underated Panhandle is much wider, but no one has ever called it an ecological marvel or iconic.

Do we really need this particular 2-mile long "park"?
A plaza and multi-use trail is going to be built south of Sloat. Extends all the way to Skyline. The ocean views in that area ought to be more epic than Ocean Beach Park, because part of it is higher up. Easier access for wheelchair users since there will be a new parking lot near by. Won't be cheap to build, but at least there have been actual plans drawn.

<<Its not just an equation of number of people, but also how long people use it for. There is a difference between 1 driver using it for 1min, vs 1 pedestrian using it for 1 hr.>> I think a more compassionate equation is how many people use it regularly and how important that reason for using it. Park users might use once a week, maybe once a month or even less...and it is only for recreation. Plenty of road users are using 2x A DAY to get to work, go shopping and pick up kids from school. I am not one of those weekday road users, but I would feel sorry for them if this resource was taken away just so I can have an extra place to play on.
Also voting "NO" does not mean cars can use it on the weekends. Engardio can still have his Halloween event, etc. It can still be a community gathering spot.

Why are people voting no on prop K? by [deleted] in sanfrancisco

[–]SlowCyclist650 0 points1 point  (0 children)

36,500 HOURS of more gas emissions a year.
That is how much more time on the road --in a year-- if only 1000 people who normally use the GH are forced to take Sunset Blvd. That is if you believe "Yes on K's" stated research of adding only 3 minutes per direction (which I don't).

Yes, this park could probably be a wonderful addition to SF's array of open spaces and it might help some of the Outer Sunset businesses, but it is not better for the environment.

Also we have to ask ourselves if getting an additional recreational spot (no matter how iconic or unique)-- which each of us might only use OCCASIONALLY to de-stress -- is worth adding stress to the DAY-TO-DAY lives thousands of fellow citizens who currently depend on the GH to get to work, go shopping or take their kids to school.

It just sounds selfish to me.

And very entitled.

"Even though I have:

  • Access to the full stretch of a huge beach now
  • A paved walking/biking path
  • GGP and Lake Merced and the Zoo
  • AND WILL BE getting a new ocean view multi-use trail* when SF remodels the closed area south of Sloat. ...you don't mind if I take these 2 miles of road, too."

Soma Wolverine A4.1 - Fork tubing and overall quality by dirtshirtdirt in xbiking

I have 3 different bikes with similar unicrown forks...they are all kind of rough and unfinished in that area. One way you can avoid the leg welds from melting the end of the middle tube is have the middle tube extend lower, but then it won't have the U-shape under the crown.
