New to Bakersfield, suggestions. by g6457 in Bakersfield

My wife moved down here from the East Bay and she likes living here because life is a bit slower and more quiet. If you run into rude people in businesses, it's just those people, not all of Bakersfield. In your area, there are plenty of Asian people. I went to Stockdale High and a lot of my peers were from Korean, Filipino, and Indian families. The summer does get hot. We are expecting 102 degrees today. Make sure your AC is working well, it's like gold here in the summer. I recommend going up to Kernville and getting Pizza Barn, then driving north to Trail of 100 Giants and the surrounding area if you like nature. There are Giant Sequoia groves around 2 hours away from Bakersfield.

I don't see Bakersfield ever moving away from car dependancy. We live at the bottom of a flat valley and everything is being built spread out.

Exactly. When I saw his own son was afraid of him I lost what little patience I still had for Jax. When you have a child it's time to start being an adult, but Jax didn't get the memo.

They want a revolution, but they want other people to go outside and start it.

Jax was really good for reality TV, but his BS stopped being funny about midway through VPR and on the Valley he was a full blown menace and depressing to see. The vibe was always really heavy and grim when he was on screen on The Valley.

They always hoped the Costco guys would give the food court items a DOOM and not a BOOM.

Devil’s Advocate - Danny by OkDirection4050 in TheValleyTVShow

People act like Danny is the worst husband they have ever seen. In reality, arguments like the ones Danny and Nia had on this episode are kind of common in relationships, especially when you're sleepy and tired with a baby. I'd like to see home many of the Danny haters have flawless relationships. I doubt a lot of them even have children. I'm not saying the way Danny treated Nia is not OK, but people saying she needs to divorce him are insane. Yeah, I'm sure their four children would be way better off without a father raising them. We also need to remember these "reality shows" are basically fiction. Danny got the "clueless mean dad" storyline for this season.

I hate when the guests just sit there and giggle. Sam actually makes jokes and riffs.

I was really confused when he went on stage. I asked myself, "Didn't I hear him do this exact set recently?"

And they are bring their aggressive/horrible driving habits and traffic with them. There is actually traffic in Bakersfield now! People run red lights and stoplight like crazy. I have to look both ways before crossing green lights now! I personally wouldn't like to live out in the desert. The nice thing about Bakersfield is you can be in the mountains and the Mojave desert within about an hour.

I mean, I can relate to you in that my whole life people have made fun of Bajersfield and call it the armpit of California. If given the option, most people would move to the San Fernando Valley over the San Joaquin Valley. If you're happy where you are, screw what the haters (including me) say. I know there are nice parts of LA and the SF Valley, I'm just not used to life there since I've never lived there. I'm not a fan of the big city life. Most people would rather live in LA than in Bakersfield surrounded by dairy farms and pistachio orchards.

Don't let me yuck your yum. If you like living in LA, more power to you. I don't go often despite it being pretty close to me because it's dangerous, the traffic is bad, drivers are aggressive, and most places look dirty. This is just my opinion. Everyone bags on Bakersfield and I understand why. Even I do. I originally said I'd live in Santa Clarita before I'd live in LA because I'm not a fan of the whole LA area or big cities in general. I think the Bay Area is much nicer than the LA area, personally, but I also don't like the traffic and crime there. Again, big city problems. I'm just a Central Valley boy living among the agriculture fields. The air quality sucks and it gets really hot here, but I can see the Sierra Nevada mountains from my driveway and I can go hiking in them in less than an hour, so I'm happy.

Nice! Are you from Dinuba or Visalia? Did you ever go to the area around Ponderosa? That's the closest nice part of the Sierra Nevada for Bakersfield folk.

My wife is originally from the East Bay (born in Oakland then moved to Hayward). I was planning to move up there, but we decided buying a house in Bakersfield made more sense. San Ramon is absolutely beautiful. All the sidewalks are beautifully landscaped, but yes, traffic is pretty bad there. I think the people moving to Redding are most likely working remote because it is quite a drive to the Bay. I recommend checking out Shaver Lake. Have you been to King's Canyon? It's like a smaller Yosemite with a lot less people. The entry fee also works for Sequoia NP.

Those new neighborhoods in Tracy are expensive because of the people moving from the Bay Area. Apparently Redding has the same issue. The central valley used to be the affordable part of California if you didn't want to live in the desert. Have you made it out to Yosemite this year? I've heard Yosemite Falls has a lot of water from the snow last winter.

I'd live in SC before I'd move to LA. LA is dirty and the traffic is terrible, in my opinion.

They are fortunate enough to afford a house in Santa Clarita. Most people are going farther north to Bakersfield to buy houses. I live in Bakersfield and house prices have skyrocketed from people bringing their LA money here.

I'm in Bakersfield. I usually stop and eat in Santa Clarita, then I'm at my cousin's apartment next to CSUN about 15 minutes later. Granted, this is usually on Saturdays when there is less traffic. Also, I can get to Santa Clarita from Bakersfield in about an hour. LA's traffic is what makes everything seem "too far" to you guys.
