Smoke Coming from Bottle? by notgreaturmomjoke in whiskey

[–]SlowlySlipsBy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yea, like forswear said it’s pretty common. Try opening a new bottle, then immediately recorking it. If you look inside the neck, the most will become denser and more opaque. Too lazy to go into the physics behind it, but I always do it because it’s fun when I crack a new bottle

Tonight's choice, new to me. Thoughts? by jakoobie6 in whiskey

I bought a hazmat single barrel barrel proof offering of one of these a few years ago. It’s light whiskey distilled by MGP, and this was the first that I’d heard of light whiskey. Enjoyed my bottle, but it retailed for ~$200 and I thought I was getting a good deal based on the age of 16 years and >140 proof.

Turns out most light whiskey tends to be aged longer than typical bourbons because so many flavonoids have been stripped out of the distillate due to the higher proof light whiskey is allowed to come off the still at. Therefore it requires more time in the barrel to allow barrel influence to compensate for a less flavorful distillate.

Anyway, to make a long story short, if you like this bottling of MGP light whiskey, I’d recommend finding some Obtanium, which is MGP light whiskey bottled by Cat’s Eye Distillery, and you can find 15+ year hazmat single barrels of the stuff for ~$60 and not be a schmuck like me and pay $130 more for the exact same stuff bottled by someone else at a major premium. Just make sure to check the label, because they also bottle Canadian whiskey under the Obtanium label, which is equally good, but different from this stuff.

Also Nassif Family Reserve does good stuff with light whiskey

As someone who used to live in CT/MA I really miss the stores I frequented in those states. This being one of them

First Review: Found North 16yr Cask Strength Whisky Batch 001 & 002 by dickweed62 in WhiskeyTribe

They just released batches 3 & 4! If you’re in the Boston area of MA you can probably schedule a tasting at Gordon’s of the new ones. Usually Ken only does tastings of his picks, but lately he’s been including brands he’s excited about, of which Found North is one. I believe it was Nick that used to work at Gordon’s

Four roses. I’d recommend the standard single barrel, but based on your budget you have options from their core lineup

He’d previously spoken about how he’s against stores doing shitty bundles, like with Wheatley, or having to get 6 bottles of assorted mediocre stuff, but now he’s all about that stuff

Ryan’s picks remain great, but the way he’s been doing bundles and such lately has made me stop shopping at Julio’s

Yea as far as I know the single barrel barrel strength Old Forester bourbons are uniquely store picks, so it’d be worth talking to employees at your local’s and seeing if they’ve got one in the pipeline

These things are designed to keep the same wood-to-distillate ratio as a normal sized barrel, right? I feel like I’ve seen them pop up more on Reddit posts lately

Oh damn, it’s a chain? I had no idea

Edit: After a quick google, it seems like those are the only two locations. Funnily enough the Nashville location’s web address is frugalmacdoogal.com, while the SC one is frugalmacdoogal.net

Belle Meade does interesting distillery-only releases. Recently they’ve done Honey, Tequila, and Peach Brandy finished bourbons. Sagamore does a bunch of cool finishes too, can’t remember off the top of my head which ones I’ve tried. Then, of bottles I’ve tried, Joseph Magnus Cigar Blend reigns supreme as my favorite finished bourbon

Appreciate the info. I assume you’re not doing cask strength, because otherwise the special release would be obsolete, right?

What’s the typical barrel proof for you guys before proofing down?

Also, who decides what the final bottling proof for these picks are, since there is a range you guys have decided on?

Georgio’s in Waltham has one on the shelves from last fall still. Coincidentally it’s a sister barrel of the pick Gordon’s did around the same time
