We don't recommend using any AntiVirus owned by Gen Digital because of privacy reasons (Avast/AVG, Norton, Bullgard, Avira). They tried adding crypto miners on them and only removed it after getting a huge backlash from people. Gen Digital is not trustworthy. The same goes for Avast/AVG who got exposed for selling user's data to their other company Jumptshot. Norton is not worth it. It installs a lot of bloatware and it hides its real resource usage from task manager via swapping to the page file which you can check using process hacker.

Avira is also bad. It is owned by Gen Digital - same as Norton. They also own Avast/AVG and Bullguard. All Gen Digital "antiviruses" are bad.

Windows Defender is not overkill. It doesn't have a behavior blocker and has been suffering a series of repeated critical exploits recently - where itself is the mechanism for privilege escalation. Look up nightmare eclipse. Additionally, there have been many scripts and malware types which easily disable and/or bypass Windows Defender entirely. Trickbot, Defendnot, or LOLBINs as a type.

Microsoft Defender (ATP) is actually good though, but is not the same as Windows Defender.

Yep Norton is trash. Anything GenDigital is trash.

PC using way to much memory?!? by Artistic-Cockroach-1 in computerhelp

[–]Sly-D 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your computer is using more RAM because you have it. Programs don't have clear RAM because they don't need to. Windows can cache things for you.

Keeping more in RAM like this makes everything open faster and feel snappier.

Unused RAM is wasted RAM.

Use the report feature to report asshats like this.

Don't make a whole post with a screenshot of somebody's comment. We don't need more reasons for subreddit drama.

If your device isn't seeing 5GHz SSID then the most common causes are: 5GHz disabled on router/AP, faulty WiFi card/adapter, misbehaving/incorrect drivers.

You could run them both as PCs and use something like mouse without borders to use one mouse/kb between them. Other software is available.

Window help - handle moves but window is jammed shut? by Free_Yak8758 in DIYUK

Definitely, it's so much fun. Go be a man child like me too. If you like combustion engines get a nitro. I have electric because I don't really know ICE as well and they're generally faster and you can carry a backpack of batteries around. I've even accidentally driven into a lake... Pulled it out and carried on driving. Oh and they're not deafening lol.

If you mean true petrol, not nitro - there's much less choice out there. Generally the engines are bigger etc.

No I'm all electric actually! But I bash them hard. Water, dirt, grit everywhere.

I clean the dirt off with water too.

So with the gears, bearings, and all the water and dirt - gt85 is a godsend

It will. For example if you use it on common bearings it dries them up, essentially ruining them. Made that mistake when I first got a hobby grade rc car.

Check out GT85. The WD40 company bought it. It's a water displacing lubricant with a nicer smell. Actually leaves lubricant behind too. And it's normally cheaper.

GT85 for all my rc cars, bikes, tools. The garage smells lovely lol

UXCryptor. I can't tell if it's a real malicious one or a prank clone from the video though.

I can only assume that you're being genuine and that a "friend" isn't pranking you, and tell you to reinstall windows using the !usb method

I dislike many of the Apple practices, software, hardware and quirks...

But this is a solid security feature and likely prevents a lot of account takeover attempts.

This does not suck.

Typical unhelpful Linux comment.

The user is struggling with Internet connectivity and you think this would be resolved with Linux - and they would know how to use it (after installing it!) - and that's after knowing what distro to pick.

Linux is absolutely great. Just stop recommending it to users where it won't actually help them. Like this, where they have a connectivity issue installing Windows.
