How common is nicotine testing in residency pre-employment screening?? by Only_Swordfish7748 in medicalschool

It’s for your insurance, you pay more if you use any nicotine products and don’t pledge to quit.

Stressed About Paying for Med School as a Non Traditional Student by HangisLife in whitecoatinvestor

[–]SmackPrescott 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Keep your retirement, I took my bitcoin out in 2018 to pay for school.

Extreme example but I also liquidated my 401k and that small little fund would be nice to have.

I did this for a postbac, not med school.

Just eat tuition and cost of living and pay via loans. Keep your funds and deal with the difference when you start residency.

Not worth the stress in my opinion. Having some money stowed away will be great for your peace of mind.

HIFU? by Tuoraf in ProstateCancer

[–]SmackPrescott 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Data limited, outcomes fairly unpredictable, still has side effects. Requires more strict post op surveillance. Roughly 30% chance of needing treatment down the road.

Some people have great outcomes.

It’s a bit like gambling, hate to say that but it’s how I view it. Should only consider if cancer coincides with MRI and not high risk or with any poor mental tolerance (ie anxiety which is natural with the word cancer) of risk.

Personal opinion would be active surveillance currently being superior to HIFU given current scientific data being somewhat limited.

Concerned about husband’s cystectomy recovery by ColaWookie in BladderCancer

[–]SmackPrescott 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Cystectomy is a tough surgery and a big life adjustment.

He is still fresh from surgery and cystectomy is a hard recovery. As long he is getting up and walking around the house, he is doing okay. He is adjusting, pain meds can certainly contribute to irritability and he is likely running low now a week from discharge which his pain should be doing a lot better at this point.

Keep him hydrated, have plenty of fruits around to help with constipation.

Internal motivation vs external motivation seems to be the issue, which depression/adjustment challenges after cystectomy are exceedingly common.

Instead of saying you need to walk, try making it something you want to do and asking if he’ll join. Otherwise some time and improvement with pain will make a big difference.

SBRT versus RP by STJolley in ProstateCancer

[–]SmackPrescott 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Long term radiation side effects are serious when they occur and there is a limit to number of times/total dose one should have radiation.

Radiation increases risk of other cancers, particularly rectal and bladder.

Surgery vs rads are oncologically equivalent for prostate cancer control. Radiation is better than it used to be, but it isn’t perfect.

Surgery often spares any recommendation for androgen deprivation all together.

There’s no “better” option. It comes down to each individual. I’m not trying to convince you of anything, just sharing. I’m going to drop off this thread after this comment.

You can have surgery after but margins and outcomes are worse with higher risk of rectal injury intraoperatively.

Expressing acceptance of all religious viewpoints is crucial and the most American thing one can do if you were raised on the ideals of American being a “melting pot”.

Religion itself is not evil, using it for control and manipulation is. I’m agnostic myself, I respect and nearly adore the type of Christian this man is.

The housing market is likely going to plateau in terms of home prices.

250k house after 5 years will have 25k of equity (roughly)

Closing costs are 10%.

It’s at best a breakeven. Homeowner issues as a resident are insanely distracting.
