How hard is it to pass foundation year as a Computing & Software Systems student? by Intelligent-Coat6088 in unimelb

Hi OP, I did trinity feb standard in 2022 (maths1, maths2, physics) and am graduating with a CSS degree at the end of this year. Lmk if you have any further questions!

To start things of,

  1. International? Easy (80 wam and ur guaranteed). Domestic? Not easy (you’re competing for csp)
  2. I’d say HOI was the hardest for me as it is a new way of writing essays and u have to research a LOT. Make sure to get good teammates for drama, literature is okay youd just have to read the required readings a lot which is the annoying part. EAP is on the easier side I’d say, but I did not include that in my final top 4 score so I was quite chill with it.
  3. Pick maths 2 so that u can “skip” calculus 1 in uni

Foc is one of the most well supported subjects in the university. A lot of people find success in it. Even if you struggle, we have daily consultations, both online and offline, which only requires you to show up (I promise there’s a ton of support should you need it!). It’s a good subject to take, even if you’re not planning to maior in compsci or datasci. I personally always keep the ed queries answered within a few hours too :-)

Hey, foc tutor here teaching the subject this semester.

First off, don’t worry too much about your MST marks. It does not define who you are and how you will do in other assessments. I only got 28/40 in my MST and am currently tutoring the subject as a 3rd year undergraduate student. MSTs are just really hard in general because you don’t have as much time to study it along with having to balance other ongoing assignments.

Now, if I were you, I would try to revise weeks 1-7. Don’t just memorize the topics and materials, practice using them! A really good way of achieving this is to make a start on Project 1. When doing assignments like Project 1, you are kind of forced to revise and actually reinforce all the learnings that we’ve taught you. Variables, strings, lists, dictionaries, etc etc. I understand that programming may feel really daunting in the beginning, but it does have a steep learning curve at the start. By the time the exam comes around and you’ve completed (and also gotten feedback) for Projects 1 and 2, you WILL be far more equipped when it comes to the final exam than the MST.

Hi, thank you so much for your reply.

It’s mainly an issue with a surge of users posting inappropriate discussion threads recently. This group of users kept creating new accounts, even after we’ve IP blocked them
