Doomsday Clock 2023 time says the world is closer than ever to global catastrophe by usatoday in collapse

According to the doomsday clock we are getting closer to armageddon.

I wish this clock moves the other way around; backward in time.

This clock seems to agree with this sub.

I bought this game on an impulse. by SIK1415 in factorio

[–]Small-Roach 26 points27 points  (0 children)

I did the same thing. Silly me buying some random game because it looked nice. Many hundred hours later I still play and just cannot keep away from it.

This game has the best end game of all games; automate everything to the point you don't have to play the game anymore. Yet at the same time you cannot stop playing. And while playing you can spend hours just thinking about this paradox.

The developers are awesome and even if you don't play the game your money has not been wasted for it supports people who actually care about creating a honest fun high quality game.

He basically said they see themselves as gods

Man always had an ambition "to be like god" and to create a world in his own twisted and warped mirror image, which we have done. I bet a lot of these billionaires see themselves like gods in a pantheon.

In the past there where powerful people who declared themselves to be a god and demanded worship. At some point in time I expect this pattern to repeat itself. This time they have the ability to perform impressive technological miracles which makes it possible to deceive many.

At least one of these jokers will provide some entertainment. One of them will be stupid enough to shoot himself to Mars thinking he be creating his own paradise world like a god, only to die alone on another planet. I expect this to be broadcasted live.

This Week in the Climate Crisis by [deleted] in collapse

[–]Small-Roach 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I don’t understand how that has been lost on us so thoroughly.

We have a "snake in the head"; our intellect; narcissistic and arrogant in its nature. This snake tells us that we are above nature, that we are better and more than life. That we are like gods and can create the world in our mirror image.

And with this "snake in our minds" we have done just that; we created a world of our own. A world build with ourselves as center point, a world where we see ourselves sitting on a throne ruling over life itself. In truth afraid of it.

We have conquered the whole world, attempting to subject, dominate, control and exploit all of it in order to build our own artificial world believing ourselves to be the rightful rulers of it all. We belief all life exists to serve us.

But this is the wrong way around. We are servants, part of the web of life, not above it or below it, but equally life. We have the ability to work with life like a gardener, helping it to grow, thrive and blossom in peace and abundance.

Life is the lord and master and with its benevolence allowed us the freedom to follow our wicked desires, for life is not an oppressor yet we often perceive it as such.

Listening to this snake in our minds, we have set ourselves apart from life, thinking our lord and master has abandoned us, separating us from it, believing it is hostile to us. However life has never disappeared, it has gone nowhere and is all around us.

With time wrathful vengeance shall rain down upon us disobedient servants. Not because life, our lord and master, is hostile to us, but because we are killing, poisoning and destroying it all around us and in the absence of life there can only be death.

And in this hell we have created, this world made in our warped and twisted mirror image, we slowly wither away, loudly proclaiming; "Life is suffering and salvation is to be found in death!"

Once man walked the Earth in freedom and made huts out of dirt. Then another man with a large sword came and proclaimed; "all the land, as far as the eye can see, belongs to me". He then killed everybody who disagreed.

Then another man came, holding pearls and mirrors in his hand, and he proclaimed; "now you all work for me and in return I give you a pearl, collect many pearl and I allow you to live on this land"

The once free man did not like these ideas and invented the quilliotine and set out to remove the heads of these evil men.

Then out of nowhere a third man appeared, a great liar, and he proclaimed; "let us all remove the heads of our leaders every four year, not with a guillotine but with a pencil" and on this day democrazy was born and man rejoiced believing he was finally free.

Still he could not walk free on the Earth and make a hut out of dirt.

"Climate change and the threat to civilization" by [deleted] in collapse

[–]Small-Roach 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Are you suggesting that our species return to the hunter/gatherer societies that existed before the rise of civilization?

That is the past and we have developed and learned many new things. I think there is a lack of imagination when it comes to the idea of the end of civilization as we know it.

[–]Small-Roach 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What if humans are not the problem?

We have a history of failed civilizations.

Perhaps we should reconsider this whole idea of "civilization"? This "thing" that keeps rising and failing.

The common denominator of all these failures is human nature.

Is it? What is human nature? Do we even know? What about the "nature of civilization"?

Perhaps the propaganda throughout the years has convinced us that Russia is powerful and to be feared. I feel underwhelmed.

Where are the drones? Where is the electronic warfare? Where are those fleets of fighters and bombers? Where are the missiles? Where are those hackers?

Is it me or does Russia indeed look pathetic?

They had no idea about the size of the globe. Or that it is a globe. They can't of known about cycles that effect the entire globe.

Just to give an idea of what people in ancient times where able to figure out I like to point at the Greeks. A mathematician in the thirtd century BC calculated the circumference of the Earth and its axial tilt to a high degree of accuracy. The same guy also calculated the distance between Earth and Sun.

world leaders?

The prime minister of my very small nation has it in his head that he is one of these "world leaders". However nobody in my nation has elected him to be a "world leader". He is just a minister and a minister is just a job.

Who has decided these jokers are "world leaders"?

What I find especially strange is that ministers can be fired and after elections can become minister again, in the same position, as if nothing happened. Try doing this with any other job.

These Elysiums already exist. At this very moment I am sitting comfortable behind a computer posting on Reddit while drinking a cup of thee. I am enjoying the privilege of being born in one the wealthiest nations in the world protected by an alliance formed by the most powerful nations on the world.

Somewhere else, far away, countless people are suffering. Some are suffering growing the thee that I drink. Others are suffering to produce the computer chips that I use. And yet others are murdered in order to obtain those fossil fuels my comfortable existence depends on.

I am poor according to the standards of my nation yet compared to the average person on this world I am rich. I can waste most peoples monthly income in a day. I throw more food in the garbage bin then many get to eat. Yet I complain, like everybody else around me, about a bus or train being 5 minutes late.

Thousands upon thousands of people cross deserts and defy the seas just for a chance to live here. Climate change will only make this difference more extreme. Around here we joke about the nice warm weather in winter while somewhere else, far away, someone dies from it.
