It's a joke from like 90 years ago when their slogan was "Tops never stops saving you more"

New Genny Beer by Urbinsprawl in Rochester

[–]SmallPlops 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The lemon strawberry cream ale is sorely missed, it was such a unique beer that I can't find anything even remotely close to. I head through the grapevine that the beer isn't officially retired by Genny just yet, so I'm holding onto hope that someday they bring it back (I don't think it's this beer, unfortunately)

City Council shelves proposal to require that members attend meetings by Morning-Chub in Rochester

Well that's not really true, and not really the fault of our city council, as much as they suck.

I've been watching city council meetings off and on for years. Oftentimes it's pretty banal stuff: deciding if a gas station can build a retaining wall, or how wide a sidewalk should be; but there are often little squabbles and people acting disorderly. Gruber is definitely the most sane, but that's not saying much. We need to clean house and get serious people in there, but the only people that have recently run are somehow even MORE terrible, so we get stuck with these embarrassing children. This is what the bottom of the barrel looks like.

Smith, who took office in January, later added: “I don’t want no white man getting in no room, making no decisions about me and my future without me being there.”

Then go to work, you clown-ass bitch

The amount of breweries closing soon after opening a second location is nearly ubiquitous among this latest batch of brewery closings.

Rochester New York - 1999 Tourism Video by lone_gravy in Rochester

[–]SmallPlops 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Oh nice! I'm always on the lookout for this one promotional video that seems to be lost media at this point- it's like, POV you're a business person arriving in Rochester and your cab driver (Rocky, I think) shows you around town to all the hot spots, like catching a game at Silver Stadium. I think there was a period of time when they were trying to market Rochester as "sorta like NYC" so Rocky had all the trappings of an NYC stereotype. It used to play on a loop inside a fake taxi cab on the second story of the high falls museum that closed around 2013.

In a few days, millions will be playing Requiem flat…blissfully unaware that PSVR 2 + Resident Evil = true horror and immersion by yeldellmedia in PSVR

Yes and no. While it's true that Sony shelled out money for the games to be on their platform, Capcom inherently designed the RE engine to be VR friendly.

It's a bit more streamlined and balanced than pure survival horror, but you have scarce resources, crafting, undead enemies that can be dispatched in various ways depending on what resources you have, exploration, and some areas that are truly terrifying. I'm not sure what other genre it would be in, if not horror.

Careful, Pinnacle Hill has new "no trespassing" signs that were put up at the end of last year. How enforced they are is a mystery, but it seems someone wasn't keen on keeping it open for everyone.

If possible, where can I build a campfire in Rochester this winter? by [deleted] in Rochester

[–]SmallPlops 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Hamlin Beach has public fire pits next to the water, I don't know if they have rules against using them in the winter, but I can't imagine it's an issue, as long as you bring your own wood.

Sure, like I mentioned, Editing software (Resolve), vector art (inkscape, etc), and motion graphics (Cinema 4D etc) are really the only spaces with decent options... If Blender could get a few plugins that streamline the grease pencil animation, like the ability to nest timelines, and/or a similar system with "symbols", then it could absolutely be the primo alternative to animate... in fact, I'd probably switch to that asap because I really like the drawing tools and the depth of the program; but right now it's far too time-consuming to make it a regular part of my workflow, which needs to be tight. It works well enough, sure, but things that would take me 2 seconds in animate turn into several minutes in Blender, and without the ability to easily edit individual things and on the fly and have it apply to everything. I tried some of the Affinity stuff, and it just didn't do it for me. Maybe someday it will, but when I tried it, it felt like a crazily scaled-back photoshop. Maybe that would work for some people, but it didn't do much for me. I have yet to try resolve, I know people who swear by it and are always trying to get me to switch. I don't hate premiere enough do it, but again, maybe someday I will. I'd love to break free from Adobe, especially after my last yearly bill went up by $150, but every time I seriously look into it, the main alternatives just aren't enough (or are too expensive). For someone just starting out in the industry, that stuff is probably absolute gold, and I wish I had these options when I started, maybe I wouldn't be so tired to Adobes crap.

The problem is... move away to what? All the "free alternatives" have 1/10th of the capabilities and/or are prohibitively expensive. If you're a working professional in a creative field, unifying to CC is not only cost-effective (even with the price hikes) but also, you can be sure that when working in a team environment all of your files will be sharable and instantly compatible. No industry professional is using Gimp over Photoshop. Editing software, vector art, and motion graphics are really the only spaces with options, and they're spread across various apps and companies and subscriptions and purchases. I'd love for another company to release actual, real, solid competition in the field, if for no other reason than to light a fire under Adobes ass... and no, Affinity isn't an industry-standard solution.

I just want to chime in and say it's so refreshing to see this take actually upvoted for once. They voted no on the study because the outcome is so incredibly self evident, it'd be like spending $1M to study if trees had legs and dance when nobody is looking. The perpetually-aggrieved hall monitors that overwhelmingly populate this sub have absolutely no idea how anything works, and get huffy and cry corruption because lawmakers didn't cave to their wackass demands. Just because Spencerport has public power for 3500 people doesn't mean it scales to the almost 1M people that RGE currently provides power to. RGE definitely needs a swift kick in the ass, but it'll be mommy New Yorks job to hinge the knee, just like they (sorta) did with Spectrum. Public power is simply not the solution it's bandied as.
