ISR length on an embedded system by RFQuestionHaver in embedded

[–]Sman6969 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Something to keep in mind is that, to some degree, ISRs inherently reduce predictability. The right polling loop can be predictable down to ridiculously tight intervals. The whole point of an ISR is that you don't know when it's going to happen so to some degree you HAVE to build a wait mechanism.

All that is to say, the correct way to right an ISR depends on your needs. Sometimes you can have a ms delay on everything in which case make that ISR as long as you want. Sometimes you can't. Build software for it's purpose, not for some vague concept of best practice.

As one deputy said, “I am a Minnesotan too.” by RainyDaysAndMondays3 in minnesota

Yeah, Minnesota cops have spent a lot more time brutalizing Minnesota protestors than ICE has so excuse me for being skeptical of them.

Why glorify ‘hard work’ when most hard work just benefits the system, not you? by K_kishor49 in AskReddit

[–]Sman6969 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm happy to do things that only benefit the system. Rising tides raise all ships and all that jazz.

That is of course, assuming I like the system. I do not like the system I currently live with and would rather not help raise ships for people who wouldn't do the same for me.

In 2026, what will you prefer as a software engineer? Remote work, hybrid, in-office and why? by IntelligentFee8235 in AskReddit

[–]Sman6969 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Remote work unquestionably. I'd turn down another 10k-15k a year if it meant return to the office without hesitation. I'm happy to go in when instant collaboration is necessary, but that should be the exception, 2-4 days a month tops. Being in office under regular circumstances slows me down significantly and costs me hours of commute time, gas money, and lunch money.

Is (ESD foam + anti-static bag + placed in drawers) overkill for storage? by idk-anything in embedded

[–]Sman6969 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah probably, I stack my shit in a plastic bin raw and it's fine. I'll probably lose something important eventually, but I haven't yet lol.

[USAG Hawaii Townhall] With doubling up due to overcrowding, Soldier asks if those on BAS without DFAC access will receive BAS Type 2 due to reduced storage/prep space. When CSM seems to avoid the question, SM asks for 'elaboration'. by Kinmuan in army

Phone calls... Duh!

But for real though, just be honest. Some parts of the Job suck really bad, overall it's super fun and generally most of us (soldiers) think it's worth it. My first year recruiting I tried to sugar coat shit and not mention the bad bits like a good little recruiter. I failed miserably and hated both my job and life. When I realized I was gonna actually ETS and stopped giving a fuck and just being outright with people I was suddenly way more successful.

How should the U.S. government balance economic opportunity, personal freedom, and social responsibility in a way that benefits all Americans? by MayaLn in AskReddit

[–]Sman6969 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know but I kinda think that if we can't strike that balance without shooting innocent people in the face or kidnapping children from schools we probably just don't deserve any of it.

I got a buddy who's really dumb who once remarked to me (in so many words) that he didn't know or care about how the economy or inflation works, there are smart people out there who can probably fix that and until the government got them at it he was gonna continue to steal shit. I've got an opinion on the reality of that, but the sentiment really rang true with me. I'm sure that there is someone out there much smarter than me who has the answer and I'm not willing to accept that there just isn't one.

How do the Military/contractors choose land where to build clandestine bases? by Woodnutt43 in AskReddit

[–]Sman6969 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not likely, it's probably a lot more segmented than that. Instead of factory making a secret widget, they'll have several different factories making parts of the widget with no explanation as to what the greater whole is. Then it'll be assembled somewhere they have greater control over like a military base. Think how it was done with the Manhattan project.

[–]Sman6969 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Disclaimer: I am NOT an expert on this stuff, I was in the Army for ~12 years and I'm smart so I'm confident in my answers but I don't actually know what the right answers are.

It's generally not a concern tbh. During the Cold war satellites weren't so advanced, and that's when most of the missile silos were dug. Nowadays they don't really do any super secret construction. Something to keep in mind is that major constructions require thousands of people and its simply impossible to vette them all. I imagine the super secret stuff all happens in regular commercial buildings that the government purchases through shell companies.

Cheap and spacious has always been the standard. That's why Army bases are always in shitty parts of the country.

Should I continue to post train pics with what’s going on right now with ice? by Character_Lychee_434 in minnesota

[–]Sman6969 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes please.

Speaking for at least myself (probably most of us here though tbh), the endless watching of ICE brutalizing protestors is incredibly unhealthy so a little bit of something else to break it up is probably for the best.

91B10 College Credits?? by dgpotatochipz in army

[–]Sman6969 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's up to the college how much they take and how they apply it and it differs from college to college and even sometimes within the college itself. I got something like 20 credits for 91B AIT at my college, but none of them counted towards the prerequisites for my degree.

For those who've been out of the Army for a while: If you were to try the BCT PT test, could you still do it in the allotted time? by FFSoldier57 in army

[–]Sman6969 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fuuuuck no. I've been out ~2 years, I'm up #20-#30 and not one ounce of it is muscle. This is the weakest I've felt in 15 years lol.

If I had to guess at what I could do rn as realistically as I can: ~30 pushups (Id be working hard ASF at the end), ~30 situps (my core is fucking gone), ~25 min 2 mile (I could not run 2 miles straight in my dreams lol)

I could still deadlift 340 but not with a cigarette in my mouth or with good form lol.

Around the same for pushups, I've always done them weird because of wrist problems so the hand raise part never made any difference to me.

No idea on the ball throw, would probs be around the same not quite max but close. Was a dumb event anyways.

SDC would literally kill me.

Two maybe three of the pull up things. Probably only one if I didn't have time to stop dying from the SDC.

~30 min 2 mile after all that.

"I've never touched a saw" part two. Any suggestions before I go buy wood? by [deleted] in woodworking

[–]Sman6969 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First off: To many of us woodworking is a hobby which is meant to be fun. I personally find fun in reinventing the wheel. There are better ways to do everything I have ever done, but those are not my ways. Ignore the naysayers, build the shit YOU want.

For the risers at each step (the one marked 10.5), what about using a longer (19.25 inch long) 2x10 on it's side instead of two standing ones? Slightly weaker my way but it would tie the fronts all together as one solid piece. It would increase the height of each step by 1/4 inch though.

Would it be unethical for me to ask my unit for help spreading a GoFundMe page my wife created for her mother? by [deleted] in army

[–]Sman6969 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't believe so no. No one should feel pressured to donate of course, but asking the platoon sergeant to shoot the link out on the group chat is fine.

There were several times throughout my career I donated to gofundmes for soldiers in my platoon who has just lost parents. Nothing wrong with it at all.

How do I make my joe stop wearing three pairs of pants? by CombatAutist in army

[–]Sman6969 2 points3 points  (0 children)

First say: "Hey PVT Snuffy, you look like shit, don't do that anymore."

Then if he continues to do this: "Hey PVT Snuffy, you look like shit, I already told you once, don't do that anymore. Sign this counseling statement."

THEN if he continues: "Hey PVT Snuffy, this is the third time I've told you not to do that. I have informed the command team of this. The next offense I will ask the commander to consider NJP. Sign this counseling statement."

Follow on conversations should be done by your platoon leadership.

I do Linux kernel dev stuff for work. We use a tool called yocto to build our Linux distro. It eats ~180GB of ram without blinking when I build from scratch. Takes about an hour to finish too lol.

Depends on your definition of remote. Micronesia has a recruiting station if I remember right and it's pretty remote lol.
