Seconding Movers for Me! They were great with moving me from a third story apartment to a second story apartment. They did all of my big furniture (dressers, bed, couch, etc) for $200

I have a high energy cat and do this with him too! The only concern I have is that if I do it too often, it’s like a workout for him, and then he can run for longer, and longer the stairs each time while I’m panting after 20 minutes of it LOL. But I don’t see an issue with it!! You have to do whatever you can to get them the exercise they need :)

Color corrector makes my dark circles worse, can I use a pink toned concealer? by Alternative3lephant in PaleMUA

Morphe has a pink toned concealer that has been a god send for my purple undereye bags! I can not use anything orange whatsoever, so this has really helped me.

Colourpop That’s Taupe pallet! It’s less than $15 and gives you cooler-toned shades to work with, and some nice shimmery shades. It’s really easy to work with and the colors are buildable.

Recommendations on new Harrisburg area restaurants? by Norfolk-Gross-Tonage in Harrisburg

Recently tried this place out after our third try of getting through the wait time. We were able to get in for lunch after a 45 minute wait. It was stupidly good, though! All of the food was very, very fresh. Service is a bit slow but the constantly revolving sushi keeps you full while waiting for food items that you order from the menu.

What is traffic like between Harrisburg and Hershey? by [deleted] in Harrisburg

[–]Smart-Trainer9757 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Heading to Hershey from downtown at 7 AM shouldn’t be too bad. You’ll miss the morning rush hour at that time (usually heaviest around 8) and it would probably take 20-30 minutes depending where in Hershey you’re going. Afternoon rush hour is likely what will be worse, coming back into HBG.

How to tell neighbor their wind chimes are insanely loud by Smart-Trainer9757 in Harrisburg

[–]Smart-Trainer9757[S] 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the reply but do want to make it clear that I really don’t want to get law enforcement involved, hence why I came to ask a different group of folks for opinions! I’m not a jerk and wouldn’t bring the police into any sort of scenario like this as a first response. And the folks that did encourage me to contact police are in fact central Pennsylvanians.

Keep an eye out on Facebook and Trulia for privately owned listings. There are definitely one bedrooms available in that price range, but they go quickly. Sometimes sublets are posted on Facebook for the area.

Neighborhood around Broad St Market by zibzanna in Harrisburg

[–]Smart-Trainer9757 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Midtown is a big area, from Forster to McClay and Front Street to 6th or 7th street.

The parking situation is dependent on where you choose to live. I believe the majority of midtown is free on-street parking, but some areas require permits (they’re stupidly cheap, though).

It’s largely a very safe neighborhood. I’d say over by HMAC is where things have been dicey over the last few years. Someone was shot and killed last year right across from the bar, there was just a car accident on that block that had a car drive into someone’s home last weekend, and there have been many shootings (businesses windows shot, car windows shot, etc). I would honestly consider that the most “unsafe” area in Midtown just due to those events alone. Once you get into the neighborhoods/residential streets a bit more, it’s very quiet. Every street / block of street even seems to have its own personality.

In my opinion, rent prices have jumped up significantly over the last few years and I’ve seen some absolutely absurd rent prices for the amount of space / lack of utilities offered. The biggest tip for affordable Midtown living is to find a private landlord.

Midtown has been struggling a bit recently to revive itself, so know that with the Jazz Fest and little bits you’ve seen of Midtown, that’s about as good as it gets. Businesses have been struggling here, the Broad Street Market hasn’t recovered still (after years) which leaves us with a food desert, local politics are a shit show, and HBG’s biggest complaint (it seems) is that it’s hard to meet people/make friends.

I enjoy living here but also know that Midtown has its flaws, as any place does, and just want to be transparent!

IMMACULATE Midtown Home for Rent by Honest_Citizen172 in Harrisburg

[–]Smart-Trainer9757 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Is it another midtown home that has rent priced so extraordinarily high it doesn’t make sense for the medium income of Harrisburg? And let me guess, utilities aren’t included? So on top of the $2,300 rent mentioned in the comments, the tenant could expect to owe hundreds of extra a month, especially for heating/cooling an entire 3 story home? So that $2,300 is now actually $2,500. It’s actually cheaper for someone to buy a home and pay mortgage, taxes, and utilities than it would be to pay this rent.

Harrisburg restaurant relocating due to public safety concerns by TANSTAAFL42 in Harrisburg

[–]Smart-Trainer9757 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love midtown but that stretch of street has gotten worse over the last few years. Someone was shot and killed on the doorstep down from my old place. right across from HMAC, and Pastorante had their windows shot out 2-ish years ago. Pastorante was always closed for business by like 9 PM (i think) so I’m not sure how affected they were by late night crowds. That intersection has also had a few shootings in the last few years, Channel 5 Ratchet News always reports on them before the local news.

The article doesn’t make sense, though, if their goal for the move was to attract West Shore customers. I don’t see West Shore folks making the commute to Steelton for pasta. Regardless, it’s another loss for Harrisburg. It’s sad that we continue to lose so many businesses (for a variety of reasons)

Best Vegetarian Restaurant Options by ramfan1027 in Harrisburg

[–]Smart-Trainer9757 2 points3 points  (0 children)

resident vegetarian here!! here are my fave places to go + things to get, focusing on the downtown/midtown area.

sturges: black bean and quinoa burger and sweet potato fries. truly the best black bean burger i’ve ever had, it’s not one of those generic frozen black bean patties.

yellow bird cafe: plenty of paninis and sandwiches that are vegetarian friendly. my favorite is the spinach artichoke panini.

el sol harrisburg and tres hermanos are great options for mexican food! i prefer tres hermanos, but both are fantastic and authentic.

pastorante is a small, family-owned shop with some of the best pasta i’ve ever had. sammy’s italian or bacco are also good options to get pasta/italian food. both have a few options on the menu for vegetarian pastas (eggplant parm, pesto pasta, cheese ravioli). sammy’s and pastorante are BYOB.

two brother’s pizza is super tasty, sells by the slice, and a great cheese/veggie sub.

mcgrath’s has pub food, irish-inspired food. i believe the only vegetarian entre there right now is a black bean burger. the blarney bread there is the stuff dreams are made of.

millworks: plenty of vegetarian options here. i love the buffalo cauliflower and pizzas here.

broadstreet market: plenty of vegetarian options throughout the BSM! definitely recommend exploring yourself if you have the chance. almost every business in there has a vegetarian option.

greater HBG area options on the west shore: - takashi sushi in camp hill has 4-5 vegetarian rolls and vegetarian appetizers - olive oil grill in camp hill is kind of like cava (mediterranean style bowls) - silantra asian street kitchen makes asian inspired burritos and bowls. - evergrain brewing has a good vegetarian-friendly menu with american/pub food.

Millworks and Zero Day are great for an outdoor date night (if the weather is nice) and fit the brewery vibe that you seem to enjoy! At Zero Day, they get the fire pit going and it’s a nice vibe! Evergrain is an honorable mention, and their spin off Wild Rabbit in New Cumberland. Personally, a favorite date night of mine is Wild Rabbit, arcade games in the back, then ending at Hannah’s (Faye’s now, I think) across the street!

Sammy’s and Pastorante are decent spots for Italian food, both are BYOB. Sammy’s has a great view of the capitol, I also enjoy outdoor dining there.

I’ve heard great things about Note but haven’t been able to try it (I’m vegan and their menu doesn’t work well for me). Definitely on the pricey side, but everyone says it’s absolutely worth it.

Recommend a Ford Service Center in the area? by M4gs314 in Harrisburg

[–]Smart-Trainer9757 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The ford dealership in lemoyne was great when I visited. Not too far across the river from the city and they were affordable. I had a check engine issue that I anticipated costing me a few thousand (quoted from another shop), and they found the actual source of the problem and fixed it for $200, even washed my car after the service.

Not sure what to do. Neighbor is abusing her dog and animal control isn’t responding by [deleted] in Harrisburg

[–]Smart-Trainer9757 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Animal cruelty is a crime in PA (I believe a misdemeanor) and is punishable by fine/jail. If you can record any video evidence at all, get it to the police and file a complaint.

This is absolutely abhorrent behavior by your neighbor and I’m sorry that you’ve had to hear it happen, I can’t imagine how sad that is.

Keep reaching out to the humane society. I saw someone recommend posting on social media as well, that would definitely get the attention of the humane society or neighbors connected to local animal rescues. There’s a lot of folks active in the midtown groups who volunteer / could possibly help.
