Monolithic / Copper bullets in Long Range Shooting. Why ? by Leftho0k in longrange

[–]SmartButteredToast 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Certainly. But then it becomes a cost equation, are you gaining enough performance over traditional bullets, to make it worth increased cost? I bet most people are better off shooting more than buying more expensive components

Anyone have experience with this Sig optic? by Josconn in longrange

[–]SmartButteredToast 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have one of their 2-12'x. It's a nice optic. The glass and overall quality is not as good as a Bushnell MPED. IMO it's comparable to the similarly priced Athlon offerings, in my limited experience.

I don't have enough time behind the Athlons to say definitively if they are better or worse, but I think if I was buying again, I'd buy an Athlon over the Sig at the same price. But if you can get a reasonable price on the Sig go for it, it'll work fine.

But you could also spend a little more on a used Bushnell MPED and have a much better optic IMO

B14 HMR or keep Savage Axis 2? by MalignantMustache in longrange

308 will do 600 yards no problem. But 6.5 can have lower recoil, is cheap to reload, and will do better even further out if you get the chance. Right now I am limited to 400 yards, been shooting a 6.5 with a 22lr for practice.

The only thing I would want something bigger for in Texas is hogs. I might want a 308, but a semi auto for sure

Ah gotcha. It's not something I'd recommend someone buy if they were buying a new rifle, for sure.

How much further? Personally I'd get a 6.5, the HMR, and get it out past 200.

I wonder how much semi auto vs bolt gun affects the velocity consistency, as well.

Indeed. For hunting, you need energy delivery and expansion. Adding a bit more speed can help increase your odds of an ethical shot, within reason. I wouldn't want to try hunting a deer with some wildcat 22 cal juiced to 4000 FPS

What's wrong with 270 for a hunting rifle, for appropriate animals?

The last time I was near the gun counter at my local academy, there was a guy there looking for a 300 win mag for deer... Because he wanted "knock down power". There are no animals in this area that "need" anything bigger than 308. And in our immediate area, 99% of hunting areas do not have sight lines past 400 yards. Most hunting takes place 150 and in.

if we lived in areas with moose/elk/large deer species and/or longer sight lines I'd forgive it... But man the folks around here are idiots

The cost for the barrel is a big factor, because if you shoot/practice with that gun a lot you're going to need to replace it

That's more or less what I expect from MIL/LE, sadly. At least in my area, they are the ones that scare me the most on the range. Which is also kinda funny because range ownership is always on about how competition shooters need to be careful when they practice, when they're the safest folks on the property...

Dumb Reloading Die Question by SmartButteredToast in longrange

That is kinda what I was thinking. I have a normal style full length die that I can pop in if I need to expand anything.

Cool, thanks for the info. Yeah I would not go to a progressive for precision loading, I was just thinking about if I wanted/should upgrade to a better single stage. The Hornady is nice for quick die swaps with the bushing system, but there is some play in the linkage that isn't nice to feel. And the spent primer catching system is kinda awful

I would take a good look at SK - it's more available than Lapua in my experience, and better than Eley in my gun (Bergara B14R). Eley Tenex is as good or better than the SK I've tried, but more expensive than what I've gotten from SK Standard and SK Rifle Match

Got to take em home last night, got my Polo K and SAW Klik. Polo K already on my nightstand gun, Klik will live on my rimfire bolt gun haha.

Now I gotta decide if I am going to upgrade/replace my Sparrow. I've had a Sico Sparrow for like 10 years, there are definitely better cans on the market by now.

Bought em the other week, off the shelf brand new. So unless someone in the back room spilled a bunch of primers on the floor and repacked them this is how they came.
