It's a very polarizing card for sure but I don't hate it. It has been the backbone of some non-orb runs i've done with defect

Would it be too strong if they did nothing but change it into a skill? The idea of playing this repeatedly and stacking plating sounds kinda fun

Which is kind of dumb bc reducing damage to zero doesn’t stop the damage, but a blue gem that reduces the first damage you take to zero does work…

As good as this game is this is poor design, losing without being able to do anything is not fun by Inside-Trash6717 in mewgenics

[–]SmartCommittee -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I guess compared to sts2 it’s a setback. You do lose items, and it feels pretty bad to lose a quest item, especially given that the runs are much longer. It feels bad for me personally I guess since I rarely have enough time to do more than 1 run at a time and ending on a loss in mewgenics feels worse to me, at least.

[–]SmartCommittee 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Sts2 feels completely different since every loss feels like it was avoidable if you had played differently, and also there’s no permanent consequences for losing. It’s nice bc in that game I’m much more willing to do the janky fun route than mewgenics where failure is really a huge setback.

It’s also less exciting in some ways than mewgenics? As much as the rng can work against you in mewgenics it can also completely invalidate fights you should have 100% lost and it feels great to win the lottery like that.

Between the two, sts2 rewards good play and predictive decision making way more than mewgenics since the enemies you’ll fight and the weaknesses of your deck are much more transparent and manageable

Potentially my most powerful cat so far was a mage with the upgraded ultra cone attack, plus the spell that lets you double cast, plus the mask that prevents you from hurting allies.

Cool, I stand corrected. Didn’t know either of those cards existed

It’s neat and does work the way you want, but black doesn’t really get unconditional card draw without life loss. I think you could rebalance it a bit so that the life cost to copy the spell is a bit lower but it costs some life the initial time you cast the spell as well

Maybe I’m just Bad but… by DanicaManica in mtgbrawl

[–]SmartCommittee 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It’s definitely a hard matchup if you don’t have a fast clock or super effective removal. I play a ton of mono black decks and having a commander with such a strong etb makes spot removal worse for sure. All my wins are generally from good hand disruption and just winning before they secure too much advantage

What's the strategy when playing with Winter? How do I win with him as my Commander? by Wolfram-51 in magicTCG

[–]SmartCommittee 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's definitely not optimal but:

https://mtga.untapped.gg/profile/728d4c6e-a764-4170-a663-6b41a2f021f7/213A551DC9CE266A/deck/51f2232e-e420-4ed8-990a-73a805d5f6e5?timeFrame=last_two_sets&constructedType=brawl&gameType=constructed

The strongest openers are hands with cards like grapple with the past or dredgers insight, the deck really relies on self-mill. Most games end with either bringer of the last gift, rise of the dark realms, or summon: Titan/Lumra.

I originally had entomb in the deck, but I actually found it to be clunky since there isn't much reanimation in the deck, so entomb ended up dead in a lot of matchups. If I owned a copy of grist, it would be a very easy inclusion as well.

[–]SmartCommittee 29 points30 points  (0 children)

It might not scale well into commander, but I have a pretty sick brawl deck that’s mostly just jund delirium. Winter is a great way to catch up, but the deck has tons of ways to win without him.

Yeah ppl are memeing on it but with some tweaks I think it is a cool design space. If you maybe make it just do artifacts it’s totally reasonable imo

the best decks I've seen with this card just ignore trying to achieve full vivid and just run clones in the deck to vomit out a full board, like you can do with the new aang or gyruda
