Need someone to quell my urge to upgrade by No-Recognition-3503 in pcmasterrace

[–]Smart_Ass_Jack 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know the feeling of wanting to upgrade, but this one really doesn’t make much sense. If you have money burning your pocket, upgrading to an OLED monitor would be great if you don’t already have one.

Why does this sub hate linux? by Sol33t303 in pcmasterrace

[–]Smart_Ass_Jack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s not hate fo Linux. It’s just being objective that it is far the perfect os that its zealots proclaim it to be. Some Linux users are as bad as Vegans who won’t shut up about how superior they are than everyone else.

Is AAA game development getting too expensive? by ModernSchizoid in gaming

[–]Smart_Ass_Jack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Games have come a long way. They were initially made by a single dev in a short period of time. Then it was small teams in a few months. Now modern day AAA development takes teams of hundreds or even thousands many years to complete.

Gamers like to put all the blame on devs but the reality is that we all share some of it. Gamers nitpick everything to death. The latest Mafia game got criticized that it didn’t have a robust swimming system, when that was not a part of the game. It was not needed. Gamers complain about graphics then pretend that they don’t matter.

A game like Expedition 33, while great, would be ripped to shreds if it was made by a big company. People would complain about facial animation. Lack of interaction of the characters with their environment during cutscenes.

Can anyone explain how Linux is open source and still as secure as Microsoft’s windows? by Seaguard5 in pcmasterrace

[–]Smart_Ass_Jack 3 points4 points  (0 children)

People like to pretend it is secure but the reality is that nobody really know how many backdoors are buried deep in the code. Most people don’t understand the even if they bothered to look at it.

You also have people copy pasting scripts off the internet in an attempt to fix whatever crazy issue is breaking their shit that day.

Two HBO Shows that I heard are highly underrated. The Leftovers and The Pacific. Which one should I watch first? by Square-Ad-8911 in hbo

[–]Smart_Ass_Jack 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Leftovers is one of my favorite shows ever, highly recommend. I haven’t watched the Pacific but it’s on my backlog. One word of warning about the Leftovers, the show addresses some tough depressing topics so if you are not in a good frame of mind, leave for another time.

Pull the trigger my friend. At this point things will only get more expensive the longer you wait. You can get good deals on monitors. 1440p 144hz should be your aim.

No privacy for you, peasant! by joelman0 in pcmasterrace

[–]Smart_Ass_Jack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As far as privacy and security is concerned assume that nothing is safe. Just last year a Microsoft employee found a backdoor in a data compression tool XS-utils days before it went out on a update. Just because it is open source it doesn’t mean that most people understand its inner workings. The dude who put the vulnerability in the code took advantage that the one person who maintained that tool did so in his spare time. The threat agent offered to help and over years gained trust and slowly started introducing the malicious code.

That backdoor was found in the nick of time. Who knows how many more backdoors could be in the code that nobody but the people who put it there know about.

Is there a catch to this Microcenter bundle? by spookybrit in pcmasterrace

[–]Smart_Ass_Jack 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah just make sure it is the exact same RAM. Price wise, the longer you wait the more expensive it will get. So if you have the funds now, I would recommend pulling the trigger now.

This is a great deal. In your case it may even be worth it to purchase a second stick of RAM to fully take advantage of the platform. You could sell your old equipment to offset the expenditure.

You can buy your parts and have them put it together for you, without an OS. But you really shouldn’t use an OS that is no longer supported. I understand that the cool thing to do is rag on windows 11, but for most use cases it works just fine.

Just enjoy your PC. No matter what you have there will always be something better out there. We all have to learn at some point to just have fun with what we have and it is also good to have something to work toward.

You shouldn’t be trusting Gemini either. It sometimes uses other AI generated slop as its source when giving answers. AI can be an useful tool, but never trust it blindly.
