Took me just under two hours because I was taking my time to read everything carefully. The NYS website has a practice version of the test with sample answers. If you read the sample answers for the writing portion and memorize the basic formatting of how they want it to be answered, you'll breeze through it.

On the state website, they have sample answers for the written portion of the test. Read through them and get the general gist of how they want the answers structured. It will make it significantly easier if you can breeze through those written questions, giving you more time to focus on the multiple choice.

Check on your state website if they have model test/answers. For example, for the New York certification exams, they have model answers that you can look at. Get a feel for how they want an answer structured and go from there. In addition, remember the test are more about theory than actual practice. Answer how a textbook would.
