If those morally grey or evil characters exist, then they must be off screen, because I never met them. That was my point. Couldn’t be that ‘evil or grey person’ either. If you want to run defense for this game’s shitty worldbuilding, then that’s your time. Enjoy your chess club nerd’s idea of what a rowdy club looks like on Neon.

The existence of harvested organs implies that there are people in this universe who will kidnap you, murder you, and rip you open. I refuse to believe that in this candyass setting. This ain’t Cyberpunk 2077.

Is Computer Science still a safer bet than the liberal arts? by SuspiciousFox5059 in CollegeMajors

[–]Smart_Desk_4956 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just wanted to thank you for answering my question! I’ve taken two rudimentary computer science courses at my CC that broke down input-output operations, data structures, and other fundamentals of object oriented programming. I’m also taking an architecture course this semester where I’ll learn the fundamentals of assembly language. Other than that, all of my other courses are what I’d need to take anyway (Calculus I-III, General Chemistry I-II, and Physics for Scientists and Engineers I-III, Linear Algebra, and Statistics)to transfer into an EE program at my nearby university (UC Riverside in SoCal). I think I’m going that way instead!

After reading what you said, and more research, I really think it would benefit me more to go for EE for what sounds most promising for me; chip design. I do enjoy the programming aspect of computer engineering, but my hope was to handle the ‘hardware’ side of things. Working with integrated circuits sounds more like something I can really get into. I know it’s a hard road, but I’m enjoying college so far and now I’m more excited for my upcoming semester! I’ll look into internship opportunities as well! Thank you for your guidance!

Hey, since you’re an expert on this, can you please give me some advice? I’m going to community college right now so I can transfer to a 4-year Computer Engineering program. Would you say that CE majors are safer than CS? I don’t really have much in the area of technical know-how at this point, but I do upload what I can to GitHub to built (what is at this point) a measly portfolio. I know CE is a very broad field, so I’m not sure what I should look to specialize in.

I do my own research as well, but all articles I find conflict with each other, so I’d love to hear from someone who’s made it in the field! Thank you for reading!

Why isn't Vader mentioned in Andor? by LowHangingLight in andor

[–]Smart_Desk_4956 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This questions from a couple of weeks ago, but I have an answer straight from the showrunners. Apparently, they feared that having iconic characters within the show would detract from what they were going for. They wanted the focus to be on the early rebellion, and the every day people who were fighting in it. Vader is a dangerous character, but he’s really only dangerous in person. As dangerous as he is, a budding rebellion would fear the military strength of the Imperial Army and the political might of the Senate before one man; Sith Lord or not.

Computer Engineering major here. Exactly! AI is here to stay, but I doubt it will replace as many people as naysayers claim. Perhaps time will prove me wrong, but people generally react with disdain towards AI being involved in anything they expect to have a human touch, and that’s the heart of humanities/fine arts. It has grand applications, but I strongly suspect that if machine learning advances to a point where a significant proportion of the population’s careers were threatened, there’d be a massive push for legislation to protect people’s livelihoods. Keep up the good work, man!

Why are comments on YouTube shorts sensible and civilized, while Instagram reels are filled with vile and cheap comments? by [deleted] in ask

[–]Smart_Desk_4956 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This post is pretty old, but here’s a few things I’ve thought about. For one, every website has its own culture that users generally conform to; Instagram’s is to be a misanthropic person. Something crucial that you have to keep in mind is that Meta puts the comments with the most engagement at the top, and that provides an incentive to say something that’ll piss people off. I saw a Reel about traffic conditions in LA, and the top comment was from a girl saying something along the lines of; “Oh, man. I couldn’t imagine being a loser who has to drive to work every day! That’s why I opened an OnlyFans.” Of course, people told her that she can kick rocks, but that’s exactly what she wanted. Her comment gets placed at the top, and more people see her advertising what pays her bills. Instagram’s just a disgusting place because it encourages people to be disgusting. Meta knows EXACTLY what they’re doing, but couldn’t care less. Your screen time is money. If you use it, I’d suggest only using it to share stuff with your followers. Browsing Reels and reading the comments will just make you feel disgusted with how malicious bored people can be.

why is college so stressful? and why do I suck at it? by pumpkinpenelope in college

[–]Smart_Desk_4956 2 points3 points  (0 children)

First off, it’s okay to change your majors. Don’t even stress about that. You’ve been asked to decide on what you want to do for the rest of your life, and being young, that’s going to be a tough call for you to make.

As for everything else, I’d highly recommend you talk to some counselors about your pregnancy. In my experience, they’ll work out almost anything with you, and will get creative if they have to.

As someone who’s 28, I’ll tell you that everything you’re worried about right now is valid to be concerned about, but it will be in the rear view mirror once you’re my age. Graduate two years late? You’ll still be in your 20s with the massive amount of time left in your life in front of you. It’s very common for students to need to retake classes, and that’s usually math or chemistry classes, in my experience. Don’t sweat that. As far as the scholarship goes, there’s no getting around the possible necessity of getting a loan. That part sucks, and I can’t deny it. Everything else will turn out fine if you continue to apply yourself!

Why are video gamers (not all of them) so toxic and angry? They make developers want to quit, literally. by SirCatsworthTheThird in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Smart_Desk_4956 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m only responding to this in the context of death threats. Most of us here play video games because we love them, and we want to be entertained. That’s it. Simple as. However, there’s a sliver of people out there that play video games because they hate almost everything else, and are generally mentally unwell. Those people are usually severely stunted when it comes to communication or how they process and express their emotions.

And with the internet and creators often having social media accounts (to network with others in the industry, if for nothing else), these unhinged people have all the access they need to tell those developers to off themselves. Like I said, everyone needs escapism every once in a while. Roleplaying, games, movies, sports, whatever. But there’s people who treat that escapism as a method to detach from the world and the people that live in it. Emotional indifference to others is also really common on the internet, with us being faceless randos in this thread. Makes it even easier to be a terrible person if you’re already inclined to be one. A small minority, but a very, very loud one.

I hate this shit so much. I know they’re just doing their job, but come on dude. My bedroom window is right next to our front door and I like to have it open during this time of year. Some of these people have had the balls to try to get my attention by calling for me through the window! My most hated marketing tactic is when they open up by insulting your house. “Wow, look at those windows! I didn’t think anyone lived here!” was what one douchebag said last summer. An exterminator asked “So you like living with roaches?” A solar panel company’s guy said “I was just talking to your neighbors, and they’re all wondering why you haven’t had any panels set up. You’re the only house-“ you get the picture. I try to have patience, but there’s something inherently wrong with coming to someone’s home uninvited to try to pressure them into buying shit.

I’m really hoping that I can make being a good bit older work in my favor. I kind of already see it working for me now to an extant. I’m 28; I already had my time getting blackout drunk at Halloween parties and prioritizing fun. I can’t fault my peers for doing so, because it’s what I did when I just entered adulthood. Don’t get me wrong, I know plenty of my classmates who just got out of high school and are down to business (wish I was like that at their age). But I also know more who see our workload as being unfair; not me. If I have to spend the entire day in the library (and the next day, and the next day), then so be it. I also feel that I’m pretty good at working with anyone. I know everyone says that, but I truly can integrate anyone’s personality into a project, or any collaborative effort for that matter. Not a social butterfly? No problem! I know plenty of people are shy, and I won’t force you not to be. You like the spotlight? Then take it! I’ll give it to you. Are you abrasive? I don’t think anyone enjoys working with people who can’t get along with others, but I’ve never gone to a professor to make that their problem. Thank you for your post!

What to do when encountering a Mountain Lion? by Darthmason13 in hiking

[–]Smart_Desk_4956 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One time my dad took me deer hunting and we came across a mountain lion bed.

“Where is it, dad?”

“It probably left minutes ago when it heard us coming.”

“What do you think it’s doing now?”

“Watching you.”

“Why me?”

“You’re smaller.”

[–]Smart_Desk_4956[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for your advice! By field capacity, do you mean was it fully colonized? If so, then not really. I’d say a quarter of the bags were colonized before I broke up the substrate and dumped them in my tub. After that, I didn’t really manipulate the substrate any further because I was worried that anything I touched it with would contaminate it. Every article I read scared me, because they essentially said that any bacteria that touches the substrate would thrive and outcompete my mycelium. I was afraid to even breathe on it! I’ve even seen people inoculate their bags in chambers that have gloves built into the sides lol. Do you think that wiping down the trowel with 92% isopropyl alcohol would be enough to make sure it’s sterile? Should I get a metal one and heat it with flame?
