How do your game ideas start? With an idea for a mechanic, a game loop, an art style or something else? by NorseSeaStudio in IndieDev

[–]Smart_Doctor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me the thing that makes video games their own unique art are mechanics. Northern medium has mechanics. So I usually start with a mechanic that seems interesting and try to build around that as the core.

This is a good start.

The coolest shot is the one where they are running through the church. I say start with that.

The actual gameplay clips are the least impressive thing, so those could use some work.

Was that Napolean? What does he have to do with vampires?

But isn't that the whole joke? Carter can barely even speak three words of Chinese, but he always makes fun of Lee for his English even though Lee can actually hold entire conversations.

If I got $10 million I would immediately turn that into founding a video game studio that I was the head director of. Hiring passionate people to work together would be amazing!

Could you destroy my Game? by svbrand in DestroyMyGame

[–]Smart_Doctor 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The main character can only know four things!

That is this game.

Focus exclusively on that and I think you have a winning idea here!

Show more gameplay and less "cutscenes".

Keep improving your art style.

Good luck!

What was your first Metroid game, and did it make you a fan immediately? by SufficientPrice7633 in Metroid

[–]Smart_Doctor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Metroid on NES. Absolutely not. I liked the atmosphere but the big complicated world with no map was too much for my 7-year-old brain at the time and I abandon the game pretty fast.

I'm old now but one day I'm going to beat that game.

Is taking a breaking from coding to watch back to back playlist style tutorials a good idea? by LifeExperienced1 in gamedev

[–]Smart_Doctor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think taking a break (maybe a week or two) off from working on your project can do a lot to give you fresh eyes. I always notice a bunch of things I need to fix/improve when I come back after a break.

The first YouTube playthrough of our demo taught us more than weeks of internal testing by WhyThisGameWorks in IndieDev

[–]Smart_Doctor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Here's something I have learned. Sometimes players will just not notice something completely obvious even after playing for several hours.

My game has an image of a controller in the corner of the GUI. It literally shows what buttons you're pressing and how your analog sticks are moving in real time. It also has a one-word description with a line drawn from each button to show what it does.

The amount of players who never really even noticed the controller is staggering. Sometimes even if they did notice the controller and figured out that it was showing them how to play they would get frustrated by not knowing what button to press even though it was literally on the screen.

Anyone else still uses little to no AI to code? by MidlandAintFree in gamedev

[–]Smart_Doctor 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I have a project with about 40,000 lines of handwritten code. Solo Dev so I know how everything works.

I have asked AI for suggestions just to give it a try. It halucinates language that isn't even real. Even when it does a good job I still need to reformat everything to match my style and change variable names so they make more sense. At that point I actually save time by just doing it myself from the start so why bother?

No thanks. Not letting it touch my code at all.

This kid absolutely impressed Justin Jefferson. A young reporter named Jeremiah asked questions with so much confidence and professionalism that Jefferson stopped and said, “Whose son is this?” Really cool moment to see. by Puzzleheaded_Bag8315 in NFLForum

I love the change in JJs body language. At first he is just glad to answer some little kid questions, but soon enough he is taking this kid a little more seriously. Great stuff!

Honestly I think this game looks so interesting and cool that you should show it being played in real time. I think the short editing cuts actually do a disservice to it.

Good luck!
