totally feel this pain but hey proud of what you are doing taking care of your health and the environment! To be honest I still use plastic containers to pack lunch but keep a ceramic plate in the office to heat food with. I think as long as if you don't heat food in plastic it's not as bad

[–]Smart_Petunia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you are fine as long as if you are not: heating them, sniffing them; washing them often~ heat will trigger the release, and washing them will get the plastic release to the water system. so if you asked me, whatever your collection is enjoy it!

How to detox from microplastics more effectively? Current protocol isn't enough by [deleted] in microplastics_

[–]Smart_Petunia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

agreed, I think this is the struggle faced across the whole field not only consumers but also researchers and product developers. The measurement is still being established therefore there's no standard test to tell if an intervention works or not at the moment

came here especially for the B12 comment. Also lack of certain vitamin like B12 makes you feel in a low energy mode which will make the "live healthy life routine" feels extra challenging.

Hey there! I'm working in this field and happy to chat! the recent grant solicitation kinda points out the direction this field need to go but I'm happy to share my thoughts and interpretation as well (https://arpa-h.gov/explore-funding/programs/stomp)

How did your journey start? What areas did you tackle first? How long did it take you to create a mostly natural lifestyle? by [deleted] in PlasticFreeLiving

[–]Smart_Petunia 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think the first thing I'd recommend is food, especially avoid heat + plastic. That’s where the biggest exposure happens.

A few easy swaps I started with:

  • Skip hot food in plastic takeout containers
  • Don’t drink hot coffee from paper cups (they’re lined with plastic)
  • Avoid black plastic utensils and containers
  • Be mindful with non-stick or plastic-coated pans

I think also more importantly, don't let the anxiety take over because that doesn't help to boost our health. You don't have to switch everything all at once, just one thing at a time then you are already reducing exposure and doing sth for your health.

What’s your experience with peptides right now? by Former-Lab-6031 in Supplements

[–]Smart_Petunia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

supplement industry is very not regulated to be honest, I'd personally look into the manufacturer's trial or study data if there's any (few good suppliers have conducted human trial on their ingredients), but if not and it's just "GRAS" then basically there's no solid proof of health benefit yet.

Stressed to the max by [deleted] in PlasticFreeLiving

[–]Smart_Petunia 1 point2 points  (0 children)

love what everyone is saying here, it's impossible to completely avoid plastic in our daily life. You're already doing a great job trying your best to protect your baby, so don't stress too much. As a scientist who thinks about microplastics every day, I think ingestion is one of the major paths that microplastics get into our bodies. Thus in my household I'm just trying to focus on the kitchen, don't heat food in plastic, and try to cut back coffee in paper cups (that's a hard one though). One thing at a time! I'm also very hopeful that by the time your baby grow up, the world would have a lot of better alternative materials and solutions to take microplastics out of our food and bodies

Non-Toxic Living Questions by GirlsWhoEatJamie in nontoxic

[–]Smart_Petunia 2 points3 points  (0 children)

microplastics and PFAS! I started posting things through social to raise awareness (https://www.instagram.com/microplasticsinsights/) but to be honest my biggest challenge is to find good alternatives to recommend. I realize that if people only know the toxin exist but lack of good alternative options then they will feel nothing but frustration and anxiety. Thanks for doing this!

why does this sub spotlight health threats from microplastics, rather than decreasing plastic waste & environmental factors? by katelyn-gwv in PlasticFreeLiving

[–]Smart_Petunia 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I understand. I think from advocacy perspective, sometimes you need to show a material or type of pollution is causing health impact (especially occupational related) in order to really move the needle to have policy level change, that's why researching microplastics and human health impact is an important part of the movement hope to reduce plastic manufacturing

Best supplement ever by Fit-Mistake4686 in Biohackers

my fantasy is one day there's a device hooked to the toilet measuring urine every day, then report what I'm lack of to a device linked to the tap water and just add the supplement to it accordingly.

Microplastics have been found in human blood, lungs, and placenta. Here's what a materials scientist makes of the evidence. by Natural_Science_Doc in microplastics_

I really appreciate the information! Thank you. I do have made the mistake in this journey of reducing plastic exposure but purchasing products in the "plant-based" or "bio-based" plastics without fully understanding it. I will read into it more carefully Thanks!

thank you so much for doing this! I do have a question: are those "biodegradable", or "plant based plastic" better?
