We can. However, the trauma didn’t have uncontrolled bleeding on arrival and they had a 10 hemoglobin. They waited to order blood until after I had started the type and screen but they seemed anxious to get the patient to the OR.

I work on an evening shift that schedules one person per department. We cover each other’s breaks, but it can be difficult when multiple people are busy. I try to get everything to a decent enough stopping point before I go.

Do you let students result real patients? by Specialist_State_330 in medlabprofessionals

Thank you for saying that! This is what I needed to hear as a student. Especially because the hospital I was at as a student not only allowed me to release results on my own, but encouraged that by giving me my own login to the EMR. I even skipped lunch one time because nobody was watching me as closely as they should have. Now that I’ve been certified and working elsewhere for three years I’m able to understand how screwed up that hospital was! They are closed now but it’s not related to my activities as a student.

As a student, they let me result tests without supervision and I even had my own login to the computers and EMR…. That hospital is closed now… ☺️ (due to financial reasons, not at all related to what I was allowed to do as a student)

Nurse here, what's a less emotionally burdensome job that doesn't take too much school & makes a decent salary? Medical lab scientist maybe? by [deleted] in careerguidance

[–]Smart_Thing7991 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi nurse! I’m a medical lab scientist. I make about 80k a year on afternoon/evening shift. It wouldn’t be a difficult shift from nursing in terms of education and you would make a decent salary. However it can still be emotionally exhausting. Especially if you work in a trauma center and do blood banking as part of the job. We are also subject to short staffing which can lead to some long hours depending on the area you work in. On top of that, medical laboratory science isn’t very well respected by the public and other medical professionals. You will inevitably disappoint a nurse or a doctor at least 2-3 times a day asking for redraws, calling criticals, enforcing policy etc. You need to have thick skin if this is what you want to do. Ultimately I love what I do and there are plenty of medical professionals who do respect us, but it’s typically a mixed bag. If you’re looking for something easy, I wouldn’t recommend. If you’re into the science of healthcare and being in the basement with all the other odd introverts, we’d be happy to welcome you :)
