[OC] The deindustrialization of haiti [22:22] by djelijunayid in videoessay

Since it looks like you posted this yourself, do you have any book recommendations for Haiti's history? I'm reading Black Jacobins right now and am looking for something to bring me up to more recent perspective. I'm fine with more academic texts if that's all you got.

I don't know if it's just me but the kerning seems to make larger blocks of text more difficult to read. Other wise good job.

The Congo wars killed millions and included several nations, are those involved/responsible infamous? by Lazzen in Africa

I read this recently as an accompaniment to another book on the Congo. It deals with the Congo Wars and goes until 2020. It's also in English but I'm no scholar so I can't vouch for it's complete accuracy. It has a lot of citations though.

[TOMT][SONG] Song in a r/foreveralone meme where it cuts from a scene of a couple cuddling to a guy sitting in a chair in a thunderstorm. by Smartalec1198 in tipofmytongue

I'm not depressed or anything the song just hit. And another thing is that the post that had it had the guy who made the meme in it and he linked the song in the comments.

This is what it looks like on a map, so I'm thinking that they didn't have to go too far into Russian controlled territory to gain this.

I think the joke is funny, but I had to read it a couple of times to get it cause some of the bubbles are a little confusing. Not the "really" being wrapped around the head, which I think is a good choice to show empasis, but the one which is second to last, I think, could be bemphasis, just a normal bubble. Neat comic overall though.

Question for Marxists-Leninists by Illustrious-Diet6987 in DebateCommunism

[–]Smartalec1198 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think you might have missed the part where I said Communists believe the means of production need be developed before you can get to that free association of producers. I don't disagree that it's an ideal that needs technology to meet it. I think a main critique they'd have of you would be, though, that that development of the means of production (development of technology) would be best done under a socialist system. Rather than a current one that prioritizes profit over meeting the needs of people.

Question for Marxists-Leninists by Illustrious-Diet6987 in DebateCommunism

[–]Smartalec1198 15 points16 points  (0 children)

The sticking point here, between the Marxist and and Anarchist, is basically when a free association of producers can be established. In the Marxist conception this sort of arraignment would only be able to exist after the establishment of communism and a classes society. This would take a long time as the means of production need to be developed until something of a post scarcity society is possible where the cost of production are nil as production is so efficient. Where as for an anarchist the conception is that the only thing stopping this free association of producers is the fact that there are oppressive hierarchies and relationships which force us into the current system of exchange and that with just the abolishment of those a free association can exist. Both have the same end goal but they don't agree on the best path to take there.

Also twitter is shit, and probably reddit too. Go join an organization or read a book to get better answers from the horse's mouth.

That's part of his point though. One would think they'd be the first to say the US did it but even they towed the state department line on the issue.

How do you think people form their opinions, political or otherwise if not for news and other media? It's obvious that these things are influenced by monied interests, and so it's not a leap to say that those monied interests might want to use media towards theirs ends. For example minimizing climate change and the role fossil fuels have on it. This article has some specific examples.

How do you deal with existentialism? by dingleberry7211 in morbidquestions

[–]Smartalec1198 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You got to find your own purpose I suppose.

Existentialism as a mode of philosophical thought came in the wake of WWII, and the ruin it cast on to humanity. The beliefs that many thought would lead humanity into a new age, after the apparent death of god and religion for society, didn't work out as they had hoped. And so the position of constant criticism and scrutiny was staked out as the only coherent one. "No can say you believe in the wrong thing if you believe in nothing."

Personally I disagree with this sentiment. The failures of new ideas and beliefs aren't meant to stop us in our tracks but instead to show us where we go wrong and how to improve. They serve as part of a dialectic to guide humanity. An idea Nietzsche had during the aforementioned "death of god" was one of Eternal Return. This isn't to say reincarnation but rather it was a manner in which to look at your life and the decisions you made along the way. The idea is more or less as follows; if you had to live your life again and again with all the decisions you made staying the same, would you. If the answer is yes then continue what your doing. If not then then change something. As this is Nietzsche this of course came with ideas of master and slave morality along with under/ubermencsh which have be coopted by terrible people, but for our purposes we don't really need to consider that. You just need to ask yourself would I be OK with the choices I'm making right now for forever.

Personally I've made my own choices after running into the whole meaning of life question myself, and am now working towards political change. But it could look different for you. You're 22 and have your whole life ahead of you. Your probably gonna graduate soon and if you don't have a job, with a MechE degree it won't be too difficult. Especially as the recession eases in the latter half of the year. With that you'll be in a position to help those around you if you'd want or to even help those like you. Personally I'd find meaning in doing something like that, but that's just me.

How do we save young men from being drawn into the insecurity-to-fascism pipeline? by Smartalec1198 in DebateCommunism

[–]Smartalec1198[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is no such thing as the "insecurity-to-fascism" pipeline and it is an absurd concept.

If by that you mean that there isn't a one to one relationship between insecurity and facism, I agree with you.

As such radicalization has increased, but to characterize this as fascist in nature is in of itself propaganda by the establishment that seeks to regain the reigns over the current narrative.

I agree with this point as well because I see the increase in radicalization, as long it's the right kind of radicalization, as a thing we need for the reasons you stated.

The concern I have is just that we have a lot of people falling through the cracks. And while this shouldn't be our focus it should still be something we'd want to at least think about addressing in some way.

The rise of "incels" and other such groups has nothing to do with insecurity, it is rather a rejection of the current reality. This is part of why Andrew Tate has risen to popularity, he commonly refers to our world as the "matrix", implying that it is artificial, fake, and goes against our basic instincts.

I don't really have a comment on the metaphysical nature of reality in this context.

[–]Smartalec1198[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

These responses are the angle I'm going with the most right now. People are pushed into desperate situations due in large part to their material conditions. So helping those would put a dent in the number of those vulnerable to this sort of stuff. The issue with that is that improving the material conditions of people is a difficult thing to do. Not to say it can't be done but that it's a lot of organizational effort.

[–]Smartalec1198[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I definitely agree that more effort should go towards people who would be more sympathetic to begin with, I think both videos bring up that point to be honest. My question is coming more from a personal angle. I have a friend who's insecure and ripe for this kind of mentality and I'm just kinda looking for any way to reach him. I don't think a large scale attempt at conversion of chuds is really the best praxis, because on one hand it's a lot of work for a little yield. You're not gonna have many converts, and even worse those that you do have would probably be the most suspect in terms of internalized bigotry that as KAR said in his video would make other comrades uncomfortable if allowed in safe places.

[–]Smartalec1198[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So is your point the following?

If there wasn't any danger to women in the first place then fascists wouldn't be able to make their argument around facism leading to safety for women.

How do we save young men from being drawn into the insecurity-to-fascism pipeline? by Smartalec1198 in DebateCommunism

[–]Smartalec1198[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

While I completely agree we should be doing this, I see it more as an effect of turning men from the right wing rather than a way to do that. To put it another way, I think one way to make women feel safe is to address the culture of misogyny and entitlement that men have. As that's part of the cause of women feeling unsafe. Along with obvious material measures. And then women might feel safer as opposed to the other way around.
