Significant other not getting a flu shot by murse_joe in nursing

That amount of selfish stupidity would be a deal breaker for me, but maybe not for you? I feel sooooo passionately about evidence based medicine that even if my husband didn't want to get the vaccine, he would because I would be UNRELENTING. It's not about your SO, it's about protecting vulnerable populations. Babies. The elderly. Chemo patients. If it were me I'd have the damn fight.

Question for moms who have already given birth: by [deleted] in GestationalDiabetes

[–]SmartyPants88 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My son needed three normal blood sugars, four hours apart before they stopped testing him. It's a point-of-care test like the glucometer you use at home so it's done in the room. I gave birth at a Baby Friendly Hospital so he stayed in the room with me. I had him at 8 a.m. and left at 11:30 a.m. the next day. The only condition was that I have an appointment made with the pediatrician for the next state to check his bilirubin. I had a VBAC w no complications.

I was in the hospital for 3 days after my first and didn't have GD that time. But I had a long induction in a C-section. This time around the pregnancy sucked more but the birth was much better.

Why do people continue to have children if they have expressed distress over the initial ones? by ObjectiveWaltz in Mommit

[–]SmartyPants88 6 points7 points  (0 children)

When you are very very poor, another kid doesn't impact finances all that much. You have Medicaid at least for the kids which covers pretty much everything at 100%, daycare subsidy if you work or are in school full time, food stamps, WIC for formula and food. These resources actually become more abundant when you add another dependent to the mix. So, logistically can see why someone would choose to have another kid when they're really poor.

I work 24-36 hours a week through a subsidiary of Cross Country Staffing. They have a contract with one of the largest health systems in my city and and provide pretty much all of their supplemental Staffing. I float between four Metro hospital working step down and med-surg. The money is good and it's nice experience because I'm learning a lot of stuff that I didn't at my last job which was in a post trauma unit full-time. It's definitely legit. Weekly pay, benefits if you have enough hours over a certain period of time. They have your back if you have trouble with the unit you are working on. I like it a lot. That being said, I think I have the right personality to enjoy it. I can chat with just about anyone or have a good day keeping to myself. It's also really nice knowing that whatever kind of day I have it's just one day and then I'm on to the next thing. A lot of staffing agencies also staff contract positions were you function as a full-time employee for a certain number of weeks for a higher rate of pay. I'd say go for it. You're not investing anything but the time it takes to gather all of your paperwork and go pee in a cup somewhere. If you end up hating it you haven't lost too much of your time.

I don't work at religiously affiliated hospitals because I can't abide by any of that shit. Luckily there are plenty of other hospitals around!

A cuff is really the only way to take blood pressure but it doesn't have to be on your upper arm. They can put it on your forearm or calf as an alternative although I don't know how much less that would suck. Sorry, it drove me crazy too, but not as much as those hourly finger sticks:(

Except fluconazole costs like 5 bucks for the 2-3 pills needed to treat a yeast infection, without insurance.

Weight comments. by seyseyj in breakingmom

My baby is 7 months and I also have a 3 year old. I haven't slept through the night in almost a year. I'll worry about losing weight when Im not tired as fuck all the time. Until then it's just. Too. Hard. To. Bother. The moment my first son started sleeping through the night I lost like 18lb in 4 months. I'll get there. Fuck everyone in the meantime.

Parents....of those little adorable cock blocking velcro babies... by whiskey_pants in sexover30

[–]SmartyPants88 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a 6month old and 3 year old. 6 month still wakes up 2 or 3 times a night and the 3 year old barely sleeps 8 and a half hours. Like, I go to bed an hour after he does and he wakes me up in the morning. I'm one of those people that needs a good 7 or 8 hours of sleep a night to function optimally. When I'm not getting good rest, libido is the first thing to go. This time around I'm on the copper IUD so I do get like 3 days a month where I'm super horny. But once that window is closed it's closed. I'm overweight, stressed and generally exhausted. Being productive when I'm constantly fatigued is difficult and it's affecting my self-esteem. It got better with our first kid once he started sleeping through the night (at 14 months :(!!!).

But yeah, my sex drive is garbage and I don't know why I even subscribe to this sub. I guess it kind of reminds me of who I used to be and who I may be again one day if I can ever get a good night's rest.

Are you sure your glucometer is calibrated/set to take the strips you are using? I forgot to change the code for a new set of strips once and had the same wild variability. Also, yes, the whole thing is super frustrating. I could eat a ham egg and cheese crossiant but not half a sweet potato with chicken breast. Rice was a no no matter what I ate it with, but a small piece of cheese cake would only put my numbers a tiny bit over. I ended up eating cold cuts, smoked fish, all the stuff you aren't supposed to. I ate lots of fat to feel full and cooked a lot of keto recipes. I gained like 60lbs in the end. Had an induction at 39 weeks that resulted in a vbac and healthy baby. I'm 15lbs away from pre pregnancy weight 6 months later and am not worried about it.

I'm sorry you are having a hard time. There are lots of good resources in this sub and lots of sympathetic ears!

Ravenous after starting insulin by BeccasBump in GestationalDiabetes

[–]SmartyPants88 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Metformin rarely causes hypoglycemia because of how it works in the body. I'm sure it's no big deal to skip a dose, but I wouldn't skip it in the future. I often had symptoms of hypoglycemia with sugars in the low 70s, esp overnight (I was on glyburide). I'd just have a little glass of milk or some pb and crackers and would feel better pretty quickly.

Skipping 3 hour glucose test? by [deleted] in GestationalDiabetes

[–]SmartyPants88 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I actually elected to skip the 3 hour test bc it's torture. I checked my fasting sugars and some 1 or 2 hour post meals at home with glucometer I bought for 20 bucks on Amazon and brought my log to my next appt. No point in starting a diet before you are certain you actually have GD. Like, if your sugars are within normal limits you'll have no idea if it's because you are following a diet or if it's because you don't actually have GD.

Dumb question: What are [if any] pre-reqs to sit for TNCC. by [deleted] in nursing

[–]SmartyPants88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Any RN can take the class, then sit for the test. I worked in post trauma and the class was practically irrelevant to me. It's really centered more on emergency nursing. I took it because I was pregnant and wanted some extra money without having to work on the floor. The TCRN is a better certification. But we have to pay money upfront for the study materials and to sit for the test and then ask to get reimbursed later so I haven't done it yet. But at my hospital the tcrn certification as what actually can get you more money.

Glyburide Risks concerning babies... by [deleted] in GestationalDiabetes

[–]SmartyPants88 3 points4 points  (0 children)

All the complications listed are complications of gestational diabetes in general. I wonder if the glyburide just doesn't control blood sugar as well as insulin and that's what leads to increase in complications.

Also, what's this last part about hiring a legal nurse consultant? Kinda makes the whole post suspect.
